The Living World in Guild Wars 2 is ArenaNet’s official term for changes to the game intended to bring the world of Guild Wars 2 to life. Each major game update includes NPCs, events, and sometimes new instances that tell the story of Tyria’s ongoing evolution. Although most of the Living World content has been temporary, these updates also have included permanent changes to the in-game world.

The Living World has more or less beeing canceled because players in the forums
constanly complained that they don’t liked it because it was temporary content.

So instead of new content every 2 weeks we no get maybe 1 expansion every
2 years.

EVERY MMO is awesome until it is released then its unfinished. A month after release it just sucks.
Best MMOs are the ones that never make it. Therefore Stargate Online wins.

In the first season we had an evolving story that we got every 2 weeks that lasted about four before vanishing forever. So there was always something new to do and earn achievements for and sometimes an exclusive (not as much anymore) skin or title. It’s like going on vacation and when you returned home you missed some major event in your town. You weren’t there so you didn’t get to experience it. The world moves on.

For those players who took time off, they were disappointed that they missed sometimes map altering events as well as rewards. The remnants of those events are everywhere, the most obvious until recently was the destroyed Lion’s Arch although the devastation of Kessex Hills is still quite prominent. There was a believe by some that the work that went into this type of content doesn’t really count as content due to it’s transitory nature. Also because it didn’t last for long, a dedicated player could accomplish all of it in a matter of hours, most players a day or two and so the argument was also that it wasn’t much content.

That led to the 2nd season which takes place in two new zones with minimal if any changes to the rest of the Tyria maps. It was shorter with 8 instead of 20 chapters but those chapters don’t go away and can be replayed by every character current or future. This second season ties the first season to the expansion in terms of story.

Season 1 had to be my favorite tbh.
I mean we had Super Adventure box, for 1… probably my favorite content of the game to date.
And escape from Lions Arch, plus the battle for Lions arch, kicking Scarlet’s kitten was amazing . I also really enjoyed the community’s team work with the bosses involved during those events. Probably one of my fondest Living World content in a wide environment for PvE, so far. It Put SW to shame… in terms of fun.

Season 2 had some really good parts, too, like the Caithe storyline and playthrew, and fighting the dragon.
I just didn’t enjoy how the content was poured out and how little effort was needed to complete something that should last longer than an hour. It felt typical and more boring as I wondered why i cared to see the next chapter come about. Of course, replaying it from the start to the end (now it’s all unlocked) might make it feel smoother and more enjoyable, despite it still being long drawn out and segmented.

Yeah, the Queens Gauntlet event with all the boss battles was probably one of my favorites too.

Basically though, the Living World concept was designed to be a way to constantly update and add content without the need to release and charge for expansions. IMO, it’s a pretty cool idea and I really enjoyed it. But yeah, the problem is that if you’re on hiatus from playing the game, you miss a lot and sometimes really cool weapons or items. I missed out on the events for crafting Mawdry, so I’m stuck throwing away bloodstone dust until they add a core thing that’ll eat it like Princess does for dragonite. Some of the items required were only available as rewards for doing that living world segment.

Mawdrey is something you can do in LS 2 part 4 which you can still get access to for 200 gems if you don’t have access already.

The living world was once a free of charge update series with story and events. Then community itself raised unconfidence and wanted to have an addon instead. Now the usual feature patches and living world updates are put into a expansion and are charged off^^

They want to be cashed off for it? Thanks god its summertime

The loss of confidence was the poor handling of the events, and their (lack of) permanence in the world. LS season 1 is, by far, some of the greatest stories and events in the game’s history (outshining even GW1 in some respects). But once the event was over, the after math on both the economy and the crafting landscape left a terrible taste in people’s mouths. The rewards became unobtainable, many still being highly desirable, and often changes that can effect the Core game for the better have to be discarded due to inaccessibility after the event.

The last straw was the lack luster events tied to Season 2, despite the strong story potential. Dry top and Silverwastes are just mindless farming areas. And what little mechanical gains the aspect shards in dry top give are largely lost amid the need to farm events just to unlock other events in the sandstorm phase…. And that time in stand storm directly competes with the chest farming, turning the map mobility from interesting change into a hindrance.

The release schedule of the map “chunks” was also poorly executed. With 2 weeks between story chapters and map unlocks, we spend the majority of that time doing nothing but farming for random drops we NEED in order to craft the new gear spec introduced. By the time we have the resources we need, we’re sick of the area, and become enraged to discover the stat combo we worked so hard for offers very little benefit to the existing game meta.
