Reading a lot of post.. i think that the best advice for that people is:

Don’t rush max level. GW2 Is about the journey, the exploration, discovering things.
Every time you go to a new area. Stay alert of World events. They are large, difficult and some are amazing.

My picture, started like any other attack… and end with an epic boss fight(and is not a dungeon).

If you come from almost any other MMO that isn’t GW1… remember that greens are better than blues..

It’s a pile of Elonian protection magic, mixed with a little monk training,
wrapped up in some crazy ritualist hoo-ha from Cantha.
A real grab bag of ‘you can’t hurt me. They’re called Guardians.

The best advice I can give to someone coming to GW2 from another MMO is, “WARNING: This game may not work like your other MMO.”

I can’t tell someone that GW2 is better, because it kind of depends on what you like. I can tell them why I think it’s better. But I do think that most MMOs are similar enough that the same skills and strategies carry over pretty simply, so some people (myself included) get a shock to the system have to learn something actually new.

Best advice for ex WoW players I have is.. please don’t muddle up the chat with your complaints. We know this isn’t WoW, it’s actually a big reason why we’re here

to edit: I played WoW for 5 years so it’s not just blindly hatin’ on WoW and I didn’t play GW1 so I’m certainly no fanboy here but for me this game is a hundred times better than any other MMO

1. Remember you actually need to dodge.
2. Remember to swap weapons where needed. ( usually 1 melee 1 ranged works quite well for most classes)
3. Remember that YOU need to heal YOU.
4. Remember that you need to defend yourslef. DPS skills are great but you cant dps when your dead. Defensive skills (especially ones that have an AOE effect) are a massive help.
5. This is an M M O. Plan on working/playing with others. If a mob dies you BOTH get loot/xp/etc.
6. Gather, Gather and Gather. When your inventory is looking full right click on the little gear icon in your inventory and “send all collectables to stash” They are now all in your bank.
7. Salvage, Salvage, Salvage. Then send the collectables to your stash.
8. IF you craft, DISCOVERIES are where the XP is at. “grinding” known recipes will net you VERY little.
9. Killing yellow mobs (nutral) can sometimes yield MASSIVE bonus XP. Pretty much just kill everything. Odds are it will drop something worthwhile.
10. If your dying a lot, try a different weapon/skill set.
11. Skill points are spent. You will get WAY more than enough (eventually) to unlock ALL of your skills.

12. We know this is not WoW. Thats why we are here playing and enjoying the game.

much appreciated! haha new to MMOs in general and i’ve heard this is a new experience for all, even MMO vets and it’s kinda working out in a nice way i feel.

great tips and glad to know i’m doing most of them already. this game IS about exploration and of course i love leveling up as much as everone does and seeing my XP and money rack up, but i’m in no rush at all. the game is so awesome. i like to stay at vistas and let them play through. i like listneing to the NPCs jabber on about nothing and everything. and who knows i’ve stumbled onto pretty fun events just cause i hung around 5 seconds longer.

I’d add:

  • When you hit 80, the game doesn’t change. If you don’t like the game up to level 80, there’s nothing really different after you hit 80. This also means that there is no need to rush to 80…it’s not going to unlock a new mode of play for you. Take your time and enjoy the game.
  • That said, there is a ton of stuff to do at 80…if you do enjoy the game itself. Look at the achievements, go and do the explorable (hard modes) of the dungeons and maybe earn some dungeon armor, consider crafting yourself a legendary weapon, go for 100% map completion, play WvW or sPvP if you’re interested in those, etc. Levelling alts and PvP are not the only things to do at 80.
  • You do not need to be 80 to play sPvP. You can jump straight into it as soon as you finish the tutorial, and will have the same stats, trait points, skills, armours and weapons available to use in sPvP as someone who has been playing for a long time. sPvP upgrades are just skins, not power upgrades, so you can absolutely jump straight in and not have “starter gear” count against you.
  • There is no PvP in the PvE areas – this is by design. If you prefer to level with the risk of being ganked, play in WvW (assuming that queues are not too long – it’s hard to get in there on many servers at the moment).
  • Hearts and storyline are not the only ways to level. On the right side of your screen will be (depending on where you are) multiple “quest log” like indicators:
    • Green is for your next story step.
    • Yellow is for a heart – a one-time-only quest that once it’s done you get emailed money in-game.
    • Orange is for a dynamic event – these repeat, morph/chain into follow on events, etc. The hearts are there to fill in the gaps between finding these, but these are meant to be the main content in a zone. Finishing these you get xp, karma and money depending on your contribution to the event.
  • Crafting gives 10 levels of experience to raise from 0-400 per craft. Again, this is by design – you can (if you have the mats) level from 2-80 completely from crafting.
  • Gathering gives good experience – equivalent to killing 3-4 mobs (if there’s no bonus for the mob)
  • Killing mobs that have been in the world for a while gives bonus xp depending on how long the mob has existed without being killed. This means repeatedly farming the same mobs rapidly results in very little gain/xp. Farming the same mob over and over is probably the worst possible way to gain experience/level.
  • In your inventory, there is a gear icon in the top right. If you click that, you can deposit collectable materials to your bank from anywhere in the world. These materials go to a special section of bank storage (the 9-squares icon in the bank window) that can store up to 250 of each collectable material – use this to help manage bag space!
  • You can get “invisible” bags that hide the items in them from the merchant sell list (but not from the Trading Post…so be careful there). They ALSO hide them from the “deposit all collectables” option. If you want to keep a mini pet with you (they just run around after you, don’t actually do anything useful other than keep you company), you can put it in an invisible bag so it’s not sent to the bank with your other collectables.
  • Take a little bit of time to read text occasionally. For example…every gravestone in the game has individualized text on it. Some are serious, some hilariously funny. NPCs have stories…try talking to them sometime – particularly if they’re somewhere odd. There’s a ton of little details that most people miss when they just run through the content with the normal “tick the boxes” mentality that MMOs have encouraged in the past. Sometimes doing those things will trigger hidden events, or provide clues to give access to locked areas (e.g. hinting that a specific emote might provide access), etc.
Despaired Ranger: Crafted The Dreamer, lost range, lost GS condi damage for synergy.
Pet AI awful. Sword root+Aussie latency unmanagable. Lost playstyle, lost legendary, given up.

Just wanna put my 2 copper here!
I have been playing WoW from the European Beta and continued playing for almost 5 years. Then, due to RL, i had very little game time and had to abandon WoW.
It would cost me more then i wanted to spend for the few hours per month i could play. Then later, i had more time and i started playing again. But in the time that i hadn’t played they changed the game drasticly and i was not having any fun at all! You just rushed to the lvl cap and that’s it!
So i quit again and never had the urge to go back.

Now i tried GW2 (after a lot off reading and checking out some live streams and YouTube clips) and i have to say: WAAAW!!
This game is so different from WoW, i can’t begin to explain how different!
The visual aspect is a welcome change from the start, you can just wander around and still have fun (DE, new area’s, unexpected quests), they have just packed so much into each corner off the world!
And then i wonder what people are saying that they don’t lvl quick enough to go to the next area. At this moment, i have a lvl 13 human ranger (i know, still very low and still very new to the game) but i still haven’t explored the start area completely and have barely touched the story.
So i would invite everybody to just ENJOY this game and keep in mind that lvl 80 is not the goal, but having fun is the way to go!

Just my thoughts!

I totally agree with you great post. Thumbs up !

You cannot play a dedicated tank, you cannot play a dedicated healer and while there IS aggro, it’s very different to any aggro you may be used to.
If you’re doing a dungeon and getting frustrated, DO NOT say “But if I was playing WoW I’d be able to…”
These are the main things that have annoyed me while playing with ex-WoW players; the constant comparisons and perceived differences, mostly from players trying to play a class in a way they’re used to from WoW but that simply doesn’t work in GW2.

Please note that due to restrictions placed on my account, I am only allowed 1 post per hour.
Therefore I may take some time replying to you.

Just three basic things imo:

  • Pay more attention to your environment then you are probably used to in WoW, because you can miss out on alot of amusing convos, well-hidden puzzles and even the entire next step of a quest chain if you are used to skimming npc text.
  • Enjoy the journey. WoW’s common rush-to-end-game-to-boost-ego mentality will make you sorely disappointed. If you can’t break out this is probably isn’t the game for you.

*PvP is skill based over gear based, so don’t get angry if you get floored and scream for a nerf. Learn to adjust to the combat mechanics of this game.

Best advice: delete from your brain the words: Holy Trinity, DPS, Tank, and Healer/Support.

Then you’ll be fine.

have fun exploring! I’ve levelled up far more in areas that were under my level because I love to check them out. if you’re having trouble in an area, try going to one that’s lower level or one you just haven’t seen yet. since the exp scales, it’s worth it!

help other people! there’s no kill stealing and you get exp for rezzing people. even if you never talk to anyone or form a party, you can still get lots of experience and karma for taking part in events with others.

and dodging is important—especially for bosses.

1) This is a mobile game. Nearly everything (note: I said NEARLY,) can be cast/swung/shot on the run. While there are times you can stand there and attack like crazy (either do to your strong gear, your super health pool, or you have some poor meat bag being spanked in front of you,) you should always be ready to dodge.
***1a)Circle Strafing is your friend. This technique is about running a circle around your preferred target, constantly being able to attack them, but yet remain outside of their attack capabilities. This is more effective in PvE, as the monster will always go the same direction. Human controlled characters can switch up on you, so make sure you’re ready to throw in a dodge or change directions yourself.

2)THERE IS NO KILL STEALING! Lemme say that again. THERE. IS. NO. KILL. STEALING!!!!! You see a mob you need to kill? Kill it! Someone else already spanked it? KILL IT ANYWAYS! You’ll still get the Experience and quest credit for killing it.

3)THERE IS NO LOOT-NINJAING! All looting, including crafting material gathering, is done on a CLIENT SIDE basis, not a server side. If you see something loot-able, it’s for you and you alone, though naturally, you can trade or sell it on the trading market, if you so desire.

4)This game rewards team play. See someone killed? If the mob is still agroing, kill it, then REVIVE the other player/npc. Every class can revive another character, whether in combat or out, WITH NO COOLDOWN. You even get some nice, tasty experience for helping out the poor sod.

5)Weapon skills are your primary form of killing something. Weapon skills are learned as you kill something. So don’t waste your time learning weapon skills on something that takes a while to kill, find weaker mobs and slaughter them. Also note, even though many weapons are shared among the professions, NO TWO PROFESSIONS USE WEAPONS IN THE SAME WAY.

6)While we’re on skills, no you don’t need to go to a trainer every x levels to learn new skills. You learn them yourself, wherever you are. Weapon skills are free, but you cannot change them without switching to another weapon all together. Your “Slot Skills”, by default, numbers 6 through 0, require the use of Skill Points you gain as you level, and as you complete certain challenges. You can learn these whenever you have a moment to stop and catch your breath. I wouldn’t recommend opening the Hero window to learn a new skill when you’re in the middle of an attacking horde.

7)Just because you’re 80 doesn’t mean you can go into a newbie zone and start causing Grief for other players. Why? You are DYNAMICALLY LEVELED DOWN based on the area you are in. So if you step into an area generally meant for people around level 4, you get zapped down to level 5. Sure, you’ll still have all your delicious gear, skills and traits, but you won’t just one-shot everything. This is actually a good thing, as it lets you experience other areas that you may have missed while not being COMPLETELY over-powered.

8)The reverse is also true. Don’t rush to 80 and go expected to dominate people in PvP. Why? Everyone is DYNAMICALLY LEVELED UP to 80 in “Structured PvP” or sPvP for short. And everyone gets gear a special set of gear they can use there. Sure, the starting gear is free and isn’t the greatest, but it lets one start on somewhat more equal footing.

9)World vs. World vs. World, or WvWvW or WvW is somewhat different than sPvP. While everyone is still level 80, they can gain experience to level up some more if they haven’t capped yet, but they retain whatever gear they walked in with. You’ll still be much more powerful here than they would, but you won’t get the satisfaction of ganking low-level characters. Tsk tsk… going and getting your hopes up like that.

…Okay, that’s it for me at the moment. I need to eat breakfast… then log into the game myself. Time for some more fun.

Oh for the love of little green tomatoes…
