If anyone has this card, i would like to know how well they can run Guild wars 2 or how loud it gets when using High graphics settings in-game. I Have been using it for awhile and have had alot of performance issues with it, I also have a good Cpu so i know its not that is not a problem. Could it be that i just got the bad card out of the bunch and go and replace it? Or is this card not as good as people said it was? Hopefully i can fix this problem soon, i have not been able to play any HOT becuase i cannot go to any of the zones without a huge fps drop and the sound of a blowdryer coming out of my tower, this has actually happened while i play in vanilla zones too.

Futuremark have an old DirectX 9.0c benchmark called 3DMark06 which is freely available. Try running that with different settings.

This should enable you to determine if your card is faulty.

Note, takes up to 3GB to download.

There is also a monitor program – plenty of alternatives – called HWiNFO64 which will allow you to monitor your graphics card’s temperature and fan speed via time-series graphs – freely available. Usable while running GW2. Very small program.

Make sure you are running the latest 16.1 AMD crimson beta driver and not drivers that came out with the card. If you are indeed using the 16.1 drivers and are having this problem, go back to the last Catalyst driver and try that. That card should eat up the game as much as it is allowed to by the game being very much cpu bound. If the problem continues, reseat the card in the pc physically i.e. take it out and put it back in again. After downloading the latest drivers use ddu to uninstall the old ones in safe mode prior to installing the new ones. You can after you run ddu and it has restarted then go through the pc and delete any amd folders (assuming you dont have an amd cpu….if you do best to skip this unless you are sure of what you are deleting) before installing the new ones.

If you have problems in other games then after doing the above you may have a faulty card.

I use an r9 290 Windforce and on max settings without supersampling the game runs great (60fps) solidly in vanilla zones (except lions arch etc where slight drops are common due to cpu limitations and thats on a 2500k @ 4.6ghz which is getting on a bit but has great single core performance) and I recently repasted the gpu and get to a max of 68 degrees. Before the repaste i would get to 73-75 with the stock paste. Which is acceptable and didnt create a massive hairdryer effect. If you are using the stock “blower” design cooler and single fan of the reference models then it will be loud and hotter than other aftermarket ones. I dont know why AMD persist with this cooler. Its terrible.
