Hey guys, I currently have a level 80 ranger, but recently I’ve been wanting to play an alternate character just for fun. I’m torn between the thief, necromancer, guardian, and engineer. I like the mobility and stealth of the thief, but I don’t want to play an over played class (even though the ranger is the second most played atm) I also like the look of medium armor. I like the necro’s skills and survivability, but I’m not a fan of the green animations and not to fond of light armor either but it’s alright. I like the guardian because of it’s semi tankiness and skills. Like the heavy armor kinda, basically only cultural and nightmare. I don’t like how the guardian is almost useless in most wvw scenarios. I haven’t played the engineer much, I think it would be something different, but I’m not a fan of the limited weapon choices. I’m also looking for a class with nice aesthetics and is good PvE and WvW. Any suggestions to help make this a little easier? Thanks

As an engineer only player I can tell you that while you can only have 3 kinds of weapons the several toolkits you can use more then make up for it.

You have the flamethrower kit, elixir gun kit, granade kit, bomb kit. Each one with their own unique set of abilities. It’s a very adaptable profession and with lot’s of different viable styles.

I play a Necro and love it. I’d recommend them as an alternate character.

Trolls are like stray cats.
Feed them and they multiply.
Please do not feed them.

Guardians are far from useless in WvW. If that is the one thing holding you back, I would recommend you try it (full disclosure: my main is a guardian, obviously I’m biased as I love the class).

Success in WvW comes from realizing that you can’t just run up to the enemy and smack it—you need to pick your fights and have an exit strategy. A thief might have a better exit strategy than a guardian, but they still need it (and you can take damage while stealthed). Supporting your allies may have few direct rewards, but winning battles (read: WvW DEs) is reward enough for me… The small pile of badges I walk away with doesn’t hurt either.
