When can we expect a payoff?
Oh, and I forgot to mention that part of my reason for not seeing what happened this patch as payoff, is because nothing of consequence happened. Everyone we new is still alive, LA is going to be rebuilt, and the world has lost nothing but a really 2 dimensional villain.
Did you not notice that we will have to deal with a new Elder Dragon soon?
Just like how we deal with Krakatrorik, and Jormag!
What kind of “payoff” do you want?
Not being a troll, just curious. You say that there’s no payoff, but you don’t expand on that by telling us what you want. I am just curious.
What kind of “payoff” do you mean? Its hard to be disappointed by the dragon when we haven’t even seen it yet. We could be getting a new zone that’s filled with level 80 mobs, lots of events, and a dragon that appears every hour….okay I’m getting my hopes up but really, we have no idea whats in store for the next update yet.

We have 4 others man, and they’ve been pretty quiet. And the last one also was not too cool in the end. Past experiences kill my hype over a new dragon.

The other four are however not a direct threat to the major races.
While the new one most likely is, due to the closeness to several capitals (and the fact that it is kittened and powered-up.)

Ashabhi and Blackarps, I’ll respond to you both at the same time.
When I say payoff, I mean I want something of consequence and something that feels like an ending to an arc. As of this moment the villain died unceremoniously, showing herself to be far less interesting than she could have been, and just left us with something “bigger” on the horizon.
The ending of the personal story was a letdown for most people, but it still had a payoff. The Payoff is that Destiny’s Edge was reunited, the races and pacts were united as one, marched up to Zhitan’s door and knocked hard. We boarded a giant Mega Death Ship and blasted Zhitan away. It was not well implemented, but it was conclusive.
The Living story Season 1 does not feel like a season 1 finale to me because it end on giving us something else to deal with, while having nothing else of consequence occur. All key character still live except for Scarlet, LA is being retaken, and nothing has changed beyond just one more dragon to deal with.
We are still waiting the cleanse of Orr, what was expected in this LS 1? If the PS is completely useless on the world…
The LS is like a tv series… the seasons end with a cliffhanger.
So i don’t think there will be any payoff or something like that.
We just need to wait the next big patch in April or May.

I gotcha. Yeah the story part of Scarlet was never really there to begin with. They tried really hard here in 2014 to put a bunch of puzzle pieces together and show why they did a lot of things in 2013 but the finale was pretty lackluster. The fight is fun but I definitely expected more. I expect Mordremoth to be a pretty huge deal. I'm expecting a new map, unique rewards, and new combat mechanics. I'm hoping for much more but we won't know for another week and a half.
I guess an awakened dragon, which is now the biggest threat in Tyria, isn’t enough of a payoff?
Really, what do you want? Because I think your expectations are widely unrealistic.
I more or less agree with the op.
ArenaNet basically took an entire year of an incredibly slow and dragged out story to say, “hey, guys, by the way, there’s another dragon.”
GASP NO.
Thousands of people saw this coming, and frankly, there wasn’t much of a payoff for me either upon finishing the Scarlet fight. The ending cutscene was cool, but…wow, that was a long year without much permanent content just to say there’s another dragon.
What would I want as a payoff?
Finish the fight with Scarlet > Dragon awakens violently > Dragon decides to do something similar to Kralkatorrik’s flight >>> Potential for awesome things
But, nope. We got a cutscene. Don’t just show the dragon that people have known about for quite some time. Make it do something right then. Make the consequences of allowing Scarlet’s drill to keep drilling apparent in the moment. Go out with a REAL cliffhanger. Remember the end of the second Hobbit film? Smaug flying toward Laketown?

I haven’t played it thru yet, so I dunno exactly what’s been revealed, but does anything leading up to the awakening of Mordremoth confirm/strongly hint that the sylvari and Pale Tree were originally supposed to be dragon minions? That was the impression I got as they led up to this patch. If this is correct, I may have to level my Sylvari alt a bit, cus that could be a very interesting story for them to experience next season.

To be fair, epilogue hasn’t happened yet. Maybe Mordremoth “brands” Lion’s Arch then? And we end up with a jungle map there. And that just stays that way till Season 2 starts?

I hope the new Dragon actually involves itself with the world more than the other 4, but I’m not expecting it all that much. I honestly expect there to be a somewhat slow chain of events until this dragon even reaches full swing, which would be pretty lame.
I know it might sound kinda silly and childish, but I want cool things now please.

Here’s what I was hoping to happen during this patch:
Scarlett reveals that she has been affected by Dragon corruption, but instead of following its orders and attempting to awaken the dragon, she rebelled against it and has been working this entire time to try and kill the elder Dragon to silence the voices in her head.
Scarlet also reveals that the Elder Dragon she wants to kill is under Lion’s Arch. In her attempt to reach the dragon and kill it with her weaponry, armies, and toxin, she awakens the dragon in full force. Scarlet’s forces are then decimated by the Elder Dragon as it is far more powerful than anticipated, and Scarlet herself is devoured, having unwittingly become a sacrifice to Mordremoth’s power and supplying him with a whole army to corrupt into his own.
Then we have Mordremoth making LA his ground zero and spreading his corruption from the very center of the Tyria we players have been playing in this whole time.
To me, that would have been an excellent payoff to be given a really climactic moment in which we would lose Lion’s Arch entirety and shake the world as we know it. This reveal would also show Scarlet to be a parallel to the force of the players and the pact, as they shared a common goal. This would also serve to show the caliber of threat we would be dealing with immediately rather than hinting at what might be coming. This would have been a crescendo leading to the next season of the living story, but what we have feels more like the music is still rising.
what we have feels more like the music is still rising.
Which is NOT what we need after a year of waiting for the climax.

The reason Asurans and Skritt are now living above the surface of Tyria is due to Primordus being (wait for it) a direct threat to both races (Asurans being a major race.) Also note Primordus has minions throughout majority of the Tyrian continent.
The reasons Norn have migrated to the Southern Shiverpeaks and founded Hoelbrak, and also the reason other races have come in contact with the Kodan is due to (wait for it) Jormag directly putting pressure on these races, and is even turning every day norn males into Svanir, which even live inside of Hoelbrak.
Oh and on top of all this? The Charr were pursuing Ebonhawke on the daily before (wait for IT) Kralkatorrik came through and decimated most of the region near Ascalon. They are now fighting Branded on the daily due to this. If you read the "Edge of Destiny"book you will also note an attack on Ebonhawke by the Branded that was almost lost, but was saved on the brink of destruction.
Also note that Quaggan, Krait, Largos, and even the Karka have become a present force due to an underwater Dragon putting pressure on their underwater homes.
So give me a break dude. This was pure publicity to create hype and stir up players due to the release of a “New Dragon” which was already fairly confirmed to begin with.
Just because the other dragons were not a “direct threat” to Lions Arch, they still all have been prevelant in Tyria, just not as much as Zhaitan.
I’m happy about Mordremoth being awakened, but for the past year we built up something that could had been released in half the time.
A new dragon means nothing honestly.
Remember the zhaitan fight? yeah.

I should have been clearer.
They are not a direct threat to the major races RIGHT NOW. (Which I am also quite sure that I have stated multiple times in this very thread).
Where is the current ongoing attacks on the Human, Charr, Sylvari, Asura and Norn capitals from Jormag, Kralkatorrik, Primordus and Bubbles?
You are also confusing waking up as actual planned attacks, which is not really the case.
Zhaitan didn’t really attack Lion’s Arch when it woke up and by doing that sent a massive tidal wave that wiped out LA. Same as Kralkatorrik not attacking the Charr when it flew over Ascalon and branded it.
It was responsible for it, but it didn’t do it on purpose, and its forces aren’t really actively trying to push into the Black Citadel.
I have never claimed that they were not prevelant, I have claimed that they are not direct threats, and as such suddenly attacking them would seem quite silly from a story point of view. But by instead awakening a Dragon in the backyard of several races (which WILL make it an immediate threat) it does makes much more sense for a continuation of the main story.

A dragon is hardly a pay off in this game. The dragons in this game are comparable to the ones in Game of Thrones. It’s like, they’re coming!! When?! Sometime! When sometime?! Definitely maybe in the future!
I am still holding a small glimmer of hope that the Dragon (assumed to be Mordremoth) isn’t the only thing Scarlet woke up down there…as in maybe Mordy is a side effect…
but yeah, now that I know what you mean by “payoff,” I understand. I was truly hoping Scarlet would have been more challenging in the final scene, instead of being half dead already.
I would like to bring up one thing that could make this reveal more satisfying. If we look at the events prior to the game, dragons waking up actually have all had huge effects on the world.
Zhitan’s awakening raised Orr to the surface, Primordus scattered the underground races, Kralkatorrik made the Crystal Scar, Jormag made the Norn flee their homeland and killed about 4 spirits of the wild, and the deep Sea Dragon made the Krait and Quaggan flee their home.
I’m really hoping Mordremoth’s awakening causes a massive cataclysmic event, but I still don’t feel that what we got was any form of payoff to a year’s worth of story and buildup.

Why are people so excited about an Elder Dragon??? Do you all remember how absolutely boring Zhaitan’s story and fight was? It was terribly written and I don’t see how just because there was a cutscene that revealed a new Elder Dragon that that’s magically going to transform the story of this Living World into amazing story. Fact is, the Personal Story was mediocre, as was Season 1 of the Living World, we could’ve had an amazing ending but we didn’t, we got more mediocrity.
What in the world makes any of you think that Season 2 of the Living World is going to be any better than what has already been released by ANet story wise.
Mordy is going to be another bland Dragon with bland minions and we will get all sorts of questions raised about Mordy but will likely never get any answers as we didn’t get any answers about Scarlet.

I do see what the OP is saying, and I do think that the LS could have been so much more, but at the same time, I do like the Biconics, and so I’m satisfied with the LS for the simple reason that I now count Rox, Braham, Kasmeer, Marjory and Taimi among my character’s friends. I feel more connected to them than I ever was to Destiny’s Edge or even your Order mentors.

I find it very difficult to get invested with the characters of the Living Story due to issues with its pacing. I cannot see a character as my player’s friend when interactions with them occur in small windows with, at the shortest, two weeks separating the last time I saw them.
I found it much easier to be invested in the mentors of the orders because my interactions with them were more frequent and fresh in my memory. It is also due to there being actual dialogue between the Player Character and the mentor. The Living Story lacks the Personal Story’s dialogue cutscenes, making interactions with the other characters feel more like the player is just being talked at. The nature of the Living story also makes the Player Character a much more apparent blank variable in the Living Story, rather than an actual character.
I would say the only character involved in the living story that I care about more than slightly is Evon Gnashblade, and that’s only because of the short story Anet put on the site that portrayed how he started the Black Lion Trading Company. I also read the stories about Rox and Braham, but I didn’t care for those as much.
The payoff was Lion’s arch being blown up and the lesbian kiss: when you can’t write a good story, go the Hollywood blockbuster route.

i kinda liked the PS, then at least you could choose how to handle certain points, the LS felt as though we were placed on rails the entire time, even down to the elections (think about it, isnt it convenient that kiel’s fractal just so happened to tie in with the main story?)
like i said, i preferred the ps, however, who knew elder dragons were afraid of fireworks right? (basically please make a different final fight)
Kiel Replacement Movement
pay-off would be if the crosssection of leylines that scarlet drilled into would also cut of the flow of magic going to the central transferchamber, thus shutting down asura gates and make primordus pop up his head from under LA.
The only reason I hold out for hope is that we have yet to see Mordy’s “big push”. All the Elder Dragon’s have done something during their awakening that drastically changed the area they lived in. One could argue that Scarlet was the device by which changes were made, but I think Mordy still has to establish an “Orr” of his own.
I don’t know about any of you guys, but I feel like the living story has felt like a year of build up to something cooler happening later, and I’m a little tired of waiting.
I’m tired of waiting as well. My confidence in the Anet writing team has hit an all time low. Its all low fantasy stuff in a high fantasy setting which will always make a lackluster story in a game. I laugh when they compare their story to game of thrones, as if!
I have never played an MMO where the players have been so vocal in their dislike of the story or the characters.
I think they really need to take a fresh approach to the next chapter (possibly some new writers). If they pace it like before and continue to have this terrible cast of characters then I doubt we’ll ever see a payoff.

There is no payoff with the Living Story. It’s ALWAYS going to be more of the same. Think of the Living Story like a crappy anime that never goes anywhere, even when it’s going somewhere. It goes on and on and on, with more filler than actual content. And finally, after a great length of time spent doing nothing, the climax arrives just in time to wash, rinse, and repeat. Ain’t it grand?

I really don’t like recommendations like this, not because people don’t deserve it, but because it probably wouldn’t make a huge difference in how things shake out.
It’s like having an editor for a writer, with the option to ignore their advice. Plenty of bad things can happen even with an editor looking over a story draft and going “yeah I dunno about this part right here…”. Or even worse “I don’t want to be the one to tell the four-time-running #1 bestseller author their story needs work, they obviously know what they’re doing”.
What I’d like more than people being shoved into (or attached) to the writing team is them taking extra time to sit down and look at their work and review it with an outside group who have no stake in things.
If nothing else. I want them to take an extra week before release and go check story for continuity of lore, consistency of tone, and player agency before going forward. And heck, while doing that the testers can make an extra pass at the patch for potential bugs/errors/oversights. Players will wait an extra week on a release schedule if the final product is better polished in both function and story.

The funny thing is, they did get that but it’s a smaller group who does it. Like the discussions about the books before the HBO series started.
I mean, that community was smaller and yet as intently focused as the lore discussions on things such as the “true nature” of the sylvari. It produced the following:(Don’t click this unless you read the books.)
“R + L = J”?
Which is as viable a potential truth as “sylvari are originally dragon minions”. There’s potential evidence all around but there’s not enough to be definite.

I’m comparing my simple game to a legendary movie.

. . . well, more like comparing it to a substandard platformer on the NES which was really evil about how it worked.
Also what you would hypothetically say doesn’t make any sense unless that game was named “Star Wars”.
. . . gods and demons I hate analogies. Always full of holes and any time you try to plug them you just get more (and worse). Kind of like trying to plug plot holes in your story hurriedly instead of going “ignore that” then making them inconsequential later.

No it doesn’t. Why should the name make any difference? Its the fact that I am comparing my old arcade space invader game to Star Wars. Just how they compared GW2 to the Game of Thrones. The name of the game is not important, saying its up to the science fiction standards of Star Wars is the issue, or in the articles case, saying that “I nailed Games of Thrones” is the same as “I nailed GW2”.
That’s how comparisons work, its not an issue about the names being the same.
