As the title of this post states, I am effectively bankrupt within the game. For reasons that are mostly due to my own fault, I have not a single gold to my name; my main has only 17 silver. I have modest stores of most common materials, but no rares. My main (A L80 guardian) has a set of magic-find gear, and a set that is not.

With this preamble laid out on the table, I would like to know: What are some ways I could make a sizable chunk of money? The most I have ever had on me at once is about 16g. Never more. I am not a lazy jerk that’s asking for a get-rich-quick scheme. I’m wondering, besides flipping the trading post, what a player with a lot of free time like myself could do to make money.

I’m not a fresh 80, mind; I know the usual ideas like ‘gather everything’ and ‘sell/salvage everything’. I’ve just sort of hit rock bottom, and I’d like some advice as to what I can do to make sure I don’t end up here again, as well as crawl my way out.

I’d suggest farming Orr/Frostgorge, but it’d take a bit to get to them without wasting money on the waypoints.

Southsun Cove is where you might want to go; you can take the ship from lion’s arch there for free. Are karka shells still selling well? Even if they’re not, you can get some orichalcum ore there (especially if you can sneak to the rich node) plus mithril, ancient wood, cypress.

This only works if you can afford the gathering tools though.

On the note of Orr/Frostgorge: Farm what? Most of the materials I seem to get either sell for vendor price, or drop infrequently and sell for less than 1s. (IE Potent blood)

Orr and frostgorge have lots of mobs that drop T6 materials.
and those vendor sales do add up quickly. 1.25s x 80 junk items = 1g
If you’re looking to get high income and are just farming (not in a dungeon), I recommend using mf gear. You don’t kill as well with it, but what you should statistically find more than makes up for that deficit.

No, only salvage white item with the cheapest salvage tools and sell blue, green to vendor.
Use master salvage kit only with rare or exotic with valuable runes and sell other exotic on tp.

Also if you have times,do some explorer mode dungeon (that you can handle) to get some silvers. Also the tokens will net you some armor and weapons that you can use.

Do daily achievement to get 5s and jug of karma and you can get karma armor pieces.

Have you sold the crafting mats you have collected over your course of leveling? I randomly empty out my bank of crafting gear and sell it to make some quick money.

one thing that could make a huge different is are you keeping your mats for specific crfting purposes? for e.g. going for a specific legendary or named exotic, etc? if not, if you sold all your mats like Rustypipes mentioned, you should be able to build a sizeable income.

dungeons is a good way to get gold. if you’re going for purely gold, you can run AC dungeons all 3 paths a day. and use omnomberry bars. they’re pricey but your runs should cover the cost. if not, you can opt for the cheaper raspberry peach bars. whcih also add MF and GF (gold find). if you don’t care about DR on the tokens, i’d assume you can even run AC multiple times a day. not sure if you hit DR on gold though. that being said you want to take out the sub-bonus-mini bosses as they drop decent coin in AC + the 26s you get for completing the path.

furthermore, if you don’t care for the dungeon armour or weapons, if you do high enough level dungeons (which also net you gold, though might take longer than the two mentioned above), you can exchange for rare items using the tokens. salvage them and sell the ectos as well. or if you’re sticking with AC, you can just exchange for the exotics and then salvage those as well.

a few more points:
though you probs know this already re: selling/salvaging..

  • sell all green/blue items you get. some like to save up greens and gamble with the mystic forge for a small chance at yellows. i personally don’t care to.
  • if you don’t need globs of ecto, sell your yellows as well! but monitor the prices of ectos, if you feel lucky, you can try to salvage and sell the ectos if you get ‘em. also, if there’s a sigil or rune that might sell for a handful, use a blacklion’s salvage kit – for a chance at ectos and you can then also sell the sigil/rune.
  • if you want to save up, deposit gold into the bank! and leave only like some silver on you for travel and repair costs if any. this way you won’t be as tempted or you can even set a goal for youself. for e.g. you can’t withdraw anything until you hit 50g or 80g or 100g.
  • keep running in MF gear outside of dungeons as you should be able to survive
  • when farming events (Orr, etc), try to group up! this ups your chance at loot drops

good luck!

This has been said before, but get your char in a party in Cursed Shore, run penintent campt and Shelter’s Gate a few times, sell the mats you get, you may actually get some rares or exotics, as well as a good amount of Heavy Moldy Sacks, which you can either sell for 2s a pop, or open and hope for rare mats like Vials of blood that sell for like 20-30s a piece.

I will sound nasty, but there is no “bankrupt” in this game, you just did not try hard enough, and did not invest time. This game has no hand-outs. Blood, sweat and tears baby.

Thanks to all the advice, I farmed for about three hours and got… 80s. With full magic find. Ah well. I’ll try again today and see what comes up.

WvW can be a good source of cash, especially if you’re on at a busy time. Yesterday I made 1 g in an hour just from events.

I want to second the comment about hitting AC. I started doing AC for tokens because I wanted the greatsword and staff for my guardian. By the time I had the approx 800 tokens, I also had a surprising chunk of gold.

Once you get used to a dungeon path, repair nearly ceases to become an issue, and the worst repair bills I’ve had for rough dungeon runs lately have been 5-6s.

Omnomberry bars pay for themselves if you use them in dungeons, the increased coin from a single boss pays for the bar and the rest is profit.

I would save farming Orr for times where you cannot commit the block of time to a dungeon run, otherwise, sit in LA and jump in whatever groups seem to be LFXMore and have fun with it.

Oh, and if you’re skill point rich and cash poor, you can dump 50 skill points on making a mystic forge weapon and sell that, it’s usually a decent return on investment if you have the skill points lying around doing nothing.

Thanks to the slew of tips I’ve received here, I tried running some dungeons instead of farming! On my first run of the fractals in a long time (L4), I got… a charged lodestone. And 4g as a result.

Yeeeeeeesh.

For an hour in a single fractal run, I made more gold than I had in ~4-5 hours of farming. So I’m going to be sticking to dungeons from now on for my gold needs. Thanks guys!

Fractals. You get quick gold in there.

Just salvage everything you get in the fractals besides masterwork items, sell those to a vendor. This should give you T5-T6 mats, ectos aswell as cores and loadstones during the fractal run. Sell all that on TP and profit.

No need to run it with MF gear even, you will get tons of stuff anyways.
