So I’m coming back from not playing GW2 for several months+ I recently came to terms with acknowledging that intense, rage inducing games like DayZ aren’t healthy for a guy who has heart problems and is already stressed out as is. So I’ve returned to a game that made me feel at ease, and peaceful with it all.

Thank you GW2 Developers for creating a game that I can enjoy, without the heart palpitations and wanting to throw my PC out my window…

But onto what I need help with, I need help with understanding the changes to skill builds, because when I last played, you had a max number of points to allocate into your traits if you wanted to call them that, and that was your build, this new way of building your character is slightly confusing, and the hero points are also kind of confusing as well, but I may be overthinking things as I usually do.

Are there any helpful catch up guides or can anyone simplify the changes to characters for me, thanks!

You don’t have pts anymore. You choose 3 trait lines from your 5 cores trait lines and then you can choose one adept, one master and one grandmaster trait for all 3 of those trait line (which are now renamed Core Specialisation).

And I am guessing that Skill Points are roughly the same, as I learn the skills by purchasing them with the points I have as I level?

This is mostly a result of an overhaul introduced in the June 23rd (2015) update. I direct you to the patch notes for further explanation:
http://wiki.guildwars2.com/wiki/Game_updates/2015-06-23#Update_-_June_23.2C_2015

(They’re very long patch notes. Scroll down to the section “The Build Tab” and start reading there, at least up until “Conditions Updates”. If you like, you can scroll down and check out how your favorite profession’s skills were affected.)

Skill points were divided in two.

Hero Points : You gain them by leveling up to 80. (Past 80 you don’t gain them anymore) or by doing hero challenge (aka skill challenge). You use them to unlock specialisation (aka trait line) and skills. You can unlock them in the training tab in the Hero panel.

Spirit Shards : You gain them dropping them from various source or by using a tome of knowledge (level up past 80 without using a tome of knowledge won’t give you a spirit shard). You can use them like the skills points for mystic forge recipe and buying stuff at Myani.

Basically, they divided between the two major role of skill points. Unlocking stuff on your character and doing Mystic Forge.

So Spirit Shards is more or less important for all things Mystic Forge related, like Legendary Weapon crafting, ect.?

Yes.

The new system is actually relatively simple once you get used to it. It is both more and less flexible. You get a specialization slot at levels 21, 45, and 71. Ultimately, you will have six traits in each, the three minors, plus your choice of one major trait at each tier (no more partial investment into lines or equipping a trait from a different tier). The skills for each trait line are learned in a specific order now, but no more completing events or paying gold to unlock them, just points. One nice thing is that you can get access to grandmaster traits MUCH sooner (as early as 21 if you have the points).
