Q:
A bit confused about masteries
You need to level up the mastery useing exp core tyria gives exp to legendary crafting fractals pact commander.
And heart of thorns zones + living world sesason 3 zones give exp towards gliding, and the other hot masteries.
But don’t you earn mastery points that let you level up the mastery? If not, what is the point of having mastery points at all? Right now I have 1 HoT mastery point that I used on Gliding – great, awesome! I know I need to build more. But I have 9 Tyria mastery points that I can’t seem to use at all. Do I need to unlock something else to be able to use those?
You need to set your training to a Core Tyria Mastery line, and then do content in Core Tyria to gain Core Tyria XP to fill said Mastery line. Once that Core Tyria Mastery line is full, you can use one (or more) Core Tyria Mastery Points to unlock the Core Tyria Mastery feature.
Core Tyria and HoT Masteries are completely separate. You can’t earn points or experience in the opposite region.

Good luck.

Yes but you use experience to level up the lines then when maxed out you spend points to unlock the next mastery level.
The core tyria ones I would suggest you spend on pact commander to get auto loot in the end.
You still level up in this game just that you level the masteries instead of character levels like in most other games.
Edit
I would suggest to do daily fractals to gain exp towards core tyria mastery or go map complete/ world boss run in base game.
Ok, I understand. Each Mastery “track” has to be leveled up to unlock it, and only then can you use your Mastery points on it? Everything I read previously said that once you finish Torn from the Sky then masteries are open to you, so I didn’t realize each track has to be leveled up itself independently of earning mastery points, that’s surprising.

Yes they are open to you you can chose witch one to level up mate.
You just cant run before you can walk so to speak so no gliding level 3 without first completing level 1 and level 2.
Edit
Donno were you have been reading but the wiki is a great tool
https://wiki.guildwars2.com/wiki/Mastery
When you own Heart of Thorns, and one of your character reaches level 80 and completes the story chapter Torn from the Sky, the Masteries tab will unlock in the Hero panel for your account
afew lines under
All experience gained on any level 80 character on your account while in one of the regions will be applied to the respective active mastery. You can freely switch the active masteries without any cost, as the amount of experience previously gained will be saved until you return to train that mastery. Once the current active mastery is fully trained by obtaining enough experience, the experience bar will start blinking and you can spend a certain amount of mastery points in the Masteries tab to permanently unlock the mastery on your account.

From what I had read, obviously inaccurately, it seemed that XP would work towards giving you a point AND/OR you could use mastery points you’d earned through achievements to level up your masteries. So I thought once I did Torn from the Sky, all masteries would be open to me and I could then spend my points where I wanted and work on getting more – like how you open up a specialization and then can spend your hero points. You don’t have to “unlock” each specialization by leveling it with XP before putting points into it, you just need to unlock the slots at 21, 45, 71. So it was surprising that it doesn’t work that way for masteries.
That is not quite true either. You have to fully unlock your core specialization in order to unlock the elite specialization.
Also maybe go back to where ever you got your info from and tell them they are providing bad information?
