(Foreword: My current signature is being replaced, so I’m not adding to the current one you see below, ignore that.)

I attempted to put a signature line that is 97 characters long, but the signature editor says it’s more than 100 characters long. Why is that? How do I know the line is 97 characters long? Because I put it in twitter, and it said I have 43 characters left. So Guild Wars 2 seems to be counting something it shouldn’t.

Also, I put an asterisk before the line, so it may be thinking it needs to place a bullet point, if that’s the case, signatures should have formatting disabled rather than giving an error, and allow us to use asterisks.

If it is anything like your current signature the hypen being used ( – ) has a chracters code which requires 2 bytes when encoded using UTF-8 (which is commonly used). My guess is the validation is counting bytes instead of actual characters. Try using the standard hypen – instead of – or some other separator.

Nope it has no special characters except ( and ) and an asterisk, as well as spaces and a period and a comma.

I hit this limit for some reason a while ago and what I remember is that it counts line breaks and certain symbols as characters. Thus Twitter isn’t a good tool for determining whether you are over the limit or not.

Instead, I just rewrote the sig to be close to 90 characters and avoided the issue.

So, if I were ANet, instead of troubleshooting the actual issue, I’d just put a smaller number in the error message. That way, anyone going slightly over the stated length won’t even realize they did and anyone going over it will get a more useful target, and for which Twitter would be a good tool to use.

Can you post here the text you want to put in your signature?

Try putting this in your signature:

* (A strange light fills the room. Twilight is shining ahead. You’re filled with, DETERMINATION.)

And only that, no line breaks or anything. Yes, including the asterisk.

EDIT: it worked for me … Your text has 97 characters, I don’t see why it is causing a problem, BTW in my sig options only the 1st one is checked, the rest is blank.

This didn’t work for me before, now it does. The forum admins must have changed something before you tried it.

The forum admins have very little ability to adjust such things. What’s more likely is that your text had hidden characters in it, which counted towards the 100-char limit. The forum tech is convoluted enough that sometimes it adds those hidden chars when you try to save or copy or paste stuff.

Well, I put it in notepad before, and it still didn’t work, and notepad can’t use hidden invisi-characters.

The forum inserts its own invisible characters sometimes.
