anet's idea of a labyrinth
Yet numerous people find it extremly difficult to navigate. Go figure.
Labyrintial definition:
An area of disorentiation without the ability to navigate on eye
IF you argue “definition”, a labyrinth is actually supposed to have only one path.
The thing ANet designed is, by definition, a maze.
~ Whips ~ City Minigames ~ City Jumping Puzzles ~
Exactly what Pixelpumpkin said. A Labyrinth is a single path that leads to a centre point. What we have in game is a maze
yea okay, I got that mixed up, apologies for that.
But in that case, it’s not a labyrinth at all, and replace the labyrinth word in my argument with the word maze.
I am sorry but I get the feeling that recently people have started to actively look for something that they can complain on more than ever.
Its not the good ol’ warranted criticizing of major problems anymore. Like the NPE or other bame breaking balance issues.
No, I get the impression some are on the hunt for things to complain on just for the sake of complaining. A bandwagon effect if you will…
It is just a stupid name of an area within the game.
I am pretty sure everyone at Anet knows exactly what a maze or labyrinth is and that the area they have created for us would never be considered an acutal maze.
Now, retain yourself from mindlessly throwing your hate at Anet whereever you can and start focusing your energy on the important issues.
At this rate I would not be surprised if noone of Anet takes the voice of the forum serious anymore.
I dont mean to attack anyone specifically, this is just a common observation.

So what’s the OP saying? A labyrinth/maze is no longer a labyrinth/maze if there is a map of it in existence that one can freely chose whether or not to look at? Or am I missing something? Because if that’s the message, it’s nonsense.
Whenever I am dropped into a labyrinth or a maze, I immediately start making a map.
They’re special! They got aspirations.”
Finn the human
It’s semantics really. But which sounds cooler? Tangled maze? or Tangled labyrinth?
Although there is a slight difference between the two, the term labyrinth has more of a darker connotation then maze, thus the reason for the name.
It’s the chain I beat you with until you
recognize my command!”
Also, The Labyrinth is a map where game’s broken camera system can be shown to great effect. I was nearly sick as the camera kept on constantly zooming in and out on random pieces of the scenery.
And yet no minotaurs; where are the minotaurs, ANet? What sort of labyrinth is this? Anyone else missing a David Bowie cameo?

^ this. I complain when there is some kittened up things goings on, but this kind of post here is just making us who legit complain aiming for a better game looking like a kitten. stop it.

Honestly? My opinion:
- “The Mad King’s Maze* or even “Mad Maze” is cooler, because alliteration. (P.S.: it really is the “Maize Maze” )
- “The Nightmare Maze”: same, for the same reason. (-mare / maze)
- Labyrinthine cliffs – sounds fine (better than “maze-like cliffs” anyway)
If it was the “Lollipop Maze” I might prefer “Lollipop Labyrinth”. Maybe I would have used the world “labyrinth” for “Lunatic Inquisition”. Maybe I would use “labyrinth/layrinthine” in the context of a laboratory or library.
“Labyrinthine”, “tangled”, “twisted” etc. are all more or less synonyms, so it wouldn’t be that difficult to find just the right word, both under semantic (labyrinth vs. maze) and style considerations.
Personally, I think for both the Mad King’s Labyrinth (maze) and the Nightmare Labyrinth (maze) ANet chose poorly.

Ok. It seems you guys are missing the OPs point completely. Or it might be that I’m missing it.
OP doesn’t seem to give … anything about what a Labyrinth is, nor does he care about semantics (even tough his post seems to be about that).
He is saying that a map, with pinging red lights kinda takes out the whole point of a labyrinth, cause you know, you can’t really get lost cause you have the map. The point of a labyrinth in any other game is to get you lost, here the point is … ?
Anyway. I kind of agree, if they would just disable the mini-map during the Labyrinth, and you’d just have to find your allies (during the story) with them yelling would create a much better atmosphere, and would provide a unique (at least for this game so far) challalnge.
Sidenote: Same goes for Ice fractal, teleportation during first boss and dark woods. Would make more sense whitout a mini-map no?
Sad thing is, what I pointed out in my comment above, that even with mini-map, pings, and every other possible handholding people still manage to get lost and rage quit cause it’s “too frustrating”. See other threads, lots of ranting about it.
So once again, a would have been good content ruined by the “everybody must win!!!!” attittude.

I was never a big fan of pacman, which is probably why I don’t even last to the end of the maze stage before getting sick of being one shot. I only need one more piece to open that chest for the very first time. I can get to any part of it, but with no safe place to pause and collect yourself, death is inevitable. Little too old school for me. Whether you find anything to open on a run is mostly down to luck too.
It’s a simple english fail on the writers’ part. They gave in to marketing who like to promote cool-sounding things whether they are correct or not. I see it all the time, and in this case it’s a legitimate complaint especially because it implies the writer doesn’t know the difference and is therefore stupid (which is unlikely to be the case).

Actually the chests have predictable spawn patterns and spots.
For me, the risk of being oneshot adds a degree of excitement and risk. Especially when your engi somehow “superspeeds” and healing kit 5 manages to outrun the wolf until it latches on to another poor soul unlucky enough to come close to you while being chased.

Just deactivate the mini-map and you have a labyrinth where you navigate by our eyes only.

You expected the internet to be any different? Or the official forums, for that matter?

It would have been awesome if we had a single Mordrem Minotaur enemy that is accompanied by dozens of Mordrem Lurchers that are on par to the story instance Lurcher; the Minotaur would just charge down paths instadowning rows of players, while the Lurchers cripple and widdle players’ healths down.
Guess they could have used the special Teragriff model instead of a minotaur though. That should have been the Mordrem Punisher, not some troll that was barely more difficult than a regular Mordrem Troll aside from a much greater health pool. And none would have markers, but the Teragriff (aka “minotaur”) would be occasionally pinged — ooh, or better yet, player defeats by it are pinged. So you don’t even see where the Tergriff is, you just see its bloody trail.
Gods, now I’m wanting that instead…
I can just see the thrill of being chased by Lurchers, expertly evading them, then suddenly, at the end of the path I’m going down, MoFo Teragriff comes charging down, and it’s just an “oh kitten kitten kitten kitten” moment.
Labyrinthine cliffs – sounds fine (better than “maze-like cliffs” anyway)
Going by definition, there’s only one path to the top at Labyrinthine Cliffs, so it really is a labyrinth, not a maze. :P
Stop treating GW2 as a single story. Each Season and expansion should be their own story.

Yeah! And I didn’t see a single axe anywhere! Now now I’m not one of those puritans that require doubled headed axes, but an axe here and there would have been a nice touch. Don’t see how you could call it a labyrinth otherwise…

I must say those those Lurchers don’t even look anything like the offspring of Pasiphaë and Cretan Bull (the logistics of which merits not googling)!

In which case he shouldn’t be including definitions and basing his argument on said definitions. It’s just inviting pedantry.

I am genuinely concerned that this has not been implemented as-is; I’d take great pleasure in seeing how hard the minimap is pinged during the labyrinth. At least a death count right underneath the essences-found variable, yeah?

Here’s a big labyrinth for you. We just found out about the place, but don’t worry, here’s a map, a detailed lineup for your friends locations whom we have lost contact with, an immortal ally who will kill the hall monitor for you and yea.. thats about it. Don’t get lost.. oh right, we made sure you can’t so don’t worry

Sure, the story instance is simple, but its story, everyone needs to be able to do it…
Hell there are people COMPLAINING its to difficult, you can’t please everyone.
But the lab was introduced in the story with the idea of it being an explorable area not difficult to navigate, but difficult to navigate ALIVE while trying hard to get loots.
