Hello all. I am brand new to Guild Wars 2. I have played for about a week, and yesterday for 3 hours before the servers went down for the roll back. I come from WOW, which I have become bored with. I tried Rift and it is fun but at the suggestion of my friend I came to Guild Wars 2 and so far I am really enjoying the game. To go into the reasons why would result in a long ramble. I will spare everyone that. I am looking for advice on which of the classes fit a solo pve playstyle? I am also looking for an active guild to join

Either use the guild forum to find a guild or, when in game, keep an eye out for which guilds advertise and join one of those. You can join up to 5 so you could join a wvw guild, a pve guild and a roleplay guild if you so wanted.

All the classes are good for pve and each race is also worth experiencing. I’d start with a guardian and a necro but others might say warrior and mesmer. Pretty easy to level so try them all.

Blame Abaddon, he loves your tears.
pve, raid, pvp, fractal, dungeon, world clearing, legendary questing.. Zapped!

All are pretty good but if you want a easy class just to get the basics of the game or for early exploring you really can’t go wrong with ranger.

Having said that tho I always suggest people to create a class and go straight into the pvp lobby and test out all the weps/skills/traits there. It’s a great place to check this stuff out as you are level 80 and have everything unlocked (skills/traits). You can also beat up the golems and npcs to see which class/build suits you.

Welcome to the game and good luck!

Since when did this business of being a hero become being a business?

Warrior tends to be pretty forgiving for first-timers. Necromancer can be fairly forgiving as well, but it’s more difficult to feel like you’re “doing” something with them. I couldn’t decide on a build until much later in my GW2 experience. If you’re into pet classes, Ranger can give a smidgen of the WoW-hunter experience (sort of).

Elementalist and Engineer are some of the more high skill/high reward cap characters, if you’re confident in your MMO skills.
Guardians are generally fairly desirable in groups, though I find them a tad squishy for a heavy armor class. Low HP, high damage mitigation/regen.
Revenant is a solid choice, though it needs some more polish. Legendary Assassin stance is your friend on a Rev.
Thief is your typical rogue-thing: high burst, decent evasion, squishy. Much more active an experience than most MMO thief types.

I suppose what I’m saying is that most classes are decent, depending on what your play style to be. :P

As for guilds, start here:

But also do a few Google searches for GW2 guilds. There should be a few aggregate sites you can cruise.

Many alts; handle it!
