I am pretty new to MMOs so I need some help.

What is the best class for a beginner player? Something that isn’t over the top complicated. I have played around with some of the classes and right now I am playing a ranger. I tried mesmer and necro but I wasn’t too good at those. I died a lot, mostly because I am new haha.

Ranger is a good class for a beginner. I would also suggest a Warrior or a Guardian. They both do well. What ever class you take make sure you pickup some crafting. For Ranger I suggest Huntsman and leather worker. Warrior and Guard I’d go Armor-smith and weapon smith. That way you can keep your weapons and armor up with your level.

Oh gosh, crafting? I didn’t even think to do that. I will have to look up some guides.
Thanks for the reply!

Warrior and guardian don’t seem to be as complicated… kill stuff and buff allies. Ranger is good too since you have a built in partner to distract enemies. Thief is iffy, seems like Thief and engineer are in a gray area between combat and finesse… In any case, ranged weapons are your friend, killing stuff before it can get to you is good and a lot of mobs have ranged attacks too which puts melee at a disadvantage. Learn crafting and make armor/weapons/jewelry to help increase your stats, for surviving fights a higher Vitality keeps you on your feet longer and Toughness buffs your armor.

Less in-your-face classes like mesmer, elementalist and necromancer are probably best for more experienced players, with these you have to balance attack power with weaker armor and less hit points than combat classes.

I get tons of weapon drops I’d recommend pairing the appropriate armor crafting skill (tailor, leather, smith) with jeweler to further buff your stats, seems like there’s more of a selection of weapon drops to choose from than rings and amulets.

If doityerself weapons are a concern just make an alt with two weapon crafting skills like huntsman and weaponsmith would supply anything a ranger, thief, or warrior needs.

Yea, I think I will save classes like the mesmer and necro for when I actually know what the heck I am doing. But I will definitely pick up crafting.

It’s my personal preference… say you have a Ranger, if you use leathercrafting to make armor you either have to choose hunting to make bows, horns and stuff or weaponsmithing to make swords, daggers etc. In either case unless you’re also playing a warrior, thief or engineer there will be some weapon types you can craft but can’t use. And by the time you can equip that +10 power bow you’ve also found a +9 vitality bow and a +11 condition dagger so you have to choose what to use and sometimes end up just throwing away the weapons you make.

But jewelry drops seem to be more rare so if you have a +6 vitality ring and a +5 power ring you’ll probably keep them until you can craft something better or buy better stuff from a karma merchant.

Well that sort of stinks that you have to choose between the two weapon crafting. I do have a ranger and I prefer bows to swords, so I guess I will pick hunting.

I think I will do jewelry too, I haven’t found one ring yet.

You can switch back and forth between crafting skills and not lose progress for a fee. Granted, if you do it too much I’m sure it’ll get quite expensive, but it’s still there as an option.

Oliin: Good to know, though if it cost too much I probably won’t be doing much of that. I can always have one of my other characters be a weapon smith if I feel like I need to do so.

I’d have to say that elementalist, guardian and mesmer are the more advanced classes. Necro and thief as well when it comes to staying alive and such.

I’d say warrior or ranger is the best beginner class.

Even though you can switch back and forth between crafting skills once you get them leveled up a bit it will start to cost you to switch.

You only really need 2-4 weapons, but you need 6 pieces of armor and 5 pieces of jewelry. I you dont like switching craft professions back and forth, then IMO leatherworking and jewelcrafting are good to have for a ranger. Both of those crafts wont use materials from the other crafting profession. But if you were to take say huntsman and leatherworking you will see that you need more materials. Not stuff like ore, wood, or leather…but you will need more of the ingredients like weak blood, tiny claws, and bone fragments. Those are the hard to get ingredients, since ore/wood/leather you will get lots of if you hit nodes and salvage any gear you dont use.

This is actually really important for a starting player. Those fine crafting materials take a while to acquire and can constitute a significant obstacle to leveling two disciplines that rely on them. With Jeweler and Leatherworker, there’s no overlap in materials, so leveling one won’t inhibit the other.

Chef works mostly the same way (except in a few rare circumstances), in that the ingredients needed to level it, aren’t widely used by other disciplines. The problem there is that a new player won’t have traveled as much as a seasoned player, so won’t have access to the same variety of materials to craft with. Also, leveling that discipline is a real storage hog. To do it effectively, you need a lot of free storage, either in bags or bank space.

Leatherworker + Jeweler is probably the best way to go.
