Hi everyone,
I have read lots of posts and articles saying choose which profession you like the most rather than on how powerful they are said to be in certain aspects and I think it is the right way to go about things. However, after playing for some time I still cannot choose between the Mesmer and the Warrior. I enjoy playing both and may eventually level both of them, but in the meantime I need to choose which one to focus on. I like the abilities of both, I enjoy the mechanics of both and I like the playstyle of both.

How should I go about choosing between them? If you have any experience playing either profession I would be glad to hear your opinions on it and the strengths and weaknesses of the profession. Anything that could potentially help me decide between these professions will be appreciated.
Thanks for taking the time to read this and I hope you can help

I have an 80 Warrior and a 20 Mesmer. The Warrior got all that love due to being an RP character. I’m hardly a Mesmer expert. Still, I’ll try to give you some ways to think about your choice.

Warrior is physically tough. I just don’t need to dodge much on her, especially compared to my Thief main who has to be in constant motion. Mesmer is surprisingly resilient and has some of the strongest tricks when downed, so it seems good at getting out of trouble even if it can’t shrug it off to start with. There are Mesmers in my guild that can go through a Project Alpha fight without ever even getting downed.

Mesmer requires a lot more micromanagement, at least so far for me. Tracking clones and phantasms, picking which effect you want when you shatter them, ground targeting for teleports, all that gives it a steeper learning curve. I think Mesmer tends to more group utility in a wider variety of situations, though support Warriors can be highly useful as well.

An obvious point: Warrior wears Heavy armor, Mesmer wears Light. Which type of armor in this game’s aesthetics do you want to look at the most?

Armour isn’t really a concern for me unless it reduces mobility because I quite like being mobile as so far in this game it seems to help a lot

I got a lvl 80 Warrior / Guardian / Elemental

They all are pretty fun and each are very different to play with. I would suggest asking yourself (in no particular order)

1. do you prefer ranged fighting or close melee (most classes do both pretty well) but if you want ranged for example a guardian may not be the class for you.

2. Within a group do you like to be the “spear” or the “shield” – spear being the warrior and guardian being the shield (again with specs you could make a guardian a “spear” but their traits and abilities lean “more” toward a “shield”

Best advice is probably to make a character and then go to PVP.. even if you aren’t much of a PVP’r because it will automatically let you play at lvl 80 and you can try out all the various abilities and traits … hope that helps a little and good luck

Still such a hard decision, but I’m leaning towards warrior because I like the idea of having a sword and shield and I prefer melee combat but people say the warrior is the worst class for PvP which is kinda making me rethink

this is a “weapon set themes by class” that kind of helped me in the beginning-

How should I use this, for example sword is in the offensive section for warrior and shield is in the defensive section. Does that mean I shouldn’t put them together or not?

as to how you should use it – its really more of a guide letting you know the type of weapons each class can use and a “general” idea of the traits the weapons possess.

an example might be..if you have sword in MH (main hand) then the first 3 skills of warrior (in this case) would be offensive abilities for the sword with skills 4/5 left open. Then when you equip shield in OH (off hand) it will fill in skills 4/5 and they will be defensive.

As to whether or not you would use them together is a question of preference, play style, and build (I personally use Great sword for weapon 1 and axe/sheild for weapon 2.)

I used it mainly to decide which class I wanted to play based on which weapons they had available to them.. and depending on what kind of role I would like to play (offense) (defense) (support) I knew which weapons would work “best” (best being a matter of opinion)

In the end which ever profession you pick by lvl 80 I would almost carry each weapon that class could use..

(hopefully I didn’t just confuse you more lol) <edit>

Thanks for the help but ugh, all of this choice! such a hard decision because I want to pick a class that suits me but both the warrior and mesmer seem to suit different parts of my personality and when I think I’m set on 1 profession the other one just pulls me back again. I guess I’m just very indecisive but I want to get it right because I’m going to be dedicating a lot of time to my character.

I know exactly what you’re going through. Indecisiveness is a pain, haha. From my experience, mesmer is more of a challenge to level but it has plenty of variety and it’s never boring. I don’t have as much experience with warrior.

My main is a warrior and I have literally tried every weapon and gear combo I can in dungeons and in wvw.. I leveled a Guardian to the 30’s, got bored, leveled a ranger to 80 and felt like it was sort of hollow, then I leveled this warrior, and can’t even make myself try anything else. I’ve just stuck with it. If you like melee, you can’t really go wrong with it. You have a choice of so many weapon combinations with the warrior, and all are viable if you use them right with the right traits.

How should I use this, for example sword is in the offensive section for warrior and shield is in the defensive section. Does that mean I shouldn’t put them together or not?

Depends on what you want. Sword gets a boost from conditions, but it doesn’t scale too bad with power either. Not a bad burst skill. Especially in pvp where the burst skill (F1) applies it’s root even if you don’t finish the cast. The shield is amazing with any main hand. A stun, plus a three second block is amazing in pve and pvp. If you want more direct damage and still like the shield, use an axe. It probably has the highest damage on a main hand you can get. The mace is a control weapon. It comes with a block, stun, etc. Not very high damage, but a lot of control.
