A few questions
You can get the keys as drops from mobs and as rewards for map completion. I haven’t gotten many that way but enough to get some decent items from the chests. I’ve saved my unopened chests in one stack in the bank to open when I get keys.
One of your chat windows should show your loot. Check to make sure you have a window set up to see loot.
Open your “H” window and you should see where your weapons go. There is a place for the underwater weapon under where the harvesting tools are located. You only use that weapon underwater. You can also see where your other weapons go in that window.
Hey malakhi!
I’m gonna try to help you with the questions
1) the chests can only be unlocked with the key, i had the luck to find one as a loot drop once, but the last 2 months i haven’t found any. So if Anet has taken them out off the loot drops, then the only way to open them is with a key from the Gemstore.
You can sell them locked, no problem there, but i’m not sure how the demand is for them, so check the prices before you post!
2) All loot you get, from chest, from gathering and so on are displayed on the right edge off the screen, and only for a few seconds. So check that side off your screen the next time you loot a chest
3) same as 2, check the right side off the screen
4) I think you have equiped a “water weapon”, like spears, tridents and stuff. They are the weapons you use when you are under water and are different from those you use on land.
5) not sure about that, but i also got that message once and it means you are on the border off the instance. On your map you see an area that is cross out and this is the zone that lies outside the instance. When you walk into that part, you exit the instance and have to enter again. But i’m not sure how it works on your progress. Maybe just try it out if you have the time for it and if not, just keep inside the instance
I hope that i could help you a bit and i’m sure that if i’m wrong, somebody better informed will correct me real soon

The only way to open a Black Lion Chest is with a store bought key?
Generally yes. You also get a small number of keys as rewards for story progression and very rarely as drops but the number of chests you’ll find far outweighs the number of keys you’ll find.
BTW You’ll never get anything particularly amazing or game-breaking from the chests. Some items are useful or on very rare occasions valuable but none will make a big difference to the game and you shouldn’t feel like you have to buy keys or open chests to play.
Can the chests be sold locked on the Auction House?
Yes. They’re not worth much though because so many people have spare chests to sell.
When I opened a chest, it never listed the loot in the chat window, does it list it anywhere?
It’s shown briefly on the right side of the screen, above the map. It also shows up in green in the chat window if you have ‘Game Messages’ turned on.
But probably the simplest way unless you’re wanting to count drops per chest or something is to just look at the items in your inventory.
I opened a bag of coins that I got from a chest, again I couldn’t see the amount of coins I received.
Same as above I think.
As a Guardian, it shows that I can use a 2h weapon, but I can’t equip it as a main weapon, instead it goes into the boosts. I noticed the weapon come out when I was underwater in an instance.
Harpoons, Spearguns and Tridents are underwater-only weapons. They go into different slots – to the right of the Hero panel under your accessories and crafting components and can only be used when you’re underwater. (But you’ll want to have at least one because you can’t use land weapons underwater either.)
In an instance, I was having trouble and wanted to go back, kill some monsters, and level up. I got the message you are about to be kicked… would this mean that I would have lost all progress I had made in the instance?
It depends on the instance and how much progress you had made. Some of them have ‘checkpoints’ and if you die or leave you contine from that part of the storyline. Others you would have to start from the begining.
But in general I’d say if you’re having trouble and want to level up first (especially if you’re below the recommended level for the instance) it’s better to do it and start over than struggle through the instance.
Also bear in mind that in this game it’s only possible to out-level content in certain areas (mainly the personal story instances) and it only really works at the lower levels.
Ultimately what makes a big difference is making sure you have the best equipment for your level and most importantly a good set of skills and the traits to match (and you know how to use them effectively). That will get you a lot further than trying to out-grind content.
