As the title states, I want to change stats on a specialization weapon, the staff Bo to be exact. I have changed stats on weapons before, so I know how it works.

The question I’m asking comes from a note from the GW2-wiki. It reads: “Any special ascended item (e.g. precursor or specialization weapon) will turn into antique weapons or illustrious armor with all their special properties lost.”

What are these “special properties” that the staff will loose if I change stats? I assume Bo is just like a regular staff with a unique skin. I also assume that I will “unlock” this skin, just like with every normal weapon when you equip it for the first time. That way I change transmute the staff to look like Bo again, just with the stats I want. Do I read too much into this note, or do the staff have any “special properties”?

Should be just the skins for specialization weapons although there’s the wardrobe so it’s not really “lost”. For precursors, you lose the ability for it to be used to craft a legendary weapon.

Seems to me that the note is misleading. You can re-stat and re-skin safely.

The item you end up with will be a reskinned Bo, not a Bo with new stats. That matters to some people.

I don’t believe that there are any animations associated with the specialization weapons that fail to reappear after a reskin. None of the wiki articles for those skins mentions anything unique to the weapon that wouldn’t also apply to the skin.

However, there are other ascended weapons for which that might not be true. So the author of the note thought it would be helpful to warn people generally. I think it would be better to list the exceptions, since I don’t think there are more than a few.

That’s what I thought as well. Wouldn’t want to ruin something from a collection.
