I mainly play an Elementalist and am looking to branch out a bit. I’m hoping to roll an alt that is fun and varied.

My guildies are pretty split, as opinions go, on which professions are best for this. There’s fairly even votes it seems on Guardian, Thief and Mesmer.

The scuttlebutt on the aforementioned three professions goes something like this:

Guardian: solid but can be boring
Thief: high damage, fragile but very few viable builds
Mesmer: lots of variability but can be frustrating

Just looking to get some input. I play mainly PvE and Wv3, looking to branch into sPvP soon. Thanks!

I started on an ele and really like it. I agree on the Guardian. I’m currently leveling one to 80 and it is fun ,but really fristrating cause it is just too easy. If you, like me want to haver another guardian in the guild cause you dont have enough of them, then do it. But it makes the game just too easy imo.

Thief: I dont play that, might try it ion the feature, tried it till lvl 5 but disliked it (and dont recal the reason(s).

Mesmer: No its not frustrating. Mesmers are easy to play if your good with an ele, but again very boring and straight forward.

My personal advise would be an engineer. beside my ele it is my main. they follow simular mechanics. But where the ele changes attunements, the engineer changes kits. Where an ele has a rather general set of skills for each attunement, the engineer has very specialised skills for every kit. They are the special ops, and every toolkit is another challenge to master.

With an ele main i decided to make a mesmer alt, really enjoying it atm! its not necessarily easy to play! a few of the utility skills make you pretty good to have in a wvw party and the skill animations look great
I also have level 80 warrior and guardian alts that barely get used because the gameplay seems so slow compared to ele.

I’m a new player but I’m just gonna throw in my two cents.

The elementalist is really fun and the gameplay is exciting. I’m still trying out the professions I may want to play, and I originally didn’t want to try the guardian or warrior (I’m not really into the close-up play and I am used to playing healing classes). But then the necromancer I was using didn’t work out (I just didn’t like it; the minions are so squishy and draw aggro when you’re just walking around) so I decided to try out the guardian.

I think the guardian is really fun!…when you give them a hammer bwaha. It’s just so amusing to see my character pound into the ground and send enemies flying. Plus I am a big team player and it seems like the guardian is great for running dungeons.

Main character: Reichle Sylvari Ranger 39
Server: Crystal Desert
Representing guild: Diamond Legacy

My first character is an elementalist, and my second character is an engineer.

I like the engineer because the weapon kits and toolbelt skills provide skill variety that reminds me of attunements, and many of the other utility skills (especially gadgets) provide the character with a modicum of (useful) wackiness.

If the complex playstyle of the elementalist is your benchmark, then many of the other classes will seem boring or monotonous by comparison. That is certainly my impression with the warrior, thief and ranger I have also played. I am yet to try guardian, necromancer and mesmer, though, and especially the mesmer seems promising.

A friend of mine mained an ele, and then after trying a few seems to be really liking ranger. It’s not the most looked after of classes, but it’s a nice mix of range and melee, and it has the pets a fun and completely unique mechanic.

Personally I like guardian though. It is an easy class to play, but it is also a really useful group member. You can just smash into stuff, but if you’re playing with others then there’s also a lot of support you can provide.

On a more basic level, given the focus on aesthetics in the game, maybe going for a non-light armour class will be the simplest advice.

Mesmer gets my vote.

THIS spec is awsome for solo roaming in WvW. A quick 3s trait swap to one of the glamour specs gives an awsome mass WvW spec with no need to change gear either.

Thanks for the replies ya’all. From your input and a bit of experimentation, pretty sure I’m going to roll an Asura Mesmer and a Sylvari Engineer as alts. Or maybe Asura Engineer and Sylvari Mesmer, haven’t decided for sure yet.
