I’m a returning player looking to get back into gw after some time of inactivity. I already have a ranger and I like it but with this 80 booster I’m looking for something different. I’ve been toying with the rev, necro, and mesmer but am not sure on what I want to run with. I’ve been seeing a lot of people talking about how heavily the necro got nerfed while others say it’s fine so I’m kinda scared to jump on that and mesmer felt like it had a lot going on. Rev felt good but I don’t know if it has any viability in end game pve and pvp. I mainly am planning on doing pve for awhile and occasionally jumping into wvw. Any suggestions on what might be a good fit?

Necro got nerfed but it’s still a good choice especially for PVE and WvW. Instanced PVP maybe not, but hey whatever you think is fun. I personally love necro and am still loving it. Rev and necro would probably be my first choices out of the list you provided. Hopefully this helps. See you in game

The boost can be used on a bunch of characters as a trial… and then applied to one character permanently. So, if you’ve got the time then try all the classes that interest you.

All the classes are viable PvE for a multitude of builds. I can’t comment with any confident authority on PvP and WvW, but it does seem like all are functional in those modes… optimal/balanced is always in hot debate, and in the eye of the beholder.

Speaking of Beholders, my advice is to avoid the class forums until you’re comfortable with the class you do choose. I don’t feel they’re a good place to be when you’re just starting to explore a class… later on they can be worthwhile.

As far as anyone claiming their classes were nerfed-beyond-recognition by this patch, please keep in mind that it hasn’t been out long enough for anyone to have adjusted their play style to make any such claims with 100% certainty… even more reason to avoid the class-specific forums for a little while.

Ultimately I suggest just choosing the one that you had the most fun with once you’ve used the trial on all the classes you’re considering. PvE/PvP/WvW will all fall into place so long as you’re enjoying playing the class.

Thanks both of you, both of your answers are actually really helpful because I had a ton of fun with Necro but just allowed myself to be scared off by the profession forums. I got stuck on people saying how good mesmer is but when I played it in the trial it felt like it had too much going on with illusions and felt extremely squishy. Gonna play with them some more though like you suggested.
