so.... where's the new stuff
Although I am sure some will agree with your suggestions, I am afraid the things you want more of, and less of, are not the things I would enjoy.
Thus, the Devs are left in a conundrum. Who to please?
Even if they were going to give you everything you wanted did you really expect it all at once in the very first update?
Especially since a lot of the stuff you mentioned will be included in feature packs rather than living story releases in an attempt to stop people fixating on one part of an update (usually the story) and insisting that one thing is all they ever add to the game.
“Life’s a journey, not a destination.”
The big problem i see with Season 2 with this last release, is that Achievements, seem to be the only other content, besides the story, and a few events. The last update, Festival of the Four Winds, had more stuff to do: Aspect Arena, Scavenger Hunt, Jumping Puzzle, Dolyak Race, Charged Crystal Event, Gauntlet, Boss Blitz, etc.
There’s more to come though, if they keep releasing every 2 weeks.

All of which had achievements associated with them.

to be honest, the threads for the living story wishlists are all we really need to take a look at here. All that those wishlists ask for is something to go alongside it.
I am, of course, not asking for all of this content all at once because that would be silly (unless they make an expansion which they are firmly not doing).
One or two of these things thrown into a LS patch would bring new content not only to PVE but PVP and WVW. there are MORE people to this game than the people who do LS and PVE’ers.
Also, I would like to add that we were promised precursor crafting a LONG time ago so at least add that one thing first.
TLDR: not all my ideas, add precursor crafting, not all about PVE.

That’s kind of my point though. Achievements seem to be the only form of content, instead of other stuff the OP listed. Our characters are still the same, and have not progressed with skills or new weapon types. We have gotten new Traits, but that’s it.

not only this, it was only 6 traits edit per class** that most people don’t even use in their current builds. there have been no “game changers” for a long while. I feel like my character has been stagnant since level 80 (1 week into release).

Well there you go then. You’ve got one of the things you asked for: a new permanent area with explorable content that you don’t need to do the story to access.
I doubt most people realised this because they probably went straight for the story but you can walk straight into Dry Top and do all the events, achievements, etc. without ever touching the story.
And once again a lot of the stuff you’ve asked for including precursor crafting would not be in the Living Story. They used to release a few features alongside each release but apparently that lead to too many people ignoring them so they’ve switched to doing rarer updates entirely dedicated to new features. The first one was in April (added the wardrobe, new traits and the new trait system, new PvP rewards and many other things). We don’t know when the second one will be yet but we do know they’re going to do more.

I don’t know about everyone else, but i found that i had to do the LS to get to the new area… not complete it to explore it, but i had to at least get through the (((SPOILERS))) big golem quest to do it.
I mean absolutely no offense by this, but, if it took you 40 minutes to play through the Gates of Maguuma story then you’re probably doing something wrong. I mean that’s, what, not even one sandstorm?
Go back and retrace your steps to find out what you’ve missed.
p.s. Of course you’re not alone, though. There is no such thing as a thing big enough for a “rushing player” to take a few weeks to get through. The first ever level 80 took less than two days, and the first group of people to Orr took less than a week.

if you thought that this was going to be more than just the first episode of many updates over the following months, then you were A: overhyped or B: fooling your self. don’t worry i belong to one or both categories myself.
i too expected something “more” even though i tried to keep my expectations low. turns out that this is just episode one, like the pilot episode of your favorite tv show. alot of people, myself included, were expecting this to be like the season premier of the second season of your favorite tv show. where some of the built up tension and excitement from last season’s finale carries over in the aftermath.
i thought that they would learn from flame and frost that gradual build up may not be the way to go with the LW. thus i assumed that they would start off with a bang, follow up with a distraction, then build in intensity from there. looks like they are just setting groundwork for the story and testing out how their new systems work on live. if they put much more than a new map and a reworked LS/PS journal into one update the game would probably be unplayable due to bugs and lag. this is all forgivable after taking a second to shrug off my minor disappointments, which wasn’t hard considering all the fun i’ve been having.
no matter how you look at it, getting a new permanent map(even part of one.) for a LW update is amazing and when you take into account that this map fragment is better than alot of full size maps(cough*southsun*cough) on its own, its even more amazing.
