Im trying to decide on a class to play
What i like in a class:
Lots of diversitry in the classes skills/wepons (this one is by far the most important to me)
Ok in all modes (PvP,WvW and PvE both solo and in a group)
Cool looking skills
Viable ranged options with good dps (preferably with some melee)
Can take some hits before dying
Mobility/Movement abilities for exploring

From what i could find engineer and elementalist best match my description but im open to any class. im worried that they cant be played well by a new player and ill wont be able to do very well compared to the simpler classes and the elementalist is supper squishy which im not a big fan of.

Engi and Ele are indeed the most fitting to what you describe there, also Rev if your’e into that since it’s quite a lot simpler than the other two. That aside they aren’t really that much harder to learn than other classes as long as you learn the attunements on Ele and the kits on the Engi.

The other thing is that Ele is a squishy bugger on full zerk gear but if you run a little more defensive build you’ll do just fine, and this game after all is all about those active defenses

Gonna wrap up by saying that I don’t know of a class that can be played well by a new player since even the “simple” classes require finesse to play efficiently. You’re not gonna be immediately good on anything really, just play it enough and you will.

I wouldnt say this game is all about active defensive a most classes are carried by Passives, only 3 use any real active defenses

Sounds like you’re looking for a Master Class that has all the strengths of the others but none of the weaknesses. From your list you want just about every base covered. All modes, both burst and sustained, not squishy, diversity, mobility… etc.

Sorry to call you out a little but I’m just trying to put things into perspective and make you realize there are some pros and cons otherwise everyone would roll only 1 profession.

When I first started, my main goal was to fulfill a key role in a group because at the time I thought this was going to be like GW1. I was having flashbacks to being kicked out of Elite Missions because I was a ranger…

So I rolled warrior and elementalist. Ele was harder. You’re right, it is very squishy and can be unforgiving for new players. Warrior however could tackle almost all content solo fairly easily. When I finally made it to dungeons, what I thought would the be all end all end game, I also felt integral to every party I was in.

As a warrior, not only can you put out great DPS, but the offensive support you bring to a party is immense. With banners and might stacking with your phalanx strength trait…well, simple translation, you make your team do huge amounts of damage compared to what they would be doing were you not there.

But warrior is currently lacking in pvp. And the build variety is very low. You will almost always have a greatsword equipped.

What I’m trying to say though is, I later found out this wasn’t like other mmos and that I didn’t have to play a class with a clearly defined role to fit in. Professions also shift from being good at something, to not so good at something based on updates. So in short, pick a class you have fun with and you’ll find a way to make it work for anything.

None. There is no class like that. Lower your expectations.

Hailsec – Asuran Mesmer | EVOS
Zraiyya – Asuran Elementalist | EVOS
Akkodi – Asuran Engineer | EVOS

Just read your edits. Consider Ranger. Very strong at range but can swap to a greatsword, or a sword to do some up close melee damage. Also is quite resilient with a pet to help tank. You can easily defend forts in wvw with your longbow, and if you get HoT, you can swap to druid specialization to support your team in group content.

So… Revenant?

Do you also have HOT? If so, I’d suggest engy. Kits give a wide range of skills, good in all modes, scrapper in particular is very defensive, can run grenades for range. Up to you to decide if the skills look cool, but mechanically it’s what you’re looking for. Just be prepared to input three times as many keys as everyone else.

… kitten. I just made a post adding to “Warrior is Good, as long as you don’t mind not using magic”. Just remember to take Discipline as your first trait. Longbow is a solid ranged weapon, with good mitigation, conditions, and AoE/multihit. Rifle is a solid “Pointy Finger of Doom” great for poking single enemies to death quickly from range (And multihit if you can line enemies up with 3). Greatsword is the best warrior weapon in most game modes due to its support (Phalanx Strength+Forceful Greatsword), Defense (Evade on 3), mobility (3 and 5), range+control (4), damage (1, 2, 3, 5, F1), and cleaves (1-4 and F1), but the other weapons all bring their own strengths, such as Sword’s mobility and flexibility (High burst damage and conditions on all 5 slots, and block on 5), mace’s defense and CC, and axe’s sheer eviscerating damage of unrelenting pain to your enemies. Oh, and warhorn offers some support and swiftness on-demand. They have excellent survivability thanks to many of their utilities (Reliable stability, invulnerability to conditions or direct damage), and provide solid offensive support through shouts and banners.

Put each class name on a dartboard, and throw a dart.

You’ll have fun no matter where the dart lands, so long as you pick Charr or Asura for your race.

If you can live with less diversity than ele and engi, I suggest Daredevil. I quit GW2 couple of years ago, but what brings me back is Daredevil. The most fun class I’ve ever played.

If in the future GW2 creates an elite specialization that plays like the daredevil, but has the flavour of GW1 mesmer, then I will become addict. I’m worried about that. XD
