Q:
Is there a way to ground AoE at the targets location without using the mouse or having the mouse pointer sitting in the middle of my screen?
EDIT: I know if I place the mouse pointer under the “Weapon Swap” button then it will flag all Ground Target AoEs at my character location. This works fine for melee characters but for lets say a Thief with Shortbow it doesnt work so much.

don’t think there is. cannot imagine playing this game without mouse. turning alone would be painful.
why would you want aoe at target location? it would miss moving targets.
there are aoe effects like mesmers feedback that have no targeting and works at target location. i find it highly disadvantageous. because i need to carefully select target. likewise with ground targeting aoes i can just point mouse in that direction and cast it (with smartcast on, a.k.a. fast ground targeting somewhere in options).
I dunno if this will help….but I double tap my AOE’s on my engi. I can still move the target a bit cause i hold the right mouse button down while running and just move the mouse around while strafing.
Makes sense to me…but maybe the explanation doesn’t :P
That kind of defeats the purpose of AoE… plus even if that was possible, most AoE attacks take time to cast/travel so whenever your target would be moving, you would miss because you didn’t aim ahead in your target’s path…
Bottom line… impossible and even if it was possible would be a terrible idea most of the times (unless you’re face tanking everything on a guardian)

If your targets path is you…then how would you miss? If it isn’t, then you don’t have to worry about aiming so much.
But I think you may be thinking of some other AOE than the many an Engi might use….cause I don’t miss much
not really but in the options there is a fast cast ground targeting. that might work out better for u. what it does is instantly casts the aoe wherever ur mouse pointer is. instead of placing the green targeting circle.

The OP is talking about ground-cast skills. There’s no way to make them not ground cast, typically. He’s just asking if there’s a way to ground-cast that isn’t dependent upon the mouse.

What the OP is talking about is already an implemented feature (not only possible but already done), so I’m not sure what you’re talking about. Frankly it typically works quite well.
In response to the OP’s question, I don’t believe there is any way to designate your ground-cast targets without the mouse. Much of the mouse-related controls are not configurable in virtually any way. Fast-cast targeting will eliminate the need to click, but you’ll still need to indicate your target area through cursor placement.
If you’re asking if there’s a way to make your AoE spells always hit your targeted target, then no, there is no way to do that (and there shouldn’t be, though I enjoy seeing a subset of skills that work that way by design).
If you’re asking because you’re tired of losing your target when you mis-click to drop your ground spell, then yes, there is. Instead of clicking to lay the spell at the reticule, you can press the skill button again.
So, for Mesmer Staff#5 (Chaos Storm) for example, if you are doing this:
Press 5 – Aim Reticule – Left-Click
Instead, you can do this:
Press 5 – Aim Reticule – Press 5
Doesn’t save you from having to aim the spell, but it does avert the target change dilemma. I think this is the “double tap” Gestankfaust was referring to.
Edit: Haven’t actually gotten in to play in a while (stupid life), forgot there actually already are AoE-At-Target skills – like Feedback.

Actually, you’re wrong. What the OP wants is a way to have his AoE’s automatically occur at his target, which is not in the game nor any other MMO i can think of, because that DOES defeat the purpose of an AoE insofar as you can control where it is.

Actually, you’re wrong. There are plenty of MMOs in which AoEs are cast directly at your target, including this one. Ground-cast skills are one subset of AoEs, point-blank-AoE-on-target are another. See, for example, Fireball or Splinter Shot. The only way to control where those occur is choosing which target to cast them at.
No, there is no way to convert a ground-cast into a PBAoE on target.
