I’ve been running a full set of Ogre runes on most toons now and I’m over the Rock Dog thing and want to seek other options, this time mixing runes. Used this set a lot in WvW, EOTM and even PvP lately.

Description of full set:

Superior Rune of the Ogre (6/6)
(1): +25 Power
(2): +35 Ferocity
(3): +50 Power
(4): 25% chance when struck to summon a rock dog. (Cooldown: 90s)
(5): +100 Power
(6): +4% damage

The rock dog has it’s ups and downs I will admit, in some cases it helps by drawing aggro for a short duration but other times it dies within a few hits. The CD on it if it dies quickly is a waste, plus it relies solely on you being hit in the first place.

I’m thinking of mixing 5 Superior Runes of the Mesmer with 1 Superior Rune of the Ogre and here is what the outcome will be:

(1): +25 Power
(2): +35 Precision
(3): + 50 Power
(4): + 65 Precision
(5): + 100 Power
(6): +25 Power

I like the idea of that Precision instead of the Rock Dog spawning considering I will be running a full set of zerker gear/trinkets etc.

My first and foremost question(s) is where does the +4% Damage from the original set of Ogre runes go – on top of my Power? And if so, is that better than the +25 Power from this mix ‘n’ match set I’ve thought of?

I have the intention of using this mix ‘n’ match set on my full zerker Engi. I noticed the +25 Power with food + utility consumables totals to exactly 2,700 Power as opposed to the full set of Ogre runes as the +4% Damage is hidden(?) somewhere.

All in all, I’ve also considered the full set of Mesmer Runes seeing as ANet released this latest balance patch which now grants a 1 second Daze with “Launch Personal Battering Ram” for the Engi. The 6th slot thing with Mesmer Runes is an interesting +33% Daze duration.

So yeah, any thoughts/help/comments will be extremely appreciated~

To figure out if the 4% is better than 25 Power, get your current power rating, then divide it by 100, and multiply the number you get by 4, this signifies 4% of your power. If that number is higher than 25, the +4% is better.

Or you could take scholar/ ranger.

He said wvw so scholar runes are a bad idea and unless your using the minipet bug(or are playing a ranger/mesmer) then the 6th ranger rune is useless.

OP try pack runes 175 pow 125 pre 10sec of group fury, might, swiftness on a 20sec cd and 30% swiftness duration make it a nice all around dps rune.

4% Damage is FAR better than 25 power. The 4% dmg won’t show up anywhere, it will be multiply on your dmg when you attack.

Like Cyrill said, try Runes of the Pack. At first look it doesn’t seem that good, but in PvP the fury will boost your dmg by a lot. But it depend a lot on what build and profession you are using. You shouldn’t use the same runes for all your toons and all game modes.

Runes of Pack are definitely WAY under-rated. A good solid (and economical) choice.

Another might be Rune of the Ranger as I understand that an active Mini counts as a Companion (so free 7% damage boost)

(4): +65 Ferocity.png Ferocity

(6): +7% damage while you have an active companion.
