Hi everyone, I’m new to the game and was wondering which class would suit me best if I want to be a hard hitting back liner. I would think longbow ranger, but wouldn’t the pet mechanic mean that you do less damage with your skills? Pets also just seem like a hassle and I can’t figure out how to move their bar around in the ui. I was thinking a warrior might be good, but I don’t know much about the game and figured they were more close up specialized. So any advice would be appreciated

Well.

Every class in this game, except Thief, has at least one weapon that hits at 1200 unit range.

For exceptions, Ranger can hit to 1500 with longbow. And Thiefs can’t hit anything past 900 units.

Not all classes game play are ranged tough. Mesmers and engies, despite shotting at 1200 prefer to fight mid-range due to their skills.

If memory servers me right, current best long range DPS class against single targets is ranger and against multiple targets is revenant.

So does that dps include the pet? If so how hard is the pet to manage, and how would it stack up to like a bow/gun warrior?

Pets are easy to manage. Warrior is not in the best place right now. You could get it to work but it’s range is not quite the same. your best bet is to try them out and see what you like the most. That’s the best option. But personally I would go with ranger. If I were you.

I am not sure if you mean PvP or World verses World. Because in pvp you can not really control if you want to fight in ranged or close up. It is the enemies approach and how you move that decide this.

If you mean in wvw then you can play in another way, and be more ranged, but again most classes have gap closers so you keeping distance do not mean your enemie does.

As been said already rangers have both ranged weapons and melee. All classes except ele and engy have two sets of weapons to use, so you can be both as ranger.

Also if it is a ranged class you want, then ele, necro and mesmers are all good ranged classes in pvp and wvw. All are able to fight in melee as well depending on what weapon they choose (necro and messmer can be both at the same time, ele have to choose either ranged or melee)
