Bought a bottle, gave it a shot. Suppose it could be this if he had a whole lot of it, and was using retaliation or something.
Yes, maize balm lets you throw it onto an ambient or group of ambients in order to turn them into bite sized candy corns, which you can kill for one Trick or Treat bag per mob. And since the mobs have the same HP as the ambients, they die in one hit or with a quick aoe.
I’ve never seen them spawn with the same hit points as ambients. Never.
They aren’t overly tough, but they don’t go down in one hit like a crow or frog.

I’ve seen them do exactly that. Many times.
Only place they do have same hp as the ambients (about 100 hp) is Incubation Way Point area in Rata Sum. Yet its widely farmed now and you may have to get on the waiting list and learn how the farm is done fairly and efficiently for all before attempting it.
I tried the rata sum lab and that was the first time they ever did like that (my first try in the lab of course). It also looked like a big waste because there were only about 5, I don’t waste the potions for that few. Unless maybe you teamed up with someone, i could see how that would work.
I assume that was because it was a city instance and not open world, all my other spots are open world solo, backing up what Yumiko said above.
You are doing it wrong bob. You throw a bottle (one of three uses in each balm) at groups of three in the waves. Its very efficient if you time it right without causing the pattern to break. You should watch us do it sometime.
You use utility skills to kill them btw.
I didn’t think about utils, thats pretty sharp. I generally favored using a pet in the world but in rata sum of course that didn’t work. Thanks! I’ll try it!
