What did this mean in the shining blade instance when Anise said it to Livia? “You be Shadow for once.”

And then she was, an npc named “Shadow.”

Does this have something to do with Queen Jennah’s cat named Shadow? I’m confused. Who is Shadow?

Shadow was one of the Shining Blade in GW1. Anise and Livia are role playing two old members of the Shining Blade as you relive an event from GW1, normally Anise plays Shadow but this time she wants to swap roles with Livia.

Have to say that…choice by Anise struck me as a little odd. Was it because she wanted to keep an extra close eye on us or something else? Anise’s earlier comment suggests that she’s had her eye on us for a long time, possibly from even before the start of the personal story.

Much longer than you think. She’s actually been watching you from before you ever heard about Guild Wars, probably from your birth. She knew you were destined to play the game one day and become the Commander who defeats Zhaitan and Mordremoth and saves Tyria!

Which is funny, because when I played through the personal story when I first started ~18 months ago, I remarked to my brother (who has played since GW1) that the countess was hotter than the queen…and that seemed wrong.

I think all it meant was that usually when they act out this scene Anise pretends to be Shadow and has to run away to warn the rest of the Shining Blade and Livia gets to be Kiera and do the dramatic death scene.

This time Anise wanted the ‘fun’ part and gave the fairly dull task of running off ‘stage’ to Livia for a change.

Yes, but why? This is the only time we’re going to see this. What does it matter to Anise that she doesn’t play the part of Shadow? That’s the point. If had been any other person than “the Commander” Anise would have run off as Shadow. But she didn’t. Because it was me…er…you…us, whatever.

I’d say the point is to put a big neon sign on “this is play acting, just part of the ritual, you aren’t actually getting swarmed by White Mantle.” It’s something you get in a lot of movies where a character is acting within the show; somehow the “acted” part comes out extra cheesy, or a villainous person has all sorts of I’m a villain tells, just to help the audience along.

I think this is accurate.

Anise and the others never properly explain what’s going on during the trials, which I assume is deliberate since the whole point is to psych you out (like many real-life initiation rituals) and a detailed explanation would ruin that.

That line keeps them in character, which a clear statement that it’s all play-acting would not do, but also serves to let the player know it’s just play-acting and they haven’t actually sent you back in time or got a bunch of White Mantle or whatever.

I know Anise is supposed to be somewhat mysterious (being both a mesmer and the head of what’s basically Kryta’s MI6) but I’m not sure why some people seem to think absolutely every single thing she ever says or does has to have some kind of sinister alternative meaning or intent behind it.
