The four classes mentioned are good at using GS in their own right. It all boils down to what playstyle you want from your class. It seems that Warriors having GS is like a general rule because it deals really good damage. Guardians, from my experience feel more comfortable to use as I like their whirling attack compared to the Warrior. I have my Ranger use a GS as his secondary and its the best for mobility and against mobs and it’s skill 1 saves a great deal in my dodge meter. Mesmers with GS have a real strong skill 1 ability especially at longer ranges in addition to the AoE skills it offers.

Um ok… why?

I have no idea what that’s about either. Skill #1 is a very good attack, particularly at longer ranges (the further away you are, the more damage it inflicts), and skill #3 is pretty good at tagging multiple targets. In fact, the greatsword is my mesmer’s primary weapon.

I’m going to assume his comment is ment for PvE where a Greatsword is indeed a very poor choice for Mesmer in most situations:

1. Any utility it offers for PvE is either unneeded (like Cripple, Vul, Good Shatter-burst set-up capability and Range) or better done by a different weaponset (Boon Removal, Mob-positioning) in the general PvE-Envoirment.
2. It’s number 1 attack is inferior to Sword 1 (even if you’re at max Range, the loss is obviously even more considerable in close-range, sitting at max Range however makes you miss out on party-boons such as Fury/Might) Neither does it cleave, causing even more loss vs a group of enemies when it comes down to sustained damage. (The Greatsword Phantasm does cleave, compensating a little bit.)
3. It’s one of the weakest phantasms, which in return are a huge part of a Mesmers damage potentional in PvE, /Pistol /Sword are better choices for pure damage on your average target and /Focus in unmatched in utility due to it’s anti-projectile (reflect if specced) on the Phantasm.
4. It doesn’t work well with itself in PvE, it’s phantasm needs to survive it’s whole attack-chain to get it’s damage off (assuming it’d be able to hit all 4 hits in the first place,) where-as the weapon itself would be good for fights you’d ‘need’ to Range, for the Bounce on #2 it’s beneficial to be in melee-Range to inflict Vul and receive Might. So even at Range I’d recommend Sc/P to not lose all your phantasm damage, assuming your spec is build for that, which I surely hope so in the average PvE environment.

I hope this clarifies his statement, all it has going for it really is that a purple lazerbeam is a fashionable statement?

It’s still a great weapon in sPvP/Roaming where it does come to it’s full potential with a pushback, big damage on a boon-removal that can be timed with a good shatter (buffed up by a #2 skill bouncing might on you if you’re near enough, recommended for a Shatter) and an easy-to-get-off auto-attack that hits considerably on targets trying to be anywhere except in your face (likely meaning they have no idea how to counter you.)

To the OP; Mesmer, Warrior, Guardian, Ranger can all use Greatsword in their weaponslots, for both Warrior and Guardian it’s also part of their meta-builds for PvE. For sPvP most Warriors won’t use Greatswords (it’s a bit difficult to get it’s damage off on players) whilst Mesmer and Ranger see use of it in most builds, Guardian in any damage-orientated build, though Bunkers tend to be more common, which tend to prefer Staff + Mace/Focus (though it varies.))

If you guys stick your heads out of speedcleared dungeons, you might see that GS is a great weapon for 90% of Tyria for 90% of players. Dungeons = PvE, but PvE =/= dungeons, even if you solehandedly write a “Dungeon class guide” and call it “PvE class guide”. I’ve seen players who are looking at metabattle builds and dulfy.net guides and thinking those will make them happy, while in practice more AoE and skill spam is better for what these players actually play most of the time. In short:

  • If you’re speedclearing dungeons in a balanced organised group which knows all encounters, stacks, fights in melee and pre-stacks might, you as a mesmer with GS are a liability and should feel bad. That way you use sword + offhands, help your team and enjoy the game.
  • If you’re running a dungeon with pugs who are very likely to range and you’re not a pro with some 1k+ hours on the class, you use GS and enjoy the game.
  • If you’re running around the world tagging mobs for loot, you use GS because it’s fast and efficient since it provides good AoE and cannot be reflected, which lets you enjoy the game.

Depends on a mesmer whether you want to fight at range or close quarters. Using a GS, 4 of the 5 skills can be done at max range of 1200. Using sword/sword you have 3 skills at close quarters or 130, 1 at 900 and one at 1200 and with sword/pistol you have 2 at 130, 1 at 600 and 2 at 900.

So using a GS allows you to work at max range most of the time and GS is most effective at max range for a mesmer. As I have every class I choose to play my mesmer at range with GS and if I want to play close quarter GS I use my Guardian or Warrior.

And no i wasnt talking about dungeons. If you want aoe just go sword focus? Its better dps, got a sustainable aoe auto attack and more utility. Only downside is its not 1200 range. :P

Amazingly enough you can actually use both weapon sets on the same character!!! /sarcasm

Seriously, unless you are going condition build on a Mesmer GS is your ranged weapon choice and your best melee choice is S/F. Have to disagree with with a poster above regarding the GS phantasm – its one of the best for one simple reason – it moves beyond normal melee range of its target with its attack. In PvE you can stack several of them during the same encounter against a tougher target.

Cannot speak to GS on Warriors but its a good choice for Guardians and Rangers. I recently went back to GS on my Ranger because (although the S/D or S/W were better dps) of the issue with the sword staying on your targeted foe, the apparent rooting during part of the attack chain and I found using it anything “inanimate” being a pain. GS 1 on Rangers is still a little lackluster but overall I find it less “annoying” to use.

Pretty much this. I do not even understand where this “dungeons are the only real PvE thing” is coming from, when ANet long, long time ago abandoned dungeons.

For general use, GS is a great weapon, best AoE tagging, best reaction speed in events. Sword sucks pretty much everywhere besides coordinated group content. Which is sort of a joke after what, two years of the same old same?

Show me a mesmer weapon that can reliably tag anything or deal nearly as much damage at 1200. GS is good for everything but condi. The only time it’s not optimal is in a dungeon stack, which I’d argue is more “niche” than the myriad of other pve situations.

Ranged tagging is a niche. You can tag perfectly fine with sword auto and wardens.

But you have to actually run up to the mob to get a melee tag. Ranged is faster if you tab through. Also mobs, especially these new mordrem, tend to move out of warden aoe. That’s if the warden isn’t insta-gibbed in the sea of aoe trails and cleaving leap attacks. Warden is also stationary during it’s animation and has a cooldown.

I hear a lot of high praise for phantasm builds in pve, but in my experience they just die instantly. That’s with the health trait and signets. I do far more reliable, albeit bursty, dps kittenter. Maybe that’s just me, idk. I also find it more fun to actually press my clone and shatter buttons rather than ignore them in favor of phantasms.

this….so much.
for 99% open world pve, tagging mobs is most important…use the weapons which maximize tagging. dungeons are very different from open world…and fractals are different from most dungeons.

as for OP question, it is a great weapon for all the classes that can use it, but iof you had to choose one class to use it, you’d probably be best going warrior….it’s their main damage weapon and you can literally camp it if you want (boring way to play, but you can).

for ranger, its best as a secondary set for mobility
for mesmer, its the best tagging weapon they have
for guardian, its a great aoe damage weapon (outclassed by sword and scepter for single target)

The reason they praise mesmer sword is because it’s auto attack has the highest dps of the class, and the #2 skill evades while still dealing dps. In a dungeon everyone stacks for melee anyway, so sword is the only way to go. In the rest of the game there’s this thing called open space that you have to deal with.

Melee tagging stuff with warden as secondary option? While you have a ranged weapon with all AoE instant attacks and super short cooldowns if double traited?

Tagging stuff in PvE is hard enough for mesmers, but tagging with S/F – why would anyone do that? Because you want to avoid any loot at all?

Sword is more or less useless outside of dungeons, the GS is in most cases, outside of dungeons the better choice.

Lol okay well “tagging” may be technically a niche but it’s a niche about as wide as the grand canyon when it comes to pve. GS wins in the open world for tagging, and it remains competitive and more reliable for DPS in the open world IMO. So tagging and DPS. I don’t know how many other niches there are in pve.

Mesmer GS is woefully underestimated in pve. It’s not as powerful as sword for dungeon melee stacking, but in a shatter build, GS is key in delivering 20k+ clone bombs which can be pulled off every 40 seconds, with 15k mind wracks every 11 seconds. It’s far superior for killing things in the open field where things move around and you can’t rely on phantasms to stay up.

As for you… Have you ever taken advice in your entire life? For anything? Did you stop to think maybe someone was just trying to help when they suggested you use a certain weapon? Your attitude reflects the social decay of today’s society (at least here in the U.S.) and it’s depressing. Let me tell you something. When a player suggests you play a certain way, they aren’t doing so out of some secret Illuminati world domination conspiracy. They just want to increase the groups chances of beating the boss. Everyone benefits, including you. You don’t have to do everything everyone says, but it doesn’t hurt to listen.

when solo or with guildies/friends who don’t care…..do whatever you want.

when attempting to play in an organized groups or in PUGS with strangers, do a little research and see what is most beneficial to a group in either situation.

The OP seems to like the look of greatswords and therefore wonders what class to use them with.

If you like swinging your greatsword around like a boss, I’d say warrior. You’ll chop your foe into pieces with gs2, you twirl around showing off more particle effects with 3, just plainly throw your greatsword at your opponents face with 4, and rush to your foe to gut them open with 5. Some greatswords look awesome and impressive on warriors, I think.
Guardian is good with greatsword, but doesn’t really show it off as much as the warrior, maybe. Same for ranger, although I don’t play my ranger much.
If you like shooting beams, then go with mesmer.

But I have to say I agree with Mesmer not being great in pve with their greatsword. I don’t play my mesmer all too much, though, so maybe I don’t know what I’m talking about. But from what I read in this thread, GS is the best “tagging”-weapon.

As someone already said, tagging is niche in pve, and in my case it does not constitute “80%” of my pve experience. I like to enjoy world events such kittenterer, jungle wurm, fire elemental, svanir shaman, etc. and get credit easily with sword/focus and sword/pistol. Doing map completion and getting Renowned Heart quests done, with the occasional event you bump into, also doesn’t require any GS “tagging”. Doing my harvesting runs also doesn’t require GS tagging, even when I’m in Orr and killing a group of mobs here and there for the extra drops. I don’t believe “getting tags” is the majority of open world PvE play, so GS seems to me like a weapon that you’d use only if you’re out champ/event farming.

That said though, most of the time in open world pve, you’re playing by yourself or with friends and you just take a weapon that you think looks/feels nice to you and you get the job done, albeit not always in the most effective manner.

As for you… Have you ever taken advice in your entire life? For anything? Did you stop to think maybe someone was just trying to help when they suggested you use a certain weapon? Your attitude reflects the social decay of today’s society (at least here in the U.S.) and it’s depressing. Someone opens their mouth to give free advice during a cooperative activity, and he receives a mountain of vitriol for his effort. As if advice has become an insult.

Your soapbox would be a lot sturdier if it wasn’t for the fact that people literally kick you out of dungeon groups if you’re not playing your character the way they want you to.

Thats why i said niche situations. No need to take offense and go on the defensive.

So suddenly 80% of the content is niche? Interesting.

Sorry, I didn’t realize that 80% of players’ prime time is spent running around in zergs and tagging either. But I do realize when it boils to tag-or-die game, the guardian’s staff would triumph and mesmer’s gsword becomes next to obsolete.

For those who enjoy Silverwaste like me, iDuelist is pretty sick with its safe-ish unloading range, iSwordman has a dodge and both weapons provide solid block/CC skills. They are particularly good against Mordrem Wolves who come in pack and constantly jump on you.

That said, I use Gsword almost constantly in WvW (zerg or group) and in PvP, only sometimes in PvE on sleepmode.

I’ve literally never seen that happen so I guess I’ll just have take your word for it that everyone in GW2 acts like such a child. In that case, fine, don’t listen to those jerks. However don’t jump down my throat just because you’ve had a bad experience. Sometimes you do, in fact, need to use the correct weapon or skill to kill the boss. That’s just how games work.

By the way, this IS a cooperative multiplayer game last time I checked. Why do people get so uppity about their build and instead “play how I want” in a multiplayer game where success is measured in group effectiveness? It’s not even that hard to switch your build. Your staff will still be there in your bag when you finish the dungeon. I promise your staff won’t get jealous you were using the sword for 20 minutes.

Lol. Well, you must be fun at parties.

Bit of a stretch to link ‘social decay’ to someone who just wants to play a game and doesn’t care if he takes twenty minutes to finish a dungeon instead of fifteen.
