Q:

I have been playing Gw2 since beta (previously Gw1). Gw2 has gone so far into the open world in PvE that it has just about taken all of the adventure out of the game. So many people playing PvE are now it for the commercial side,, farming, zerging. I have come across so many PvE who are so bored. Everyone is doing the same as everyone else. I look at the map screen longingly at Crystal Desert and other areas that are not opened yet craving a bit of something different rather than the huge zergs that just run around doing what everyone else is doing. Bring back a bit more instanced PvE for people who just want to solo – maybe some heroes!!! so we can craft armour and weapons for them,, have a rule where if you are in a party each player can only bring a certain number of heroes. I am so bored with Gw2 and I am not the only one.

A:

I’ve deleted what I’ve been trying to say for 10 minutes now, not sure how to word it.
Personally I’ve been bored with this game for 3 or so years now. Why do I keep playing? Perhaps its the amount of money I’ve spent on it, maybe it is because of the time I’ve spent with it? Who knows, I just finished crafting bolt, something I was so excited to have finally as my third legendary, the second I crafted it I couldn’t care less about it. It might as well not have existed to me.

Why is this? For starters I’m impatient and I will use my credit card to get gold to help speed up the process. Why? Because I don’t feel like opening chests following dozens of grey default model characters around some crappy desert with weird plant monsters to earn some money for hours with no end in sight.

It’s honestly weird. That is the “meta” of this game, being impatient and wanting things when you want them, not when you deserve them.

People want content, people want prestige. People hate working for things they want, they hate spending time doing things. Aren’t those the ‘precursors’ of the first?
What is prestige? Something you’re PROUD of for ACCOMPLISHING?
What is content? Something you spend TIME to DO?
Not in guild wars 2. prestige is non-existent, because the prestige of legendary weapons is flooded with CC-warriors such as myself. Nearly anything is bought or nerfed to be easy to get.
Content is sped through and ignored to the best of the players ability.
In some games, players spend years to get something their proud of, and in the end feel the prestige of having. Now imagine if you were time gated 365days to get a legendary weapon. What an uproar there would be! Wow I can’t even imagine what it’d look like. Because I tell you now, the toxicity I saw about people needing to wait 14 days or what have you for a few things in HoT’s list of legendary weapons. OH and trust me, even I was furious when I had to wait 19 days for charged quartz to finish bolt, instantly I regretted now saving my gold and buying zap.

All in all, it is a shared responsibility between the majority of the community(maybe 70%?) and the developers. We give them mixed messages constantly of what they should be doing, and they get confused of how they should move forward. We wanted content so they gave us HoT, we cried for nerfs so they did. They gave us raids for hard content, we cry to make it harder.

Meanwhile there are those who take their time and enjoy the game, those who have played for 2 years or so now, and have just gotten their first level 80, those who just got their legendary after 3 years of farming.
To those players, I truly envy you, keep enjoying the game for what it is, and not for what you want.

Well, I managed to finish writing this, it is a lot less “shame on you” towards the community as I originally had it. I hope it doesn’t come across as that, especially as I am one to blame. If this topic could actually go somewhere that’d be awesome, honestly!

Up until a few days ago I could always find something to do. But now I’m extremely bored. Now I’m to the point where I just randomly redo decorations in my guild halls for a little excitement.

I’ve also noticed a lot less people in my main guild online lately. Guild missions used to have easily 15 people or more each Tuesday and last couple weeks we haven’t been able to do bounties because we haven’t had enough people.

Hope something is coming soon.

It’s at the point now where I’d be excited to see another gemstore outfit or weapon set. cringe

Same reason I assume we all stopped playing GW1. Normal to get bored after a while.

HoT really adds to the fun though I have to say.

This game has lots of fun factor for me to go and I’m sure ANET is working on a new expansion as I type this.

What I find needlessly boring though, are legendaries. It’s really not fun for me knowing the most sought after items in the game, farm for months required, are simply Ascended gear with pretty skins.

Not hijacking your topic here. Saying it because though HoT is keeping me around (and easily) the legendary situation here is an EXTREME boring factor.

After my Nevermore I’ll rather eat chalk than farm another skin for months.

Legendaries need damage kick above anything else. But, HoT far outweighs this boring factor for now.

I don’t even understand why people ask questions like this. Is “anyone” else bored. Let’s pretend there are 300,000 people playing this game and 5% of them are bored. That means yes, someone else is bored, and it amounts to about 15,000. If 10% are bored it’s 30,000 people. The odds of you being the only one who feels this way is tiny. It’s very very small. But the question also implies something.

I could ask is anyone else not bored and I’d find people not bored. It’s totally meaningless. All that matters if that YOU are bored or YOU are not bored. Why this great need to try to make something out of it?

You want soloable content? I know for a fact people solo some fractals and dungeons? How many have you soloed? How many have you tried to solo?

You don’t need heroes to solo instances in this game. You just have to play well.

I look at the map screen longingly at Crystal Desert and other areas that are not opened yet craving a bit of something different rather than the huge zergs that just run around doing what everyone else is doing.

I will address the reasons you have mentioned for your boredom: repetitiveness & not wanting to compete for money and loot.

I agree that PvE currently has a bit of content drought, because the “Current events” keep dedicated players only active for a few days, until the next step (they bounties were designed a bit differently, because you had to do the hunts every days for some time – but still, should be finished by even the casual player).
But what about going into the PvP league if you are a pure PvE player. You might enjoy it, even if you only try to get to Emerald. You could also meet more active players in WvW, due to the server linking. Find a small sized roaming group & don’t zerg. You will have fun for some time.

Over all, I think Anet knows that HoT content has not slowed down an ageing game enough and Raids are nice – but have not reached the majority of players.
Perhaps you should just make adjustments to your in-game schedule and take longer periods “off-game-time” to make you come back with motivation again.

I get what you mean, dude. Guild Wars 2 is going through a bit of a dry season now as the devs put (what I believe to be) their full focus on Season 3.

And I think that’s a good thing.

Nonethless, they’ve been busy inserting a couple of new events recently. Also, it’s just as well they’ve given us a bit of a breather. I can now take this time to round up more Hard Wood Logs so I can craft The Bifrost. Whee!

While GW2 is different from other MMOs, I find the common thread between them is that they require secondary objectives to add replay value to the content they offer. In WoW, it was the gear treadmill. We don’t have a gear treadmill here, but legendary items serve a similar purpose. They give players a goal to work toward that requires a significant amount of time and participation in game content.

In my opinion, GW2 needs to put more thought into providing these types of objectives, but instead they seem to be moving away from that in favor of providing more content. More content is great! Don’t get me wrong. But if we don’t have these secondary objectives to go along with it, we’ll likely find ourselves asking “What’s next?” within weeks of the next release.

Legendaries are great, too. I’m working toward my first one now, and so far it’s done a great job of giving me a reason to log in. But I can’t imagine these are attractive to everyone. I suppose others go for easier collections and achievements? But ultimately I think GW2 needs to come up with more and different incentives that provide the same sort of motivation to log in and play.

Ah, it’s good you’ve managed to find something suitable for you. For me, GW2 gives me a greater sense of freedom – in both the expansive open world maps and the freedom of movement (I can jump AND swim).

But then again, maybe it’s because I’m a bit of a loner, so I can still enjoy even without a guild. :/

There are plenty of secondary objectives in this game. Achievements/Collections give you some. For some the PvP season is a secondary objective (and getting the legendary backpack). The fractal backpack is another objective. Hell collectors and achievement hunters have plenty to do.

Then there’s of course legendaries, skin collecting, dungeon master, getting to level 100 in Fractals. There’s a ton of stuff in this game to work for. But there’s very little you have to work for.

As an example, there’s a collection for getting one of every type of ascended armor/weapons. That takes a long time.

There’s no lack of stuff to work for in this game. But since you don’t have to work for any of it, people think it’s not there.

I bet you most people who bought HoT don’t have every elite specialization weapon for example.

If you’re bored you could try switching up your build or trying out a new class. Even just unslotting something on your main that you realise you rely too heavily on (eg. warrior stances/the defence line) and adjusting your play style to compensate or slotting neglected utilities and making a build around them can make your character feel very different to play. Get out of your comfort zone like.

The list of things I still have to do in this game is quite huge. Unlock all 9 elite specs + weapons, masteries, map completion and legendaries, ascended gear and having fun with builds, learn how to actually not die as a thief, dungeon and weapon skin collecting and prettifying everyone, making gold, diving into pvp more, setting foot in raids/fractals, scavenger hunts like dry top badges etc, actually just dry top in general, and loads more that I’m sure I’ve forgotten right now. Oh finishing HoT as a sylvari and getting all the story achievements.
My problem is that instead of doing any of that I just jump in to wvw and play there instead.

And yes after a couple of hours pursuing whatever goal happens to have taken my fancy that day I can be a bit bored, but then there’s no time limit on them and I can just go do something else instead.

The funny thing about a forum is that you’re talking to everyone. It’s a conversation with many people. I don’t know that half the posts I reply to will necessarily help the OP, but that doesn’t mean other people won’t derive value from those posts.

Some people agree with what I said and some people don’t. I’m okay with that.

The OP posed this as a question, but it’s not a question with anything but an obvious answer. It should have never been posed as a question.

The question part of the forum, in my opinion, is to ask for information about the game. Not whether anyone else is getting bored. Even if only 1000 people played a game, some of them would be bored at any given point.

Returning to the original thread, the OP’s question was: “anyone else getting bored”. Answer has been given: “yes, others are getting bored.” (I note that the OP offered the answer to their own question in their last line: “I am so bored with Gw2 and I am not the only one.”)

Some consider it useful to give context to that answer by asking, "does it mean anything if “anyone else is bored?” And the answer to that is, “no, of course not.” There has never been (and never will be) a game that can keep everyone entertained for years and years; someone is always going to be bored.

A more helpful question might be: “for those who got bored after playing for a long time, what have you done to keep the game fresh for you?”

I’m with Vayne. Posting this as a question thread implies that there is a right answer. What’s the OP going to do, select the, “Yes, I’m bored, too” post he likes best?

This thread is just a back-handed attempt to garner agreement that Anet is not providing new stuff to do fast enough. I would respect the OP more if he had just chimed in on one of the existing threads about lack of new content to say he’s bored and thinks ANet needs to get the lead out.

And I’m no more bored now than I was when HoT first released.

Not sure why people have to announce they’re bored in the first place. It’s not Guild Wars 2’s fault. Relieving boredom is a subjective thing, you find it boring – go play something that isn’t. Someone who finds WoW boring should stop playing that and go somewhere else.

I find a lot of people who are so-called bored of the game are the ones that rush everything – making instant 80s, join rush dungeons, have to do new achievements on the day they are released. That’s their own fault rather than ArenaNets. They can only come up with so much content.

And for that reason, I don’t rush anything. I spend many hours per day in the game still, mostly for RP with my Piken friends and guild mates. There’s still so much to do, albeit might be not to everyone’s game style. But that doesn’t make the game boring, just makes those people who are bored, have an appetite for something else.

I snickered when I read that last line. The question, given where it is asked, is: anyone else getting bored with Guild Wars 2?

The point of a game is to entertain its customers. If they’re no longer entertained with the game, it most definitely is Guild War 2’s fault.

And yes, more than a few of us have gone to play something else. The traffic shown on these forums have dropped for a good reason.

Bored? No. Disappointed? Very much so. HoT was an epic and harmful disaster. They’ve undone some of the shredding they did, but they’re not done yet. They still have massive changes to make for my liking.

But, no, not bored. I won’t even be close to bored until I finish going through all of the core storyline missions. There’s a LOT of material there that I would never have known about.

There are NO mixed messages when it comes to an MMORPG…..one message and one only, drive content out as quickly and professionally as possible! We’ve had so little one needs to wonder who the hell is steering this ship and why haven’t they cried out to upper management??
I am currently and have successfully run a 150 million dollar company and can say without a doubt, the CEO who hides behind closed doors is a failure. You want to keep your player base, start talking, start pushing interest back out there. No? too afraid to fail? You already have…..hang it up and make room for someone who really cares to grow the business.

Vini, Vidi, Vici, Viridis…I came, I saw, I conquered…I got a green??

Welcome to last year.

Being able to have another character follow me as a companion, even if it only AAs, would really cheer me up.

Sorta, yes.

I’ve been filling up achievements, actually getting close to finishing most of basic. Heck, I even caved and got the ascended gear achievement.

That’s pretty much it right now, just treating achievements with a checklist, doing one or two, logging off.

Least I got the steam summer sale atm

I certainly didnt mean it to be a troll. I still love Gw, I still log on almost everyday, its just getting shorter and shorter, just cant be bothered trying to find the Zerg or the Commanders tag. We all play for different reasons thats for sure. From a Gw2 customers perspective no one is talking about Gw2 in the gaming forums I use. People wonder if its still going. Really looking forward to any new expansion,,there are so many map areas to open up. Thanks for all replies.

But… work is boring.

You can work on things that aren’t work. You can work on your tan, but mostly that involves lying in the sun. Nice try though.

No, lets get something clear, I can enjoy things that are not work, even if they take up a sizable amount of my time and energy, but they are enjoyed, simply because, they are not in fact work. Like say reading a book.

Many people would not balk at reading a 1000 page book. However, we reading a Story Book vs reading an Instructional Manual, are so vastly different, that hardly anyone compares them, often because it is well known that the manual is tedium, while the story is excitement.

Which brings us back to MMO’s. The problem with MMO’s is that they have people that want to take this Story Book, and turn it into a Manual.

And that… is when it becomes “work” and why people get bored of it and leave.

Much like “getting a Tan” vs “Working on your Tan” truth is, the people who work on their tan, take it way too seriously and suck the fun out of being in the sun.

Again, just like some MMO players.

There are two kinds of gamers, salty, and extra salty
