A pair of simple questions from a new player:

1. How much time, in hours of playtime, does it normally take to level to 80?

Preventing the obligatory “don’t rush it, take your time, enjoy the game” response: I am not going to rush anything, just wondering about how long it normally takes to level a new char without extra help. I also appreciate that there are different leveling options which may vary in leveling efficiency considerably: just assume that I would be doing a bit of everything, in solo mode, from events to instances to WvWvW (assume half losses and half wins if that matters).

2. How much time, in hours of playtime, or in days if that’s more relevant (eg, if we are talking about something that can only be done once a day), does it normally take to gear up for WvWvW?

Again, I am not going to rush anything, I am just wondering what should I expect by playing normally.

Thanks a lot!

Cap is 80, not 90

I normally level at a rate of 1 level per hour, and my usual activities tend to be:

  • Killing stuff
  • Gathering
  • Events
  • A bit of crafting
  • Exploring

I don’t tend to rush, so it takes me about 80 – 85 hours to get to cap (usually a bit longer if I get sidetracked)

50-60 hours for lvl 80 (no event farming, no crafting)

If you don’t want to spend any money on armor 5-10 days (dungeon armor, depending on what one you want, some are harder to get than others)

If you want ascended rings/backbrace 5-20 days (depending on your luck)( need to grind this dungeon to get rings)

Ascended amulet (30 days)

Or just farm CoF, TA and buy exotic trinkets

OFC, this is just my experience, you can go faster or slower depending on your profession/how you play

I have leveled 2 characters to 80.

My first one (ranger) took me around 230 playing hours, I took my time, did a lot of map exploration and the like. Never did dungeons until after I hit 80.
Gearing this one up with exotics took no time since I had saved 15g, and bought what I needed off the TP. Of course, things were much cheaper back then (October)

My second one (guardian) took me around 70-80 playing hours. Again, no problem in gearing, because I had around 120 gold and had 4 crafting skills at 400 so I could craft what I wanted.

Lvl 80’s: Ranger; Guardian; Mesmer; Necromancer; Thief

Ascended amulet (30 days)

I would more say 20 days for that since you get 10 laurel for monthly

For an upper limit I’ve been playing my main since day 1 of the headstart weekend, over 100 hours on that one character (can’t remember exactly and can’t check now) and I’m level 61.

But I have managed to spend hours at a time doing things that earn no experience, which is almost impressive in this game. Things like repeatedly trying and failing jump puzzles (I have finished all the ones I’ve tried, eventually) and scrabbling around bits of the scenery I thought might be jump puzzles, or I just wanted to climb. (Yesterday for example I was trying to get up the topiary outside the castle in Divinities Reach.)

I hit 80 after 121 hours, and did no crafting. sold most of my collectibles at that point and was able to afford max armor. There were a few binge weekends in there but normally about 2-4 hours every other day.
