Every so often I see someone insisting that it’s better to fail one step of the Frozen Maw event chain because you get better rewards at the end of it, or even that it’s essential for everyone to stop attacking or the event will bug and it will be impossible to compete it.

Is this just people getting confused between the full world boss event and the shorter chain that occurs in between (where the Svanir Sharman doesn’t show, you just escort the Priory Scholar out, destroy the dragon totem and everyone goes home)? Or is there actually something to it?

Can anyone explain why people say this? I’ve tried asking them in-game but the only explanation I get is “better loot”. (Or in one case “bcuz lulz”…)

There is no better loot by failing Maw, never have been, so they must confuse it with the normal event that goes outside of the Maw cycle.

I actually never seen this subject coming up at all, ever, so must be something local

I’m playing on EU servers, Desolation specifically but since it’s PvE it doesn’t matter.

I don’t see it every time I do the event, but every so often someone will insist that if we stopped attacking when the sharman first appears and let one phase fail (I think it’s either when he summons the portals or when you have to fight him directly) there’s a follow-up event with a bigger boss and that gives better rewards.

I’ve also seen people raging after the smaller event chain ended, claiming that we had ruined it and prevented the world boss spawning by destroying the totem too quickly, or at all. They never seem willing to listen when people tell them the boss is on a timer and doesn’t always spawn.

But I’m not sure if those two things are related, or if it’s two different complaints.

I’m pretty sure it’s either people trolling or people just being confused. There’s no event that happens if you fail any of the little pre-events; the timer would just keep going until it runs out, and then Brogun would go back to his waiting area until the next round of the mini-chain. Now, I don’t know if all of that is 100% true now. I do remember back when the event would sometimes fail (on off peak hours, back before megaservers), and nothing special would happen if any of the events failed.

There are a lot of faux-Maws where the Shaman doesn’t appear but there isn’t a real failure path that causes the actual event to respawn quickly. It’s failed events that respawn quickly that players have in the past milked the initial spawns for loot, not that the event failing rewards more.

Only thing I can think of with Maw is take your time so portals spit out more minions or delay killing the totem so the spawns get close enough to attack but I’m not even sure those drop anything.

We are heroes. This is what we do!

The event description does imply that there would be another boss if the event “fails” but it was easy to see that was not the case back before timers and before there was the daily chest. The shaman would wander around being very lonely for a long time. It would be pretty odd is ANet added another event after that at some point and never bothered to tell anyone about it.

I’ve also seen people mention this in chat when I did Maw recently – I’m also on EU Desolation – so it seems we do just have some local trolls, and the same as the times you’ve described they didn’t sound believable/ any substance in what they were saying so everyone ignored them.

The Svannir Shaman Chief, which is the world boss, shows up every 2 hours and the event that he shows up at starts at the 15 minute mark. There are 5 events when he shows up; protect supplies, escort, destroy totem, destroy guards and portals, kill Shaman.

In between those events, are smaller events that never generate the Shaman. But they do include the first 3 of that series of 5 events. Protect supplies, escort, and destroy totem, and then it ends. This occurs about every 15 minutes and gives no chest.

Because those smaller events run so much more often, players get confused over which is happening. If it’s isn’t on the World Boss Timers as a world boss event, the Shaman doesn’t show and the string of events will end with the destruction of the totem.

Failing any of the string of events will not improve rewards, ever.
