After 18 days, which class should I get to 80 first?
I’m having the same problem.
I started with an Engineer and hated it by the time I got it to 33. I felt like I was just doing the same thing over and over and that it had very little versatility even though I thought that’s what the class was going to be about. I’m totally burnt on it, so I’m letting it sit until maybe it changes in the future. Just sick of dropping turrets.
So now I’m fighting myself between a Ranger & a Thief. I like both. I feel like I’ve tried every class and I can’t decide what I like the most to stick with. This is making it very difficult for me to write a backstory for RP (Tarnished Coast – RPer).
Hopefully I’ll get my head out of the sand soon and pick something!
I’m in the same boat. I’ve got a warrior, a mesmer, a thief, a ranger and a guardian. The thief and mesmer I love in pvp, but really do not enjoy in pve. The ranger I love in pve but hate in pvp. The guardian is fun, but not the kind of class I’m used to playing in MMOs (tanky support) and really can’t see myself sticking with it. The warrior I find to be strong in both pve and pvp but something about the class just bores me after 20 minutes of play. Dunno why. I tried elementalist and necro and really hated both by level 10. I think I’ll probably end up deleting my warrior and rolling an engineer, even though supposedly it’s a class that needs a lot of work.
Despite all this I still absolutely love the game. I just wish I could settle on one for good.
I tried all the proffesions out and decided to stick with ranger. I had fun with a few others but ranger seems to fit my play style pretty good right now.
Thief for me…it took a looooong time. Its never been so hard to pick a class.
I knew thief was the class for me the moment I played it, it also helped I tried all the rest during beta.
Yay, I’m not the only one. The ones I’ve liked most so far are Thief and Mesmer but all of my characters are still low level (because I’ve been deleting quite a lot of them to try new ones) so nothing is written in stone yet..
Another thing I’m having problems with is choosing my race. I’ve been playing mostly with human males but I’m starting to be pretty fed up with the model (the all look and sound just the same) so I’ve recently started playing with a couple of male sylvaris. Charrs look pretty neat but the male voice is so shallow that I can’t imagine myself playing with one that isn’t meelee. I’m not a fan of neither the male Norn nor Asura models. The first looks just way too clichéd and the former is too small for my liking. So human, sylvari or possibly charr..

agreed i levelled a ranger to 80 but have become lost with the what should i do now? syndrome. just made a guardian and wish i had taken that to 80 first find it alot more entertaining to play.
Yeah,I have all classes from 12 to 20,but just don’t seem to click with any of them.
Have all the weapon skills unlocked, but I’m not satisfied with the skills that are on offer with any one weapon set or even weapon swap.
The class I thought I would dislike playing the most (thief) and chose to try out last, has been the real surprise for me ,as it’s become my most played so far.
Still my thief is really too squishy for my liking, since I’ve chosen dual pistols and shortbow and gone the DPS route in traits and utilities. Not a problem if I party up with her,but finding people who want to party up for anything but CM,is more frustrating to me than LFG in GW1.
My own fault for making her a one trick pony and party dependant tho. =/
Same here. Ten character slots, one human of each profession, one Sylvari and one Asura. Not one over level 20 and most have been rerolled due to my CC obsession. Most of my guildmates have stuck with one character or switched between two and many have reached level 80 and started to arrange guild outings to higher level content.
I am definitely going to concentrate on my Guardian Ranger Elementalist Warrior as of today.
Definitely.
today i got my mesmer to lvl 25. she got wicked cool gear an i think i can stick with her.
since BW1 i played mesmer right now im like lvl 150 XD no really im lvl 80 mesmer and i love that proffesion so much, tho i made a fem warrior just for the lulz but i kinda want lvl her up as well

I have every class but a warrior currently. My main is a female human elementalist, although the thief was fun to play since Assassin was my main in the first Guild Wars. I prefer the human styles for armor, but don’t want every character I have to be human. I have a couple humans, a couple Asura, a Sylvari, a Norn and I decided to make a Charr for the story (even though I’m not very fond of them).
I had 26 different characters in the first game… so I know what it’s like to enjoy making and playing on different characters. o_o

After playing a sylvari up to 50, and a charr up to 30, both male, I can say that if voice acting is an issue, you do not want to play sylvari male. Just when you get into the character his voice becomes boring and sometimes irritable, whereas the charr actor starts to build up emotion and is not half as irritating. The male human is good for voice acting.
As for asura, you should really try one. While they may be small, their personal storyline is very fun, and the voice acting is pretty good too.
Same problem every MMORPG again xD i like’m all. I’m currently leveling a necro asura
Oh my, 118 hours and still being confused is unfortunate
I, on the other hand, was fortunately lucky enough to pick my first, second and third favorite classes in beta. I’m currently playing a guardian, level 80, and I really like guardian in all places, all acts in this game. It is like specially designed for me
Also, I have a currently level 8 engineer as my second character. After this reaches like, level 40-50, I’ll start a mesmer as my third because mesmer is a class that I’ve seen never before in any other games.
It was between Mesmer and Guardian for me, because I mained Mesmer in GW1 so I felt attached to the class, but the only reason I mained Mesmer back then was because there was no holy warrior class (W/Mo does NOT count!)
In everything else I play I always pick the holy warrior/paladin/knight/yougettheidea and once I had tried them both out on GW2 I was pretty quick to realize that I would be sticking to my favourite archetype once again
I’ll be bringing my adorably creepy Asura necro to lvl 80 first (and do all the world completion stuff on this character), then taking a break to do some playing on my Sylvari ranger and, suprisingly, my Charr guardian (I normally hate heavily armored melee classes, but this one feels quite fun).
I also have a human ele that I still don’t feel like playing. Maybe I’ll switch it for a mesmer. Was fun but challenging back in beta.
I started a Guardian, got to level 41, got owned big time in AC and decided to try something else. Guardian IS my usual mmo ‘type’ of class but thought I’d jump ship.
Went w/ a Ranger, who is level 14 now. Love the pets…..
Hard to say wich I like better.
My Ranger is the highest at level 46 (only play part time)…but I’m also leveling a Mesmer, Thief, Warrior and Guardian whose levels are from 12-25. I like all those classes just as well. Plus I still need a Necro, Engineer and Ele to round out the stable.
My ranger is the explorer and main harvester. The others are just for those days when I feel like doing something different.

After 18 days of play, and 118 hours total, i still have no idea which class i want to get to 80 first. I’ve literally tried them all multiple times, an love them all for different reasons.

When I was your age, I could outrun a centaur…until I took an arrow to the knee
Went with a ranger AFTER I leveled an engineer to 30.
Something about the engineer didn’t feel right, I felt that there was a TOTAL lack of direction and focus.
It went from super fun to…a bit tedious and wierd as* skills :|
Maybe it’s just me.
I have a NecroMancer at 33 for my first character…and while I do admit there are a few things I really don’t like, such as how non useful minions are (except for Bone Minions), I like how I can pull out some good AOE damage with Wells and Marks. My surviveability as a Necro has been pretty good so I think i am still going to get it to 80, no matter how tiresome it can become. But really…I do hope they fix the minions…that was the prime reason why I chose Necromancers in the first place.
Bear in mind that each class has so many possible builds, it will take you a while to explore them. This is not yer standard “Thiz bild pwns” MMO. Alice proves my point.
Despite the fact that the Engineer is apparently broken, I’m having little trouble surviving, or little trouble killing. Bomb kit; grenade kit. I started off with turrets a lot. After my first dungeon, where the bosses kept one shotting them, I experimented with some of the other skills; now I hardly use them.
If you want an instant fix & a perfect build from the get-go, there’s a good chance you’ll really struggle to settle on a class. Different combo’s of skills work differently in different scenarios. To build up that flexibility, you’re going to need a decent armoury of slot skills, which means a lot of skills challenges, which means a lot of play time. That’s not forgetting the effects of traits, and you’re going to need to get past 40 to open up two major traits in a line. All I can say is – don’t give up on a class too quickly!
My biggest problem is that I’m an altoholic by nature. It’s not that I can’t get on with a class. It’s that there aren’t enough available hours to investigate them all properly. Truly, this game is heaven & hell….
I started with lvling my main asura mesmer to 80, made my 7 chars already tho, got a lvl 11 bookah thief which I found too plain and simple to play, and now working on maxing my lvl 17 asura engineer right now.
Bookah Protector – Asura Guardian | Trapped Spirit – Asura Necromancer
In GW1, I was Mesmer. Loved it. I love hexing, cursing, slowing down, status effects, DoT.
Only thing that looked similar was Necro but that profession is entirely broken atm so there is no way I can play that seriously in PvE. Ele is my second choice but FRAGILE scares me. They are much too fragile. I do like the look of the entire Water Magic line though.
I am also in the same boat – to the point that I am thinking of dropping GW2 as its just not that much fun anymore. I love all teh aspects of GW2 and I think its revolutionary, but its not enough to keep me interested. And it may not be GW2 fault, I might be sick of MMO’s and video games in general, been playing them for over 30 years now.
As much as I love the game, the whole ‘you can do anything you want’ theme is too directionless for me, I guess im not much of a sandbox gamer. Except that I lvoe the TES series and played each one of those over 500 hours each. So I hope that they change the classes, or mechanics, or something, because I want to play GW2, and I want to love GW2, but right now I am jsut bored silly with every class.
on top of that, the more I play GW2, the more it feels like the entire game is broken to me and no single aspect of the game plays like it was designed to be played. Every class has something about it broken, and every mechanic of the game feels pointless.
I think its just me though.
funny story here -
I decided to login today even though i didnt really feel like it, and when I zoned in i was in the middle of a DE with 3 champion wolves. I assist in killing the wolves, only to have a champion Centaur boss spawn. We kill that, I grab the skill point, then a giant pair of hands spawn, and another champion boss mob. Little did I know that we arent supposed to kill the hands (better rewards I think) but we do anyways, and finish the DE. There was tons of dodging, avoiding aggro, CC, pew pewing, and it was an absolute blast!
I then realize why i was getting bored with the game and not connecting with the classes very well:
I was trying to play the game like a solo RPG. For me, this game needs to be played with a group of people to fully realize the potential of this game.
I am so thankful to Anet for putting out a game that breaks the mold, forges new territory in MMO gaming, and gives me something to play besides Skyrim ;p
Back on my way to 80! (I gained 2 levels from the DE chain events alone in like an hour, 56-58)
(edited by Notsure.7028)
I went Thief at first and then at 20 after dying so much and seeing the same bland rotation, even though the skills look really nice visual wise, I got really bored.
I went ranger and enjoyed it, but decided on a guardian and have stuck to my guns and am closing in on level 60 now. Now that I see how easy it is to level through exploration, crafting and dungeons I’ve decided to definitely get another character to 80 sooner than later. Maybe the ranger or an elementalist this time.
Try not to stress too hard about it. Stick to your guns on what you like, and then just make another.
I plan on having 1 of every class (already got the characters made and slots bought) eventually. Whether or not they all make it to 80 is another story, but I have invested in GW2 for the long haul.
And the great thing is: I can take a break, and not have to worry about a sub!
