Ascended Armor Question
It might not be with hardened leather prices.
I just did this exact thing about a week ago, I recommend collecting as much leather as you can to soften to blow when making everything. Everything else is dirt cheap.
Fort Aspenwood
Thank you both. I have been crafting a spool of silk weaving thread and a spool of thick Elonian cord every day and after three days have my first Ferratus Rabid Insignia. I see your point. My leather stock decreased very quickly. Currently I am on LW3S2 but may have to skip to LW3S4 to farm leather. When I am am able, I do LW in the morning, and a Boss Train and crafting in the evening hoping that a very rare ascended armor drops. So far I got an ascended staff from Tequatl that looks really cool.
Thank you for your help. I hate the thought of doing the story out of order but when my leather or gold runs out, I may have to. Either that or wait even longer for ascended armor. Ugh. LOL

If you have a teleport to friend stone, you can join with someone that is on one of the maps and use it to teleport to them. This way you won’t have to do the story.
To Ayrilana; Great idea! I thought I would never use the teleport to a friend stones that I have. Now I have a reason to use them. Thank you!
It is rarely cheaper these days to make an ascended with a cheap stat and reforge to a fancier one — you end up using the same materials. There are a couple of notable exceptions:
- Transmuting from core stats to HoT stats means you can avoid worrying about Jeweled patches or dowels. That doesn’t save on costs; it saves you time. (And if you have ‘extra’ fulgurite, you can make & sell jeweled patches or dowels to others.)
- If you’re just making 1-2 of an item and you know the recipes for stat A, but not stat B, you can sometimes save a few gold — you need a recipe for the relevant insignia|inscription and for the armor|weapon.
There’s another option for saving money: using the PvP or Fractal crafting recipes. The costs for making zerker stats is about the same (with market variations), but you pay identical costs for HoT stats — there’s no fulgurite needed, nor do you need premium mats like Maguuma Lilies. This probably won’t work for the OP; it might be helpful for others.
Basically this tactic of stat swapping was only a thing at the start of HoT when people didn’t have loads of airship oil, leyline sparks, and that auric basin thing. It’s also possible they don’t have karma for obsidian shards. Of course, it still applies if you don’t want to do HoT maps much, especially if you don’t like one or more of them. Otherwise, crafting them conventionally is more beneficial. Also, I’m of the opinion that dragging out the crafting a bit also allows for more of a chance that you may get an ascended piece to drop— not to be relied upon but there’s also that factor.
for there you have been and there you will long to return.

Great advice and also a confirmation that in my case, I am going in the right direction. I am not that good at HoT maps and haven’t put a lot of time into them yet except to search for Mastery Insights (I am working towards Ley Line Gliding). So far from doing the Boss Trains I’ve gotten Spire of the Sunless, Leftpaw’s Weapon Chest and Beigarth’s Breastplate (which I can’t use yet because my Warrior is only level 40). I am holding off on making the pieces until I have all the component in case I get lucky and get a piece of ascended armor. I am learning fractals from a fractals guild that meets twice a week. When I dare to visit PvP or WvW, I mainly just explore and run from enemy players. Unless I just decide to give other players an easy kill. In those cases, I fight but always die. LOL
For quickest impact, you should focus on weapons over armor, and trinkets before everything. You can get ascended trinkets and backpieces that can be set to whatever stat set you want from farming the LS3 areas.
Bearshaman; I got Spire of the Sunless and Leftpaw’s Weapon’s Chest which I may use to make a Berserker scepter since I like using it with a Warhorn. I will look into farming LS3 areas after I finish the story and repairing Caldbolg (just for fun). Thanks for the advice!
I’m making my first set of ascended armor. I am making Ferratus’ armor and then I will change it to Yassith’s. Is this still the cheapest and easiest way to craft ascended armor?
It doesn’t seem like anyone already said it, so: https://gw2efficiency.com/crafting/calculator
That will let you, with an API key, see the crafting cost for things including using your own materials, and how much it will cost to purchase more from the trading post, etc.
You can use that to compare the costs, by calculating the cost of the ascended in one page, and then another ascended and also the exotic insignia needed to transmute in the second.
For me, going direct to vipers was far less expensive than transmuting from anything else, though without the materials I already owned that balance would have been quite different.
The site also has an ascended listing widget where you can see the cost to craft the various types (from scratch) so you can find the inexpensive versions.
Also keep in mind that there’s a pretty simple recipe using the mystic forge to change the stats on ascended gear. So if you have stuff and wish it was a different stat set, you can do that!

SlippyCheeze: Great advice! I use GW2Efficiency.com, GW2Crafts.net and Dulfy.net all the time.
Bearshaman: That is what I am doing with the armor I am making since I don’t spend a lot of time in the HoT areas yet. Thank you for the link.
