I’m writing this as hopefully it will help others who are victims of CRS (Character Restart Syndrome) just like I am. I thought about it while scuba diving today, so hopefully its not an idea induced by nitrogen narcosis.
Anyways, my problem with selecting classes has always been multiple issues, from subconscious needs to roleplay conflicting with wanting to have viable characters that don’t drag the party down or are so frustrating to play that its an exercise in futility.
Now granted, class balance is always changing, so you can’t make your decision based on power levels of classes and/or races. What I decided was to try and boil down the essence of each race and class, and pair them up as best I could. So rather than playing roleplay concepts, or powergaming concepts, or finding the least/most played race and profession combos, I was playing the essence of both, and so far it seems my CRS has been cured, or at least in remission. Below are my pair-ups and short justifications:
Humans – embody the concept of versatility and adaptability. As a race of survivors and refugees, no other race is as close to the knife edge of oblivion as this one. For this race, I chose Elementalist and Engineer, the two professions in GW2 that most coincide with the idea of situational adaptability. Ele and Engy can do any job in the game, frequently on the fly with no need for re-spec or weapon changes, giving them unparalleled versatility in the field.
Asura – the troll race. Not actual Trolls, but given their personalities, mental faculties and comical animations, this race seems to embody for me the ideas of mentally superior pranksters, sort of like Mr. Mxyzptlk from Superman lore. The two professions I can most closely link to this would be the Thief and Mesmer, both of which rely on misdirection and canny play to succeed.
Charr – embody the concepts of militarism and expansionism. Charr are of course technologically capable, having given birth to the Engineer technology, but this is simply another weapon in the kitten nal for their “hat” which is the stereotypical warlike race, such as Klingons or Kilrathi. Given that, Charr get Warrior, as no other class fully embodies their ideals as much as the one that brings the pain, 24/7.
Norn – this race embodies the ideas of nature worship and the inner power of their beast selves. Externally, most Norn are aggressive and boisterous, which might make you think they get Warrior, but no, for me that is not the case. Everything about the race screams “nature first” and if there were a Druid profession they would be a lock. Since there isn’t, Norn overwhelmingly get Ranger, as this race more than any other is a people that defends their way of life with the power of Nature suffusing their very being.
Sylvari – while literally being born from a connection to nature, the Sylvari do not really embody it, at least for me. Their connection to each other and the Pale Tree are more akin to an ant colony than nature worshippers, and their inborn skills, profession and/or Wyld Hunt potentially throw serious doubt as to the extent of Sylvari free will and self determination. That being said, what the Sylvari do embody is the duality of good and evil, and the war it wages within each of us. This can be seen in the personality of Caithe, and on a larger scale the split with the Nightmare Court. This leads me to conclude that the Necromancer and Guardian are best suited to embody the essence of the Sylvari, the Guardian being the one to charge off to do valorous battle with the Dragons, the Necromancer to work against the Dream to corrupt it so that the Sylvari might possess more self determination and not be bound by the morals of a human tablet.
So perhaps not so small and short, but if you took the time to read it, and it helps you to take an alternative tack in your profession choice, then my work is done!
