So I was at lunch today chatting with a friend about trying GW2 out and of the questions she asked was how many characters can you make to which I said 6. Well, she’s something of an altoholic and asked if you could purchase more slots…..

And I don’t know the answer. Are we limited to 6 or can one purchase more slots?

She would be F2P and I am not.

Paid accounts can have a maximum of 72(73?) character slots, though I think that requires several past situations to gain a couple slots that cannot be gotten any longer (HoT pre-purchase/“compensation” slots). So a new/paid account today could likely get their max slots up to about 70.

Additional character slot unlocks are available in the gem store for 800 gems each, though they do sometimes go on sale for less (usually about 650).

Based on how the account types and restrictions pages read, I originally thought Play For Free accounts could not purchase additional character slots unless they purchased the game. Additional posts here by other players informed that P4F players are able to purchase additional character slots from the gem store.

Yes, you can purchase more slots IF you have bought the game. If you’re Free To Play, you only get 2. But if you’ve bought the game (either the base game alone or HoT), you’ll start off with 5 slots (except for certain HoT versions that give you a bonus slot). You can buy additional slots (on paid accounts) on the gem store, and you can have up to 70 characters on a single account.

So, yes if she purchases the game she can buy character slots! I hope this convinces her to give it a try because I’m having a great time in game!!

This is a very good game for altoholics simply because it is easy to level up and due to the wardrobe system and makeover kits it is also easy to make them exactly the way you want them.

A friend of mine has like 8 different Elementalists characters, all with different builds and most are different species, one for each species and like 3 of her favorite species. I was like wow, why? Then I learned how easy it is to do and well… It gives you something to do in the game when you start to get bored of it.

As far as I can tell free players can purchase individual character slots. I don’t have any gems on my free account so I couldn’t complete the transaction but it isn’t locked like other items which aren’t available and selecting it just takes me to the gem purchase screen, it doesn’t say anything about not being able to buy it.

But considering it’s 800 gems for 1 slot (£8.50, $10, €10) its probably better to just upgrade to a full account if she likes it enough to want more than 2 characters, since that will lift all the other restrictions too.

Another benefit for altaholics is that full accounts get login rewards, including Tomes of Knowledge, which makes levelling alts even faster.

Free accounts can buy slots. Mine has one bought. But if you want several, it probably makes more sense to get HoT.
