Classes -- Why did you pick that?
I chose warrior because: http://i.imgur.com/dcsorpM.jpg
It’s the chain I beat you with until you
recognize my command!”
At the moment, I have one of each type of class (except engineer, still haven’t gotten round to that one). The way I picked my classes depended on my characters themselves. A lot of it came down to personalities and backstories that I had created for them.
As for what class I enjoy most: Guardian & Mesmer. I love my guardian because he was my first character in game, and he’s an absolute tank with a focus on healing. He beats the crap out of enemies and is great in group.
Mesmers I love because they’re just plain fun in my opinion. And they have the portal skill which comes in handy 9 times out of 10. Bless the mesmers, as I like to say. Plus, my asura mesmer is so darned adorable I have gushing fits over her.
When it comes to picking classes, it’s really all dependent on you. I know that everyone says that by default, but it’s honestly the truth. I picked based on how I RP my characters. Some people pick based on what’s best for Competitive Play. Others may just like one class’s skills over another. It just boils down to your play style.
My advice: play around with it. If you decide you don’t like that class, delete before you get too far and try again. Save that scroll for a character you’re certain of.
Hope this was of some slight use to you. And if not, then I wish you luck either way!
I prefer classes that have lots of interesting and diverse game-play tools. I always favor utility over maximizing one focus for a build. That said, I really love playing Necromancer, Elementalist and Guardian.
focus on Dungeons, Fractals and Raiding.
I’m a fairly predictable sort. In every game…here…WoW…Diablo 3…basically all single-player fantasy RPGs I play…several things don’t change. I am always Tayledras…and I am always whatever the game has that passes for a Warrior.
I’m the sort that likes to melee what I kill. Spellcasting and holy power doesn’t beat the tried and true method of steel and strength. And believe me when I say there is a difference between lobbing green goop-ball curses at an enemy versus sending them skyward with a hammer the size of a small child. I love that visceral feeling you get. And the difference generally between why I play Warrior as opposed to say thief/rogue types is that not only can you deliver the hits…you can take them, laugh at them for trying, and proceed to pound them into next week. GW2 has the two more on even footing…but I still prefer my plate armor. Don’t get me wrong…I have a mesmer max level and an elementalist, thief and necro…but Warrior will always be my main.
I picked a ranger because ranged combat is generally my go-to in rpg games, and I enjoy having a companion, even if it is an npc (i generally don’t make many friends in games due to my shy nature so it gives me a “you and me against the world!” feeling)
I also picked it because of kudzu, which is my favorite legendary and weapon in the game, period.
Also, this wasn’t intentional, but if I knew the class were somewhat of an underdog i would have been even more biased to choose it. I like underdogs, and I play semi-casually so if i do mediocre people usually don’t mind

I went Guardian first. Because they had that healy-damage-utility kind of vibe. Also heavy armor is a bit of blessing while you learn this games combat.
But I found his utility so good that I kinda felt he was not living up to his potential when i played solo.
But what to pick next? I pretty much tried them all (altho I did want to try warrior, I didn’t want a different type of guardian).
Ele is very cool, and so was mesmer, but I had trouble not getting stomped in combat.
Ranger was ok. Combat was easy, damage was good, but it just wasn’t very furfilling. It didn’t feel like there was much to do as a ranger.
Engineer grabbed my attention for quite a while. They could do anything you wanted. Be as simple or as complex as you’d dare. However I think mine wore a little thin because with effort they were a little too good solo (or it was very hit and miss, nothing inbetween).
Thief never really took off for me. I could see the damage potential, but just couldn’t stick it out to realise it. And I don’t naturally lean towards builds that would make him effective.
So after facerolling my ranger to lvl 52 I made the switch back to Mesmer (mostly just to get the daily ach xp bonuses). But he quickly grew on me. Now hes level 51 and well on track to be my main.
Once you learn combat and damage with the Mesmer, you can do almost everything with them.
However I’d give my left one for my copies to not die along with my target, but when I left combat.
I don’t think it’s such an important decision really. I’m not trying to devalue your plight here but is there something wrong with leveling whatever you feel like whenever you feel like it?

I have only 1 class at 80, my Ranger. I chose Ranger because he’s the Ranger, therefore superior to other classes, in my eyes.
Also, once I got to 80, I got very sick of GW2. Hence no other 80s.
Working on: Engineer
Elementalist! I had a Ranger/Elementalist as my main in GW1, but he leaned pretty heavily on Fire Magic, so he was almost more of a thick-skinned ele than a ranger. When I started GW2, I made a Ranger and an Ele in the first beta weekend, and enjoyed them both, but preferred the Ele.
I could say I enjoy the skillful play or diverse utility skills, but I’ll be honest: Half the reason I’m in it is for the SHEER FLASHINESS OF IT ALL. Elementalists get some of the most colorful, flashy skills in the game, from conjured weapons to an obscene number of particle effects, and I enjoy that. Mesmers have a lot of great skills as well, but they have a much, much more limited color palette.
Ranger in GW1 → Ranger in GW2.
It was my first character i leveled to 80. I still play it as a roaming profession in WvW.
But also i had to follow the GWEN meta in WvW. So i went warrior for raiding.

I picked all the classes because I have a serious altitis problem. No really, I have more 80’s than I’d like to admit to… but I assure you I have atleast one of each problem.
Why do I (mostly) main engineer though? I haven’t the foggiest sometimes. I seem to have the most fun with the class, and I’ve always liked the reactionary higher skillcap play. Kits that I can switch to at any time, and the potential for additional skills is something I love – which may also be why I play my elementalists the second most.
For the toast!
I started with ranger and played that as main for the longest time due to the simple fact that I was determined to not getting side-tracked by my altitis again (I’ve had like 50+ characters across different servers in the mmo I played before this one).
Eventually, once the ranger had finished world exploration, I tried a warrior, since I wanted something different (I had always played tank/healer/support in other games, and never a dps class), but to this day the class just doesn’t click with me (even though I have finished world exploration on the warrior, too).
Third came an elementalist, and with it the deeper understanding of game mechanics and lots of fun with combo fields and similar tools. That character quickly became my most-played one (and is to this day, even though I haven’t played her a lot lately).
Next to 80 was an asura mesmer that started out as a funny experiment (I had started and failed a couple of mesmer characters before that just didn’t hold my attention). Somehow, this time the class finally got to me, and I had so much fun with the mesmer (on an alt account … long story), that my fifth character to 80 was another mesmer (not asura unfortunately) on my main account.
Sixth to 80 was a guardian (I like world exploration, and getting to know different classes ), and seventh and latest 80 is a thief, although I’m still not totally sold on that class.
Personal favourites to play right now are:
1. mesmer in all kinds of content
2. melee ranger in dungeons (I just recently rediscovered the class and character and have a great time with the build I’m learning)
3. elementalist for the complex gameplay, although I don’t play her a lot at the moment
4. guardian, which I have not mastered yet, but find more interesting to play each day
I’d say try them all. Only you can say what class really holds your interest. The “feeling” of how the class plays is very different between the classes (while you can pretty much get any content to work with any class), so it’s mostly a matter of personal preference.
I had an Ele and a Mesmer already and when i wanted to get back into the game with a new character Necro stood out for me. I always liked “dark” characters and i can somewhat relate to her at least, not like my Ele or Mesmer.
I’m wondering why you guys picked the classes that you did, whether you have only one main or several level 80’s that you play. Why that class, and which way do you play it? I THINK every class can tank/heal/dps but I’m not sure.
I have 5 level 80’s, and play them all, so do not really have a main anymore.
I began playing a ranger from launch for 4-5 months, did 100% world, then created a guardian to focus on dungeons and more difficult PvE content. I still use the ranger for dailies, some world bosses, PvE content and guild mission. But my ‘go to’ class for dungeons or anything difficult is my guardian.
A few months after the guardian, I created a mesmer after reading a very amusing guide on leveling and playing a shatter mesmer. I now use this for any PvE content requiring ranged combat since the class is the best at this in the game, imo.
When the Tripple-Headed Wurm event was introduced, I leveled a condi necro just for this event. This is all I use it for, but did take it into the battle of LA quite a bit when that was running.
My last and final character is a thief. I tried this class during the 3-day head start and didn’t like it that much, so deleted it and created a ranger instead. Now that I am much more familiar with the game, I appreciate the role a thief has, and constantly amazed at the damage output this class can do. Plus it is a fun class to play. Since the recent changes at Tripple-Headed Wurm event, there is less need for necros, and have been bringing my thief to this event instead of the necro.
I liked playing a rogue in Diablo – D3 and also a sorcerer so started with a ranger here then an elementalist. I decided I wanted something different so went mesmer for my third, which quickly became my favorite. Never liked melee before but decided to try a warrior as my 4th and like melee fine here in GW2. Thief was fifth and guardian sixth. Those 6 are at level 80 now. Started an engineer and a necromancer, in their 50s and 60s now. Since I had so much fun with mesmer another one, also 80, and then another mesmer at level 71 now.
So of my 10, 1 of every profession plus 2 extra mesmers. My human mesmer is my main. She’s the only one with 100% map completion, although I plan to complete map with ranger and elementalist since they both already have 100% of WvW. I also really like my asura mesmer and my new one – a sylvari.
Mesmers are just so much fun to play, at least for me.
I’ve tried everything at 80 and geared besides Ranger and Necromancer. The two classes I play are Elementalist and Thief.
The main reason I play Elementalist and Thief is because they’re fast-paced and can be unforgiving yet very rewarding if played correctly. Also, daggers are cool.
My main classes are necro & ele.
Necro is my favourite class to play and currently the only class i take in to fractals. I can play it well, I also pvp with necro, as again it’s the class I play best.
It’s the first class I picked and I had no intention of leveling other classes at the time.
I chose it because on some magazine that described class difficulty it was considered an inbetweener, easier than thief harder than guardian. (I had thought of choosing thief, but being new to mmo I wanted something considered “easy”….but heavies look boring to me xD…..)
I levelled an ele because it’s much easier/quicker to pug with. So my ele is my dungeon runner.
I’ve levelled a mesmer just for jp’s.
I main ranger because i always main the beastmaster class. That is for several reasons actually and none of them being that im lazy and like to have the ai do the work.
Another pluspoint was the extremely stylistic and fluid melee combat the class has and that im unlike in some fails like wow not forced to use any kittened bows to play beastmaster. I hate bows. The reason why i still main the class till now is, while it pretty much failed entirely on the beastmaster part, that it still has the coolest and pretty effective (melee) weapon skills. I just enjoy it the most.
Im currently looking forward to black desert. Their tamer looks like one of the best beastmasters made til today. =)
Full melee Ranger since August 2012
