A little help finding the next right class
Open world PvE in core Tyria does not represent end-game combat very well (e.g. raids, fractals, HoT maps) nor does it give you a good idea how PvP combat works.
Anyway, look at the bottom of this thread:

Thanks for the info, good stuff in there. I definitely appreciate there is a difference in open world vs other environments but for a little additional insight I primarily am interested in PvP.
What appealed to me about the Engineer is the sheer number of abilities to toggle through and chain together for best possible combos. Higher skill cap the better! Thanks again!
Still looking for a little more info. Leaning towards thief but would like a better understanding of Necro/Reaper, mostly level of difficulty.
Have you thought about an elementalist? Melee builds have excellent dps but require skill to stay alive since health is so low. Their profession mechanic gives them 20 weapon skills and some nice combo options, so it might share some of the things you liked about the engi (though I haven’t really played engi, so I’m not sure how they compare). I too got bored with guard, and found ele was the support class I was looking for. Good support and damage at the cost of a low health pool — much more interesting to play than blocking and healing everything while waiting for the enemy’s health to go down…
That said, DH gets a nice dps boost and more of a risk/reward feel in the traps. Lots of them this last PvP season because it was fairly easy for new people to pick up. Just drop a bunch of traps and other noobs will walk right into them, though at higher levels people are better at avoiding them and the class becomes more challenging and less common.
Reaper (power/minion build a friend created) is my PvP class right now. Shroud gives some nice survivability, and for PvE it’s a class I would recommend to new players because you basically have a double health bar. However, in PvP this tankiness makes means I’ll take on a 2v1, 1v1 almost anyone, and often rez allies. So I guess I make it harder for myself. People tend to focus necros, too. I’m not a really serious PvPer, but I can’t imagine playing anything but necro right now. I can solo lords in foefire, teleport with fleshworm behind the keep in niflhel, and stomp with pulsing stability in shroud.
I hardly play thief; there’s definitely a high skill bar to reach and I’m not at it! They can be deadly if played well, though usually not against my necro build (unless they have help)…
Haven’t played WoW so I can’t compare for you. Hope this is helpful!
in fact, we’re going to put the goons to sleep.
Meanwhile – we dig.
If your looking for a challenging class, to me the Mesmer can be that challenge. One of my mains is a necro, and I do encourage every one to have a couple of them. I have different necros so I don’t have to switch back and forth on gear/skill sets. Honestly there is no real challenge in guardians. (personal opinion) but the best bet, is just try one of each and get a feel for it.
Thanks everybody for the feedback. All very helpful, especially Teaniel.
Deedrick I had heard that about Mesmers but magey classes were never my thing and the wife plays an ele. Her reroll is a ranger…
Gonna go with thief for now and see how I like it. Necro certainly won’t be far behind.
