Advantages of crafting
crafting is especially useful for several things. considering you don’t need the experience nor do you want to turn a profit, this will limit you to:
-anything account bound
-potions
-consumables
-runes/sigils
-back pieces
-achievement points
it is very beneficial to have some crafting disciplines up there in rank. while it is true that many things are simply cheaper just to buy outright, but this is only if you do not have the mats. if you have a stockpile of materials saved up, it will (almost) always be cheaper to craft it.
one notable exception is watchwork sprockets. it takes 500 to make a refined one. 500 sprockets cost about 15g, while a refined one costs 10.
tldr; if you have mats and want account bound things, do it.
If you eventually go for a legendary, you’ll also need 2 specific crafting disciplines at 400 (where you need level 500 to be able to make ascended gear). The disciplines you need depend on the legendary. You’ll still need that if you go for a precursor with the new system we’re getting, since that only gets the precursor and not the legendary.
Also, for ascended drops you get, you’ll need an exotic inscription/insignia to change the stats – and if it’s in a crafting discipline, you may have gathered the materials you need to make it by that point. Convenient, but you could still buy the item if you’d rather do that. And some things, like Mawdrey, has at least 1 account bound item in the process you’ll have to craft.
