Q:

Hello, I’m not exactly new to this game but my previous account got hacked and I fancied playing again. Anyway I decided to roll an engineer, after a few hours of playing I wanted to browse the gem store and decided to buy the magitech armour. Now, I assumed how they work is you would just apply the skin to whatever you’re wearing, or have the option to display it. As a lowbie there are no shoulder items if I’m aware.

Now, it seems these are end-game centric items, as it seems once you apply it to an item. That’s it. Now, am I stuck with the stuff being lowbie items or is there a way to reverse the process so I can just keep applying that stuff? If not that’s an extremely stupid gameplay decision and will probably make me quit again as that’s money wasted basically.

You can transmute the skin to higher and higher level armor. Normal transmutation stones are pretty abundant (from map completion and daily achievements and black lion chests) and will work for any armor that’s not level 80. Fine transmutation crystals are a bit tougher to get naturally; you can always buy them from the gem shop. You only need them for level 80 armor though.

Sorry, but that’s ridiculous. You shouldn’t have to spend anymore once you’ve bought cosmetic stuff. What annoyed me was there was nothing on the page to saying others. It should be a simple process of displaying stuff. Guess I’ll be petitioning to get my gems refunded.

What’s extremely stupid is not reading item descriptions and screen-locking warnings on a thing before you use it, then complaining it’s working exactly as it told you it would. The items you bought tell you exactly what they do, and when you use the skin they, once again, tell you exactly what is going to happen.

Anything else was your erroneous assumption. Don’t make those.

Your option now is transmutation. You can use the extremely cheap Transmutation Crystals for gear bellow lvl 80, and you save your gear and use Transmutation Stones to transfer their looks to level 80 gear. You can do this as much as you want. Or you can quit. That’s your call.

Either ways, it’s your fault.

All skins work that way, even standard items where you transfer only the skin. Until lvl 80 you only need normal transmutation stones. they are VERY easy to get. Try completing the city maps and you already have a bunch that should last for quite a while. Fine crystals need a bit of luck, but you can get them without gems too. So no, you are not screwed. You neither loose your skins, nor do you absolutely need to buy gems.

It’s NOT extremely cheap though. Those crystals are 125 gems for 5, and to get continually use the skins while upgrading me gear I’ll be out of gems by the time I’m level 30-40. Also none of the item descriptions/warnings allude I just assumed they meant it was soulbound to the character and I didn’t really mind that. Just the very deceptive description. A helpful disclaimer saying it’s more suited to level 80 players would’ve been awesome and tell me exactly what I wanted too know.

I also can’t seriously believe people are defending arenanet for this though. It’s downright scummy, even Blizzard allowed those cosmetic items to be account-wide. I already paid £25 for this game, plus £15 for the gems. If anything it’s NCSoft showing their puppet strings.

When they are on lowbie items, they count as that level. So you just need stones. Once you want them on level 80 gear, -then- you need crystals. You get 3 stones per city completion and occasionally more from zone completion. Unless you transmute every single time you swap an item out, even when you’re only using it for a level or two, you just won’t run out of stones as long as you’re exploring. Not a dime or copper needed pre-80.

You can keep the neat looking set on low armor too, and swap to it when RPing or whatever you are doing that needs the looks but not the stats.

Ah, I do see one problem, the poster you quoted swapped terms. Stones are lower, Crystals are 80. Don’t buy Crystals.

Donari, I appreciate the response but I don’t want to feel forced to do map completions. I want to do that stuff in my own time, when I feel like. I bought this set so I can look like my profession up to 80, and now I’ll have to be forced to grind for that privilege. Is there anything wrong with that statement to you?

Infact that seems the antithesis of GW2’s design.

One thing you can do to get the T stones is run an alt thru one of the cities, Hoelbrak say, and get 3 stones. You can run it thru the others cities if you want for more stones or delete and repeat.

Running thru a city only takes a few minutes once you learn it.

I find it funny that Light armor wearers get level 8 helms and shoulders whereas everyone else must wait till level 15 (or 10 if you buy from merchants).

This is pretty much what I do. I can get the Grove done in about 5 minutes a run.

Also, regarding grind, the philosophy is that you don’t have to grind for stats. You’re not forced into attending a several-hour-long raid at a fixed time every week no matter what RL things come up. Exotics are easy to get- you don’t have to fight other players over a rare drop, and dungeon tokens mean you get the gear you’re looking for, guaranteed. Crafted armor is relatively cheap and on the same level as dungeon exotics, and you can also get exotics with karma or Badges of Honor (which are being handed out like candy for achievement points). You grab your exotics at 80 and that’s all you need for the rest of the game- hell, even in Fractals, AR isn’t needed that badly if you’re good enough at dodging.

The dev team said several times before the release of GW2 that the grind in the game is linked to cosmetics- legendaries, and now also rare backpieces like the Fractal Capacitor. Cosmetics don’t hamper your ability to play the game and perform just as well as any other player- sure they’re nice, but you don’t NEED them to play and there’s no pressing need to get them like top tier stat gear in other games. If you like the look, you work towards them- it’s something you want to do. If you don’t feel like grinding for the skin, you’re not punished for it.

As for my background, I’ve always tricked out my alts soon after I make them. At level 5, I gave my sylvari ele a full set of T2. My level 23 thief has several T2 pieces and Midnight Fire dye. My guardian’s had a bunch of level 80 stuff, some of it pretty expensive, ever since level 20. To preserve all of their looks, I kept a character slot open and made temp alts to run the Grove again and again for transmutation stones. If it got tiring, I could say “eh” and just let them wear whatever was on hand until the next ten levels came around, or even let them keep wearing gear 20 levels outdated. In either case, I never suffered for it like I would have in other games.

tl;dr want and need are two separate concepts.

As for the gem store armor, I bought the Krytan set for my thief when it was just started. I used the numerous T stones I got to keep it updated. Anytime I ran low I just ran a city or two on an alt. T stones are ez to get. At this point I have about 50 of the yellow ones.

Falunel,

I expect that response for someone who didn’t want to spend gems on exotic stuff. I spent gems, i.e real money if you’re a new player. As I’ve said countless times.. I don’t want to grind for something I’ve paid money for, on-top of the game itself. I want to do map completions for the fun of it, not doing them over and over again for transmute stones.

Hell, I decide to throw arenanet an extra $20 and they repay me by kicking me in the testicles.

If you don’t want to grind for Transmutation Stones, then don’t put it onto gear you’ll replace. It’s that simple.

You know you can get the Yellow transmutation stones via completing maps (especially city maps) right?

Also, we’re not defending ANet. It’s clearly written on how the item works. If you did not read it, it’s your fault. ANet and Blizzard are 2 different companies – they have different game designs.

I understand you are frustrated, but reality-wise, no one is to blame but you.

And to answer your topic title: With your attitude of not reading – yes, you are screwed.

Like said by others here, the yellow stones are for lvl 1-79 and are fairly easy to get. This game is free to play after it’s purchase and has some mechanics that slightly favour spending real money. But on the upside you are saving yourself 10-15 euros a month on a subscription fee. If you play this game a bit cleverly you can get everything you want without spending a single bit of money. GW2 has one of the best cash stores in a non-sub MMO where nothing in there makes you ‘better’ than anyone else. Better yet, the gem/gold conversion allows you to just play and when you saved up some gold you get yourself the item from the gemstore.

You’ve just made an honest mistake here and there’s not much to be done about it right now other than to listen to people’s advice here. Everyone makes mistakes, that’s life.

OP. So far everyone on here has been doing their best to answer your original question- Am I Screwed?

Overwhelmingly the answer was no, and many people took the time to explain things that you can do in game in order to keep using your fancy new skin. Clearly though this is just another rant thread. You are not interested in solutions, only to complain. Next time feel free to indicate that in you original post, it would have saved these people’s time.

Many thanks,

I just wanted to throw this out here, you also get the basic transmutation stones from daily achievements (easy to get if you just play the game normally; no grinding or going out of your way required) and sometimes from personal story missions. I rarely ever bothered with map completion until my wife started dragging me along while she worked on her legendary, and I still had way more stones than I had anything to do with. Seriously I could toss you about a hundred of them if they weren’t account bound; the things appear like candy on Halloween.

The OP is upset with ANet for how “skins” function.

They have always functioned this way and he was just not aware of this prior to his impulse buy and use of the purchased skin. Everyone here has described solutions to maintain the skin and yet the OP continues to want to blame everyone but himself for this mistake of ignorance.

He can open a ticket to try and get his money back (good luck with that) and there is really nothing more to discuss here.

Without any grind at all I have never been wanting for transmutation stones…ever. Right now I have more than I will ever use. On my main character I bought the armor skin I wanted when I was about level 40. Always had plenty of stones anytime I wanted to change armor. By the time I got to 80 I had about 10 transmutation crystals just by playing the game. I don’t see what the big deal is.

Also, comparing Anet’s armor skin policy to WoW’s is just silly. Sure, you may end up paying a few dollars to be able to re-use your skin, but only if you want to. WoW forces you to pay what, $15 a month whether you want to re-use your skins or not. I’ll take Anet’s policy every single time.

You will probably be doing map completions just to level anyway.

I have about 150 transmute stones sitting in my bank, accumulated over my last 4 characters. They come easily.
