I want to get my girlfriend in the game however she’s currently overseas and is on some ancient internet…

what would be the minimum mbps she could play on?

You can “play” with 1.5mbps, just don’t expect your latency to be stable (expect spikes once in a while). I currently play with 3mbps, and It’s a total chore…can’t wait till my 50mbps is hooked up.

I really don’t believe GW2 can possibly need 3Mb simply to play, the data traffic it generates can’t possibly saturate even a 1Mb link.

Latency is the most important thing. A 1 mbps connection is more then enough as long as your latency is/stays low enough.

I have an intermittent fault on my connection which means that every week or two I get a day or so of 0.5 Mbps. You can still play PVE at that speed and can even do some of the jumping stuff. Obviously, it’s not ideal and there are probably some things you cannot do but you can mostly get away with it. Disconnections and lag spikes would be much more disruptive than the actual connection speed.

High bandwidth is really only needed for the initial download and patches. In game bandwidth requirements are well under 100 KiB/s (10 KiB/s standing around DR at the TP). KiB/s is 1024 bytes per second.

Going to surprise her with a laptop and have gw2 pre-installed. She’s never gamed before, and we thought it was a good idea for us to spend time together while she’s working overseas. If it’s a no go, the game will be around still for when she comes back to the US.

Like I said, patches will be killer the less bandwidth she has and you have to get the patch to log in. I have slow 3 Mb/s (million bits per second) and the initial game took 12+ hours to download and the HoT expansion took roughly 3 hours. Adjust up and down according to what she’ll get.

Not being a gamer, you can at least walk around Tyria with her, it can be quite the beautiful world to walk through.

@Joey- I’m in the Philippines right now. Tell her that PLDT is the safest bet in terms of ISPs, and to get FIbr if she can (it costs around 2900php or $60 per month for up to 50mbps). 3mbps is the bare min she needs, cause NONE of the ISPs in the Philippines use PACNET, and they all rent their bandwidth from PLDT, resulting in all traffic being rerouted to PLDT lines, before being rerouted to China, then to the US.
