Altoholic former WoW player: help me choose a profession
buy $35 dollars worth of gems and get three slots. or you could level one character up and get gold to buy the gems for slots. Your choice. Then you will be able to try all the character classes and not have to erase.
as far a what class you will like. The mechanics are so different in this game it is a bit hard to draw a comparison. I played mage and priest in WoW. Im playing a ranger here.
Ok, here is some sage advice I read a while back (can’t credit the original author).
Start with all the classes you think you might at all be interested in, and then do a coin flip to eliminate half. Look at the remaining classes, and flip the coin again.
At some point you may begin to realize that you’re “rooting” for one specific class, and that you really don’t want that one to be eliminated. That is the class you should start with.
If that never happens, then just whittle your way down until you’re left with one standing. You’ll have fun with that class no matter what because each class can do a little bit of everything in GW2.

I had a friend who was in a similar predicament, having come from WoW playing a shaman.
I told him that, since the weapons are what define the skills, test the weapons of each profession. Yes, it will take a while, but it will be worth it to find what you vibe with most. Off the bat, I would suggest starting with a Guardian.

I’m not sure if you tried it yet, but you can actually test your professions as a level 80 character with access to all your skills and weapons (minus racial skills). When your character is done with the starting instance, press H and click the last tab on the left. Enter the mists and you’ll be taken to the PvP lobby where you will be leveled to 80 while in there, with access to all your skills, and you can obtain weapons for free from the weaponsmith NPC. This area is essentially a training ground for PvP players, but it can help you test drive a bunch of your skills and traits.
When you first arrive in the mists, go across the courtyard and up the stairs on the other side to use the portal that takes you to the main lobby. In the hall of memories area, you will find NPCs who will give you equipment for free, so feel free to use those to test drive your main skills.
I hope this helps!

This is something that is very helpful. I ran into the same issue myself and found that watching some youtube videos helped me out. This game is very different from WoW, so as everyone is saying, it is hard to compare. I found that looking at the weapon skills (mainly) and utility skills for each class really helped me decide what to play as.

I didn’t play WoW and I haven’t tried the GW2 Warrior yet, but I’m having tons of fun with my Guardian. What’s funny is that’s one of the professions I was least excited about before playing the game. My guardian basically abuses the block/aegis mechanic so she never takes damage, and the guardian-specific Virtues are really helpful in big fights with lots of players. If you’re looking for a fun melee class that can tank to some extent (although there are no dedicated tanks in this game, it sound like that’s what you’re looking for) then you should definitely give Guardian a shot.
Azman – Asura Necromancer, Kemena – Human Guardian
Emracool – Sylvari Elementalist, Lyra Lightbender – Sylvari Mesmer
Warrior and guardian can probably both appeal to you if you liked the plate classes in WoW.
Note that warriors are a perfectly viable ranged class, too, if you’re worried about surviving in melee range. That said, circle strafing helps a lot with staying alive, and you can build a pretty tough warrior, too (put trait points in the defense line, use a mace or a hammer for the weakness debuff). You won’t be able to just straight up tank stuff, but you can take a bit more of a beating than a glass cannon build.
if you follow the ingame economy the gem market will rise and fall like stocks, it may be a bit easier to buy the gems with ingame currency at a fall in price
wow was the first and best mmo
i rolled a warrior because i enjoy melee. turns out i use guns / bows a lot more than the melee weapons. /shrug
the fact you just said wow was the first mmo really speaks about how much you know…
Another thing to keep in mind is to switch your weapons and skills out often. After I unlocked all the weapon skills on my Guardian, I stuck with the GS almost exclusively. Then as that started to get a little stale, I started using Scepter/Shield as backup. Now I’m doing Scepter/Focus and Sword/Shield.
And with each weapon swap, I try to configure different slot skills to see how drastically I can change my fighting style, even though I’m only level 20ish right now.
Just a little something to keep things with your main class fresh as you work your way to 80.
