Hi, I’m a recent new player, and I’m currently playing as the engineer (love him by the way). I heard that the engineer is very versatile, in terms of game play, which fits my play-style perfectly.

But, after some research, I discovered something called Finishers, and the engineer seems to have a ton of Blast Finishers as well. But, I don’t really get how these Finishers work. Like, how do you perform these finishers, and what do they do?

There are skills that create AoE combo fields, of various types. There are other skills, called finishers, that you can use within/through a combo field to get an extra effect (depending on the type of finisher and the type of field). For instance, if you use a Blast Finisher in a Fire field, you give yourself and nearby allies three stacks of Might (a boon that increases damage).

There are actually two different things that might be called finishers.

1) Combo finishers – As Olvendred said these are effects on your skills which combine with a combo field to create extra effects in combat. Sometimes you can do an entire combo yourself by creating a field and using a finishers, for example using a flamethrower to create a fire field and putting a thumper turret in it to create a blast finisher to give yourself might. More often it will be when there are other people around and your skills interact with theirs.

2) PvP finishers – When you kill people in PvP and WvW they go into the downed state and you can then press F to use a finisher to kill them. Everyone has a basic default finisher but you can unlock others by playing PvP or buy them from the gem store.

You can just stick with the flamethrower there.
The toggle skill on the Flamethrower’s #2 is also a blast finisher.
