So, I have been playing GW2 for a week and still can’t decide the profession. I like playstyles of ranger, monk and warrior in first Guild Wars, but they were quite diffrent there. Ranger had great control/cc/condition options and warrior was the main killer in PvP.
So far I tried all the classes and I’m concerned, Warrior seems to be lacking, he’s more support now and ranger felt like “just press 2 and evade”, lot’s of people also say taht warrior is noob, faceroll class and I like to play something more challenging.
Engineer was fun, but it’s not quite my playstyle, rifle isn’t what I expected and mostly he just throwes grenades.
What class should I choose then? I’m mostly PvP player but want to do the highend PvE too. If I just had the time to max a couple of characters…

Warrior is support now?
Hm, all those DPS types must not have heard the news, then^^

Seriously though, when it comes to picking a class, don’t go with what other people tell you. GW2 has no trinity, so most classes can fill most roles to a certain degree, and most content is playable by every kind of player or group.

If you want challenging, Mesmer sounds about right for you. Caster class that can be played long-range, mid-range and melee, with power builds, condi builds, phantasms… It’s a pretty fun to play class, if rather squishy until you get your traits. Also useful in jumping puzzles since you can teleport yourself back up if you fall^, but that’s mostly a side effect^^

Elementalist might also be a good choice. Doesn’t have a melee weapon (yet, but that might change with the expansion), but daggers force them into melee range anyway, so you’ll need to know your skills and when to dodge. Staff eles are good for WvW, dagger/dagger is popular in PvP… There isn’t really any content where people would shun an elementalist.

PSA: The amount of small felines serves as an indicator for just how angry I am at something.

Yea, Mesmer was fun but it’s way too squishy for my tastes.

For PvP: Every character has the ability to access ~90% of PvP gear and trait-wise regardless of their level. Keep trying out builds and classes until you fall in love with one is the best advice I can give.

If Mesmer is too squishy for your taste, you’ll likely not enjoy Thief much either, they’re both very high burst damage with good map-control (Portal in Mesmers case since they’re slow as snails ^^) To some extend Necromancer will likely also not make the cut since they have the poorest escape ability ever and natural bulk (Death Shroud, good HP) won’t save you for long. Everything else, just give it a go. If you want some build-inspiration: http://metabattle.com/wiki/MetaBattle_Wiki can be rather helpful.

For PvE currently Guardian, Warrior, Elementalist (2x) and Thief is the most common set-up, though Mesmers are more popular in actual record runs if a Guardian (or other classes) can be missed.) Warriors and Elementalists are the group-damage buffers (Banners, Fury, Might, Frostbows etc) whilst Guardian and Thief are more for the support/utility, whilst doing good/great damage still, PvE is all about damage. If you enjoy PvP you’ll be drowning in Tomes of Knowledge, which grant 1 level each, before you know it, making it quite easy to change your mind later on.

I’d have to agree on Mesmer, or also Elementalist.
Both are caster scholars. So granted they can be squishy. But with the right gear they can do damage and not die in two hits.

i can see the OPs difficulty if he is constantly comparing GW1 to GW2 professions. The games’ combat systems are quite different so my suggestion is, “don’t do that”.

Warrior is only “noob faceroll” if you want to play lazy and not learn to utilize the profession fully.

I know that the community consensus seems to be the Warrior has been nerfed badly, but hey – if this is your first venture into the game you won’t notice any of that!

I just levelled a warrior to 80 and I can tell you they still hit pretty darn hard, and are a lot more dodge-reliant than I would have thought. Standing around waiting to get hit just won’t cut it. With not many heal/support skills, the key to staying alive is either kill everything before it kills you, or dodge/evade the big hits before they land.

Elementalist is very rewarding high level, though I think it’s one of the toughest (or challenging) professions at the lower levels. Especially below 30 when you haven’t mastered game mechanics or have access to traits to bolster your build.

But – once you do reach level 30+ and you manage to wrap your head around the 20 odd skills each weapon set gives you… well, now – then the fun really begins.

I’d say, go for the Warrior and Elementalist. You sound as if you like the
Warrior play style and Ele is amazingly versatile, with massive dps potential at the higher levels.

Yeah, but I liked GW so much xD
BTW. utilizating warrior fully – what do you mean? Just knockdown/fear/stung timing? Or is there something else?

I think I will end up with warrior or guardian(yay, monk+warrior). Does guardian differ much from warrior? He is more defensive and that’s all, more support class or how the things look in this game?

I’ve played a Warrior since Beta and have never used FEAR ME and very little Hammer, so I’d say there’s plenty more to it…..but then I’ve never been a “meta” player either. I run GS/ Axe-Axe or Axe-Warhorn. I’ve also run dual Swords / Longbow condi warrior.

Don’t ever let someone tell you how you SHOULD play a profession. Take suggestions, use what’s good from what they offer but short of Dungeon speed runs, there is no “right” way to play a profession (or the game in general). Sure there are more efficient ways or potentially “better” ways to do something, but if you aren’t having fun, you need to question WHY you are playing.

Guardian has a lot more group healing and protection skills, making him tankier than the warrior and allows you the option of a more defensive play style in addition to the more obvious ‘go forth and do damage’ take on things. As a Guardian in direct comparison to Warrior, you might not hit as hard, but your dps is nothing to sneeze at.

I’ve levelled both now, but I prefer my Guard, hands-down, because he just suits my natural play style better- which is defensive. That’s why figuring out your play style and what you like is so important. Seek out all the advice you think you need, but don’t take it as gospel and, when all’s said and done… don’t forget to have fun! (ooh, that rhymes…)

This.

Nothing beats taking the time to figure out your play style and having fun in the process. You may discover you hate both and end up playing another prof altogether.

That being said I’ve started and deleted 3 Guardians so far (only prof beating that is Mesmer with 4). My current Guardian has been sitting in some level 20-something area for the past few weeks untouched. Just goes to show different strokes for different folks. My Warrior was the second toon I got to 80 after my Engi. Still having fun with him.
