Best class for my playstyle? Returning player
First of all welcome back and enjoy sour stay!
I would recommend watching some videos first. Classes which will suit your playstyle best are guardian and warrior – I’d say.
You can’t compare PvP and PvE. I would still suggest playing some rounds PvP, trying each class – you show great interest in.
Every class has its pros and cons. Warrior would be the best choice for a ‘newbie’ – playing a warrior doesn’t really require that much skill. You will deal damage regardless of of the class’s knowledge you are playing and the foe you’re facing.
Also making mistakes, using wrong weapons – playing the false rotation won’t be that bad.
And you will always find a party.
Play the class, while completing the map. You will get used to different mechanics concerning mobs in the game. Which will later on, when doing dungeons, also be of great profit.
Good luck
Since you already have the Guardian at 80 I’d say start there. If you find it’s lacking for your style then start looking elsewhere. They’re in a good place for your needs iirc.
I am mainly a pve player. I dod enjoy pvp and wvw on occasion, but mainly I stick to pve. I can tell you that out of all of the classes I’ve played I enjoy my ranger and my guardian the most. Their skill sets are always being switched to my liking depending on what I am doing. They are both good in dungeons, but I tend to use my guardian if I’m doing a dungeon with a whole group. If I’m just doing a dungeon with one or two people then I will pick my ranger because she is my main and I feel more comfortable with her play style.
I enjoy playing my ranger more when it comes to events and exploring the map. My guardian is great for bosses that are a little more challenging, like Tequatil.
I would pick a class that you are going to be comfortable playing.
I also love both Ranger and Guardian, and levelled both in that order. Now I run Guard as my main because I can take him anywhere. I can play ranged as well as close combat and am tanky enough to take a few hits (in new areas where I don’t know what I’m doing yet) before going down, which doesn’t happen often.
Even though I don’t run full Berserkers (Knight/Zerk mix) my dps is nothing to be sneezed at, also in level 80 areas. What I like most are the extra support abilities in groups. The Guardian virtues (F-key skills) give you amazing versatility in game play, basically extra damage, healing and protection for you and your allies.
I’m currently levelling a warrior and can already say this – they are NOT easier to play than a guard. Warriors are downed far more easily because they are far less effective ranged, which means you need to fight close-up nearly all the time, but have far fewer heals and protection skills than the Guardian.
This basically means the only viable option for a Warrior is to play Berserker style = kill everything before it kills you. But if they get in a luck shot, you’re dead. Great if that’s what you like, but that’s about it.
Imho the Guardian has a far easier and more forgiving learning curve and is very much loved in dungeons – so don’t be afraid to join a PUG with your guard. Just make sure you check online in advance whether there are particular skills/traits that are useful for you to have – or ask the group. :-)
Since you already have a level 80 Guard, take him/her out for a PvE run in a high level area and see how it goes.
Go online and check out videos of other players promoting their builds and tweak them to suit your own playing style. Once you’re reacquainted with your play style, you can optimise your build around that.
If you have the gold to spend, my advice would be to go for exotic armour, exotic weapons, and unlocking the traits you need for you build (not all at once).
Thanks a lot for your replies!
I spent some time with my guardian, and after reading a few guides and watching some videos, and looking over all the traits and abilities, i took him out for a spin in some high level areas and some world bosses, and it was very ejoyable!
Think I’m going to stick with him and my ranger
