Combos
I find combos to be an amazingly fun part of combat. Knowing what combos provide what effects are part of what make a great player.
The wiki pages have a very well done list of combo fields and finishers and what effects they provide, and they even cross-reference it to show what profession skills can do them.
When you hover over an ability on your skill bar, the tooltip (information window) will say if something creates a combo field or finisher, and what type it is.
In general, a combo field will be an area of effect on the ground, visible by the player. Think of this as the first half of a combo. A combo finisher is an ability that reacts with that field in a certain way. For instance, a projectile finisher passing through a fire field will cause burning to it’s victim. An explosive placed inside the fire field will give might to your allies in the area.
You can use your own fields and finishers, and players can interact with fields that other players place, whether they are grouped or not.
I hate to send you elsewhere for answers, but the wiki pages have all the information that I don’t have time to type right now. Maybe I’ll work up a thread for them sometime.
Hi Amos, I’m reading the wiki this moment, thx for the tip.

No problem. I had a great time reading and learning about those. The first thing you’ll want to do is get familiar with the effects you can produce on your own, with only your own fields and finishers. These will always be at your disposal. For instance, using my own skills, I can put down a fire field, place explosives in it, and give nearby allies several stacks of might. I don’t know what profession you are (I’m an engineer), but I’ve found Elementalist to be a profession with a LOT of options for combos.
I haven’t been able to play much lately, but I’m really excited to start learning more about all professions’ fields and finishers to be more effective in group combat.

Read the wiki, but here is the simplicity of it. Combo’s consist of two parts
Combo Fields are AOE/Line cast abilities. They create a ground field.
Combo Finisher is an ability(stated in an attack) that does cool stuff depending on the field they are standing in.
It’s cool and all the benefits apply some depth. Though honestly I thought Combo’s were more like a chained series of attacks. Similar to what you would find in a fighting game. Personally it’s just one of those Anet aspects where they are misusing the language. I think the term Synergy Ability would be a better term.
@Amos – I’m an engineer aswell, we don’t have as many combo skills as the elementalist but I’ve already found some interesting ones.
@jayderyu – I think combo is short for combination and considering you have to combine at least two skills… well, you get what I mean.
