Alt-a-Holic has it down to two...
not for personal experience. my boyfriend use to play as guardian and i think he can solo almost everything in pve i use a ranger and i soloed orr and cursed shore, but pay attention to people dropping aggro on you just for safe run…

Guardian is easier to play solo as long as you’re not in a situation where you need to engage at range. Engineer is a much better ranged option.
I haven’t 80’d a Guardian to know the ins and outs of how it plays in Orr (have an 80 Engie but only 55 Guardian), but there’s no question that it’s going to be easier [solo] once I do get there in most situations.

Wait Wait…Your Boyfriend? We all know woman who play MMO’s are just a Myth….Thanks for your comments though “bro” ( wink )
Actually, players believing that ‘women who play MMO’s is a myth’ is completely antiquated thinking.. evolve with the times, bro!
On topic, guardian will be the more solid choice for Orr and wife aggro :p
Ahh, the wonders of the internet, where someone always takes sarcasm so seriously.
Go Guardian. Better survivability, better damage, cool blue glowyness. Epic.
Don’t Guards have a problem in Big events getting points for “Tagging stuff” since the ranged options are limited? I have no 80 though, and my Exp in WvW was limited as with out traits I suck there, so not 100% sure how it all works….
Staff is a solid tagging option. auto attack is quick and covers a nice area.
I find that guardian is easier to play well than engi.
I have a level 80 guardian and a level 51 Engineer. Absolutely guardian if you are talking about soloing everything. Tagging disadvantage in event only happens in the case that there are a lot of people killing everything too quickly, which is exactly the opposite of soloing. I never stay long or repeat any of those zergs, even so, I still can tag pretty well with GS #2 and #5 if you act fast enough.
lvl 80 guard aaaaand.. lvl 12 engi. so can’t comment on engi. but he’s definitely very fun and i can safely say, even at lvl 12, he’s better at ranged. though with that said, Guard is not useless at ranged. just not the best (far from it). extremely effective and efficient at farming Orr though. solo or in groups. solo just go nuts. you have plenty of mitigation, and conditional removal and ways for close to permanent swiftness and teleportaions to safely travel from event to event. in groups? enough PBAoE skills to tag mobs and get gold. GS (#1 #2 for tagging, #3 for closing distance, #5 for pulling in mobs), hammer (#1 and #2, #3 to get a ranged hit in a straight line) and especially staff #1 are all great choices. staff is a huge plus at orr farming. #3 for swiftness, can also use to ensure hits on mobs if you know their pathing / spawning. #1 alone will help you take care of most tagging. just cirle strafe around mob. #2 is useful as well if you’re catching up to a mob or event and need to sneak in a slightly more ranged hit.
in terms of survivability, as mentioned above for traversing solo, with the right build, you can easily take on 5 – 6 or even more mobs in full MF gear. if you choose to don MF. at the same time, depending on server and time, there’ll be so many others that you just need to focus on tagging if you’re into zerg running.
and don’t forget to party up. it does help. : )))

I only have a lvl 40 guardian, so I won’t comment on that profession.
But I’ve extensively played engineer, and never had any problems with any content. I’ve been able to farm Orr without complications, and the rifle is amazing for exploration. Easily accessible permanent swiftness also helps greatly.
I’ve got an 80 engineer. Don’t have much problems in Orr. I’m just a good player, I won’t have problems with any class. I just like engineer most

Lvl 80 Engineer, and I solo most of the time. It is a rare thing when I die, even in Orr. I have learned tactics to avoid areas that may be a bit much for one lone engi… but to be honest that comes from learning the map more so than learning your profession.
I will always love the engineer’s versatility. Have kits will travel!

I have both an engineer (main) and guardian at 80 (exotics included, save some trinkets).
I picked the guardian for my alt specifically because the gameplay seemed completely different from the engineer (one is range focused, the other melee ; one has a lot of active gameplay with kits, the other offer a more paced experience with lots of passive bonuses). That turned out to be quite accurate.
I play a power/rifle/grenade/kits sustained dps engineer and a hammer/staff/altruistic healing tanky guardian. Both are quite capable of taking on whatever the game throws at them, in Orr and elsewhere.
Performance-wise (probably due to build choices) I kill stuff faster with the engineer, and kite enemies a lot (plenty of tools to do so). With the guardian I am able to jump in the fray, stay there and live to tell the tale.
So you will have to ask yourself whether you would rather :
* fight mostly from a distance OR mostly up close ?
* have a lot different skills to react to situation (kits) OR pick the right time to unleash your powerful boons (virtues, shouts, consecration) ?
* blow things up (grenades, bombs), jump around wildly (jump shot, acid leap, rocket boots) OR stay put and laugh as you soak up damage and spread buffs around ?
For solo play my preferred choice is the engineer, I love the variety and whacky style of the profession.
PS : of course you can also build a tanky engineer and a glass cannon guardian (I think) but IMHO this would be suboptimal for PvE at least.
