Q:

Was having a debate today about AOE with a buddy and I distinctly remeber reading somewhere that aoe can only hit 4 mobs at a time. Buddy thinks I am FOS and I could not back up my statement of only hitting 4 mobs at a time with AOE. I cant remember where I read it at.

Can anyone “for sure confirm” that AOE can hit more than 4 mobs or caps at 4 mobs. Example would be that there are 6 mobs standing in an Elementalist Skill Shower and lets say that it pulses damage once every second on 4 of the 6 mobs, however each pulse isnt guranteed to hit the same 4 mobs on each pulse. Pulse 1 hits mobs 1-4, pulse 2 hits mobs 2-5, pulse 3 hits mobs 3-6 and so forth.

My buddy is saying that as it pulses each second so long as all 6 mobs are in the target area it will hit all 6 mobs on every damage pulse.

If this 4 cap is true and you can confirm where it says it at, that would be fantastic. This question isn’t a complaint about skill shower at all and the mechanic of skill shower could be very different from what I listed (I don’t play an elementalists so I don’t know) I just chose to use it as my made up example since it’s a very common form of AOE seen in the game.

Talking about Meteor Shower specificly, it only does damage if the meteor hits a target (bad on small mobs) – http://wiki.guildwars2.com/wiki/Meteor_Shower

But in reference to AOE caps – http://wiki.guildwars2.com/wiki/Area_of_effect
Seems the cap is 5….interesting to know if true

Can’t say I have seen a cap with my grenade engineer though, especially underwater since its easier to group mobs up (to me)

The cap is 5 for most skills. Some have a lower threshold, but it is usually listed on the skill.

This prevents WvW from being dominated too heavily by AoE so people don’t feel overly pigeonholed.

If you want to test it yourself, I suggest you find a big group of low-level stuff. I recall in one of the borderlands WvW maps there is a big cluster of rabbit critters in the northernmost supply camp. I think there are more than 5, simply because I remember blasting them on my elementalist and being a bit surprised that they didn’t all die. I got an achievement for doing lots of damage at once, though.
