Asura character design
Engineer as you mentioned is a sure bet.
Elementalist and Necromancer are also very fit, since it involves the study of the elements or the death.
Ranger for an asura that is focused to the botanic or biology seems like a good option.
Just remember that asura is focused in the search of knowledge in general, not only build stuff, it can be knowledge in magic, war strategies, mechanics, and so on, even one of the leaders of the Vigil is an Asura (Warmaster Efut) so even a warrior can be a good fit for an asura.
(and the other 8 elite specs maxed too)
I think any profession works if you just put a science spin on it.
Elementalist — rather than using science to make elementalist skills, use the ele powers to do science. There should be all sorts of interesting uses for being able to apply heat and cold at will, along with easy evacuation of gasses and creation of protective shielding against explosive mistakes
Engineer — a no brainer. Just have them lean more towards higher tech gizmos.
Guardian — like Warrior below only with force fields and blue burning fire
Thief — hardest one for me to think of the science version … how about a “corporate raider” who specializes in stealing the research of other krewes for his or her own krewe?
Mesmer — study of light; my asura mesmer focuses on applications of solid light fields.
Necromancer — biology! My asura necro studies ways and means of repurposing organic material into disposable golems (minions), as well as how to combine organic and inorganic material to enhance the utility of both (cyborgs are his dream)
Ranger — a field biologist/botanist, out to categorize the world’s flora and fauna, or perhaps discover new ones that could lead to a cutting edge paper and practical applications for everyday living
Revenant — Take any other profession’s science version and have all that chucked aside thanks to a lab mishap that opened the asura’s brain enough to let in the voices
Warrior — Could be a Peacekeeper who designs his or her own high tensile armor. Or as Belzebu says, could be a complete dimwit like Efut with her “I don’t understand what you’re talking about with your fancy widget, just open the gate so my unit can go beat things up.”
The profession is far from the complete description of a character, it’s just the toolset that character uses to approach problems.
Thanks for the input. It’s good to get other perspectives on this sort of thing. I have a hard time playing a character if the character doesn’t make thematic sense in my head.
Don’t forget to name your Asura properly. Their names usually have a double consonant and female names end with a vowel. https://wiki.guildwars2.com/wiki/Category:Asura Thats a list of the NPCs in game to give you an idea of what they should look like if you are going all in for a thematically ‘right’ character.
