Hi All,

I’m new to GW2, and after trying out a few classes, I find that I like the Guardian the best. My Guardian is now up to level 22 or so.

I tried WvW for the first time yesterday and was a little lost. Some basic questions:
1) I think my stats get boosted to level 80. Do my armor and weapons, too?
2) Is leveling through WvW faster or slower than exploration and doing the storyline?
3) What are the rewards (besides XP) for doing WvW? I know that it provides bonuses for your server, but anything else?

Thanks!

Hi Jeety, below are some answers to your questions.

1) Negatory, your armor and weapons are the same as your pve ones. Expect to have trouble using them against hostile enemies who have better armor. In large engagements, try fighting people not lvl 80 (they have a green arrow beside the 80 number in the top centre icon when targeted) or using placed siege gear (doesn’t matter what level you are for these).

2) I would say you can level up at a decent rate in WvW, but I would guess (guess being the key word) that PvE would be faster.

3) Enemies drop loot in WvW, much like enemies in PvE, the gear is roughly leveled to your level, so you can use it. You also can get badges of honour tokens from enemies and through other means (ex. WvW jumping puzzles). That can be used to purchase leveled gear, unique gear, siege weapons, and a component for legendaries.

If you have any more questions, feel free to ask me here, via pm, or in game, WvW is very confusing when starting but also very enjoyable.

Cheers,
Berk

Upscaling is a very complicated issue. The short answer is that armor contributes to stats, and your stats are upscaled. So in a way, yes, your armor is upscaled.

However, when you look at stat balance over levels and how upscaling works, it becomes a lot more confusing. For brevity, I’ll just leave it at this:

If you are wearing top-of-the-line gear for your level and have all your trait points spent, you will be scaled roughly to the stat equivalent of an 80 with top-of-the-line level 80 gear with all trait points spent.

However:

  • Some stats are only available on high-end gear.
  • Some stats (magic find, critical damage %) don’t scale.
  • Maintaining top-end gear below the level cap is difficult because as soon as you level, it ceases to be top-end gear. 80s have an advantage in aiming for a fixed point instead of a moving target.
  • 80s tend to have more skills unlocked as well as more major/minor traits. Many of these have effects that cannot be offset by stats.
  • Food is scaled too.
  • If you aren’t wearing a piece of armor, there is nothing to scale up (back slot, accessories, rings, amulet, helm, and shoulders being the typical culprits)

Not exactly.
Rarity of items don’t scale.
lvl 25 top of the line equip would be green one, which would be upscaled to lvl80 green equip. Which is not top of the line for lvl 80.

I don’t remember exact numbers but low level equip gets you only one or two stats. The higher equip gives you 3 stats, and of course the missing one is not upscaled.

2) Is leveling through WvW faster or slower than exploration and doing the storyline?

This depends on whether your server and/or guild is completing lots of objectives, i.e. taking over supply camps, towers, keeps, etc, killing enemy supply Dolyaks, claiming Sentry Points (flags), so on and so forth.

Another easy way to gain exp is by run to and from Supply Camps, grabbing Supply and building Siege Weapons (that others place) or repairing Walls and Gates.

You also can get Karma and coin from WvW. I would say WvW is another way to get xp. Sometimes it seems to move quicker when leveling, but I have found that a combination of WvW and PvE is the best way to level.
