Hey guys, i’m coming back to GW2 after a 1 year break and i’m thinking about making an Asura Guardian.

The thing is, is this class overplayed ? I hate when everytime i look around i only see guardians, it looses something, i don’t know.

I also considered making an Asura Elementalist or a Human Thief.

My main goal this time is to WvW, i think is this subject the Elementalist are probably the most efficient because of the AOE, since i never played any of the 3 classes on WvW i really don’t know wich one is the best (i can’t imagine playing WvW as a melee to be fun, so Thief might not be a good option).

Anyway just wanted some enlightment if Guardians are really that much overplayed (at 80) and if they are what classes are key for WvW and are constantly on demand.

Thank you.

If you want a class that’s all around good for everything and not too overplayed I would try ele.

From what I’ve seen the most common professions are (highest-lowest):
Warrior-Guardian-Mesmer-Ranger-Elementalist-Thief-Necromancer-Engineer

You will see a fair amount of Guardians, but no doubt there are way more Warriors around. They are a good support class, I’ve tried leveling one and personally found it kind of boring after playing a Warrior/Mesmer. In WvW every profession has its uses so if thats what you want to do just pick whichever interests you the most. Of all the ranged/caster professions Mesmers is probably the strongest. I hear WvW Elementalists and Thieves have good dps, but are complete glass cannons. Guardians have great survival skills and good dps. Not as high as a specialized melee user, but more well rounded than most. In my opinion more suited for supporting the group rather than roaming/dueling.

In PvE Necros and Rangers are shunned due to their lack of group utility. Not really sure what the opinion is on Engineers since I rarely ever see any. Elementalists+Guardians are always welcome in parties (limited numbers). 1-2 of each can be a big help with the Eles conjured weapons and the Guardian support for tough fights. Thieves have SF which can be helpful in certain instances, but a Mesmer would probably be better.

The reason Warrior is overplayed it because its an easy class. People see others using some cheap greatsword build and think “uhhh. half-decent DPS. Must steal build.”, when in reality, greatsword warrior is slugish. After Hundred-Blades is on cooldown, they’re no use to me any more.

Guardian is overplayed, yet half the community apparently hate Guardians, from what I can figure out. Apparently it is socially unacceptable to use Staff on a guardian, because for some reason people dislike mass AOE boons. Its also popular among Commanders to be Guardians, because they are sort of defensively bulky and can spread boons quite easily, and have a very high Swiftness uptime in WvW.

and the above point about Rangers and Necromancers being shunned because of their lack of “group utility” is complete and utter rubbish. Rangers can provide AOE healing, AOE boons and a variety of combo fields, some of which being the rarer ones, such as an Ice field, as well as a handful of the ever-popular Fire fields for AOE might stacking. (Ranger have more fire fields then Elementalist.)

“Necromancers have no group utility”. Because obviously, AOE Protection, huge AOE healing, permanent 25 stacks of Vulnerability and not dying in 1 hit like every other berserker warrior in the game is a lack of group utility.

At the end of the day, people can talk about what professions do it for them, but all you can do is try out and experiment to figure out what works for you. For example, I think Guardian is the hardest profession to play in the game, yet I have no issues playing Engineer, which is widely reguarded as a complicated profession, however a lot of other people find Guardian easy to play, so all you can do really is try to find something that fits you.

Perhaps I worded it wrong, what I’m saying is that they simply aren’t as desirable as the others. Organized groups are always looking for (Warriors/Guardians/Mesmers/Elementalists) first to cover whatever their group needs. Each of them has something more concrete to provide and are typically considered first. Thats not to say Rangers/Necros are bad and as you stated above they do have good traits. While AoE fields and perma Vulnerability are nice, theres never a time when you need to take either profession to provide it. Other classes can provide many of the same utilities as well as others that they cannot. I think it also has to due with the negative stigma alot of players have about them.

Very nice diagram, thank you Miroe for that. And is that true there will be a new race available?

Warrior-Guardian-Mesmer-Ranger-Elementalist-Thief-Necromancer-Engineer

This is pretty much what I feel from personal observation. At least in PvE.

In PvP its more like:

Thief-Engineer-Warrior-Mesmer-Guardian-Necromancer-Elementalist-Ranger

My advice is for PvP pick what you are best and most comfortable with regardless of others. For PvE, pick what you enjoy most minus Ranger and Necro. Rangers are meh, and Necros don’t bring any useful combo fields or useful group utilities.

New races and classes are probably on the way but I have no idea what they will be like.

The most likely thing is Tengu as a playable race, but I wouldn’t expect it any time soon.

New classes are highly unlikely, at least within the next 2+ years. Anet have said they will sooner work on adding new weapons and utility skills to existing classes before making a whole new class.

Actually this isn’t true. The autoattack chain isn’t exactly the best ever, but you shouldn’t really have to use it that often. Bladetrail, GS #5 within close range (hits a bit more than half of what an Eviscarate does), and of course Whirlwind Attack. Whirlwind is not only an evasion but deals an immense amount of damage when used against an object or into a wall. Assuming you’re using either 65003 or 66002 + full berserker + proper utils and nourishment, you’ll be critting over 90% of the time and therefore nearly every attack of yours will stack might.

Greatsword warriors are by no means sluggish.
