ive been trying to learn exactly what “Combo Finishers” are and how to use them. ive tryed going over the gw2 wiki page but find it too confusing. for example: my engi’s healing turret skill says Combo Field: Water or Combo Field: Light. I really dont understand this and would appreciate it if someone could dumb it down for me.
All i really know is that with a D/P thief, skill 5, then 2, grants you a few seconds of invisibility lol

Basically a combo works like this.

You need two things,
1) A combo field
2) A combo finisher

A field can be something like a Water Field or a Fire Field

A finisher can be something like a Blast Finisher, Leap Finisher, or Projectile Finisher

The effect you get depends on what combination you make.

If you use a Leap Finisher to move inside of a Fire Field you gain a Fire Aura. If you use a Blast Finisher on a Fire Field you instead give might to nearby allies. If you use a Projectile Finisher your ranged weapon will do additional damage.

Gives a nice list of all of the combos.

For example if you use a ranged weapon to get a Projectile Finisher and shoot through a Water Field you will get a regen boon.

I hope that helps.

A nice combo for engineer with the healing turret for example is:
place the turret, instantly overload it and after that destroy it. The overload creates a combofield water and the explosion triggers the combofield because it is a combofinisher: explosion.

Combos aren’t really intended to be single-player ‘tricks’ they are really for group play.

A typical example is the very commonly used swiftness buff you’ll encounter in WvW.

Your commander will call a halt so that everyone can group up then call out ‘static field’. The elementalists in the party will then lay down an AoE static field that you see as a shimmering ring. The commander calls ‘blast it’ and all the guardians and warriors will then do a hammer blow, which is a blast finisher.

That combination of static field and blast finisher grants up to a couple of minutes of 33% increased run speed to everyone in the party.

Similarly, in the middle of a fight, someone will call out ‘water field’ and lay down same on the commander. Everyone with a blast finisher hits that and everyone within range gets a huge heal.

Knowing your combos takes group play to the next level.

Just try noting which skills you have that are finishers, when you see a field, blast it. For dungeons, fire fields are very common. Here is a vid where we made good use of fire fields for high dps throughout the run.

Thank you. I always witnessed this in WvW and never knew what it meant, now I do !
