Why are Current Events character-bound?
Broken Caladbolg was never soulbound but account-bound. You must have equipped it at some point for it to become soulbound, as you stated correctly.
Apart from that, I agree on certain soulbound decisions that don’t make any sense to me, either. Caladbolg, however, is not one of them.
I was wondering when someone would find a reason to complain about the recent current events.
If your complaint is that you need to complete Hearts and Minds to begin this storyline, I think it’s a fair requirement. The Broken Caladbolg is an end-game spoiler, while Eir’s death (which kicks off Season 3) happens at the end of Act 1, which isn’t that high a barrier for players to reach as a spoiler. While completing the final battle is an issue for another thread, it can easily be done in a group and many have done it solo.
If your complaint is about the sword being soulbound to another character, that is a separate complaint altogether. I agree that it probably should’ve been an account-bound only weapon, which does not soulbind upon equip, but be glad that you could even get another copy of it. A lesser game would not have allowed that option for those who did as you did or deleted it outright. Plus, with so much money floating around in the game, spending some to get Elonian Wine to get the sword back is a small price to pay.
Either way, I don’t really sympathise with your plight. It’s nice that they added this event at all, even so long after HoT’s release and the general feedback about it has been pretty positive up until this post, so I’m not sure I see the problem here. Are you hurting for gold so much that 2.5 gold breaks your bank? Or is it just the fact that the sword is bound to another character and you wish you could’ve transferred it over?
Expecting players to horde and hold onto an ugly rare gs is a problem in itself.
I think spending 2.5 Gold for an Ascended Weapon is pretty darn reasonable. No need to horde, or anything else.
It’s an ascended weapon provided as a reward for completing the Heart of Thorns story. My only gripe is the requirement of the Vision Crystal, which requires Crafting to acquire.
You can choose to receive a Vision Crystal from the last Daily Log-In Chest. No crafting required.
Good luck.

Except no one expected people to horde onto it — there’s an option to get it back (which I chose, since, like you, I didn’t hold onto an ugly GS; I forged it instead).
I rather liked this event.
I disliked Trahearne prior to this quest but it actually lessened my antipathy for the character. He will never be one of my favorites but the interactions here left me feeling better about him and his place in the story.
Plus I got an ascended weapon for an hours play and 2.5 gold (without crafting). Probably the best reward that Ive earned in game to date.
I am very happy with this event.

Broken Caladbolg isn’t an ugly rare GS. It’s an ugly rare sword. I just had to point that out. Carry on!
