Can someone please take a moment to explain Skill Points? I understand we earn Skill Points from completing Skill Point Challenges and for gaining levels. What I am not quite understanding is how to spend Skill Points.

Also, once chosen, can skills be reset?

For example, as I have been leveling my Elementalist, I have been going to the Skills Panel and just selecting skills that “look good” (i.e., are useful to me). Is this correct? Is there any method to selecting skills other than what looks good? Can multiple points be placed in the same skill to strengthen the skill? Equipping the selected skills is a non-issue for me, since that makes sense. However, the methodology behind selecting what skills to purchase with Skill Points is baffling to me.

Any advice?

To the question:

You pay skill points to unlock skills. Once unlocked, they stay unlocked forever on that character and give you a wider variety of skills to use in your builds. You don’t need to unlock every skill that you have, only the ones that you feel compliment the build you have in mind. By the way, have a build in mind before you start spending, at least loosely. It’s always good to have some kind of plan for what you want to do with your character before you start any kind of investing.

Skill points cannot be used to improve an unlocked skill, only to initially make it available to you. Later in the game, skill points also serve as a kind of high end currency for when you start using the mystic forge. Some of the ingredients for the recipes can only be obtained by spending skill points. That’s one of the reasons to not go ahead and spend every point on unlocking skills you may never use. You’ll have better use for them later.

After you’ve hit 80, you’ll continue to acquire skill points by “dinging” the next level. You don’t actually go up another level, but you are rewarded with skill points as if you did. Skill challenges you haven’t completed can still add to your point total as well. This way, you will constantly be acquiring more skill points through play, even after capping. That’s important, especially if you ever want to craft legendary gear, which can only be done at the mystic forge.

Considering when you hit 80, you continue to “level” and earn skill points it almost doesn’t matter. So, if it pleases you, you can purchase them all eventually. Though, i recommend signets. They apply self buffs and have nice activations. Also, there are some things for the mystic forge you can buy with skill points i.e. the Eldritch(spelling?) Scroll is 50 skill points

Skill points can be used purchase skills or to purchase certain items for use with the Mystic Forge (located in Lions Arch among other places). Once a skill is purchased, you have it and can not get a refund for those skills points. That skill can be placed in an available skill slot but can be swapped out for a different one as long as you are not considered to be in combat. Note that you have 3 regular skill slots and one elite skill slot and regular skills only go in the regular slots & elites only in the elite. As noted above, you continue to earn skill points once you hit the level cap of 80.

Also worth noting is that you start to gain trait points starting at level 11. You will continue to gain trait points per level up to 80 but no beyond (so you max out at 70). These points can also be reset but only by speaking with a trait NPC & paying a fee.
